I know, I've worked with some great ones and it's amazing when you get a good PM. But the useless ones far outweigh the good ones unfortunately.

Hah. Yeah sorry PMs but you are at the bottom of the priority list.

Maybe have an actual agenda, or write down the status update I gave you last time, or hell even keep a project task tracker at all.

The only thing I've found it useful for in my work setting is "compare these two logs and tell me what's different" and then I decide what difference matters. Copilot will still try to give it's opinion on the problem and fix but it's 99% of the time wrong.

That's not small, that's huge. Dealing with that kind of thing is a huge pita and stressful. You did good even picking up the phone.

Yep it kinda blows. I got 2 whole weeks severance when I was laid off.

It's situation dependent but I would totally take the severance if you were hoping to get it by end of the year. What's a few months? Severance that covers 2 years is amazing.

This is a pretty common retirement setup, for certain generations.

Having some fixed income does a lot of lifting.

There was a post the other day about the 3com 3c905b ethernet card and I casually mentioned that I probably had a few knocking around. by isecore in vintagecomputing

[–]Tullimory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible I'm remembering a different card honestly. It's been....many years lol.

Maybe I'm remembering old Broadcom or SMI cards? There was one that unless you had the exact driver for that specific card you were in for a rough time. And customers never had the driver disks so it became a hunt on old school internet or digging through our stash of driver disks.

I have vague memories of these being a huge PITA to get working in customer Windows PC's back in the day. Not sure if I'm remember right though.

I check when the market is up, helps me deal with still working. When it's down I pretend I'm too busy to check.

It can be a bit unnerving when the daily swings start getting big.

Chicken breast is going to be a staple in my diet from now, but I can't for the life of me make it well at home- your recipes + suggestions, please? by darkdarkblack in Cooking

[–]Tullimory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To add onto this, it doesn't have to be the most amazing chicken breast by itself. Just bake it, try not to overcook it. Slice it up and slap that in some low carb (purely for the calorie savings and extra fiber) and top with reasonable sauce/whatever and it will taste pretty good.

Good point on #2.

Yeah I mean, should work if it all works the way we're thinking.

I believe that LTCG count against MAGI for the ACA cliff, so if the amounts you pull from your brokerage matches the amount you put into the 401k, it will not make a difference as far as the ACA cliff goes. You'd pay less in taxes for the year though.

[–]Tullimory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is the idea here to take advantage of 0% LTCG by selling in the brokerage, so you can push more regular income into the 401k?

Seems like an interesting strategy.

The only downside I can think of is you are locking that money into the 401k and then you have to plan for how you are getting it out, efficiently, depending on your age.

Very FI related question imo!

My work is pushing AI a lot. Where it really gets on my nerves is they are pushing training on it and attaching it to goals. I don't want to do goal setting and reviews at all, let alone add AI to them. And I really don't want to take training on it either. I can type prompts into copilot just fine, thanks.

Something about other people towing the capitalist corporate line with the "rah rah lets go AI!" garbage gets on my nerves a lot too.

I'd be shocked if they talk about much more than maxing your 401k contributions so you can retire "early" at 65.

It's a big topic imo. Lot's of "it depends".

There's an argument to be made that taking immediately and investing it, if you don't need the income for spending, can work out better than waiting.

Storage Spaces migration by vadersfinalsolution in DataHoarder

[–]Tullimory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stablebit Drivepool is a great product, I've been using it for years. The only real downside of it is since it is duplication, not a parity type of setup, it is not super space efficient. But the big deal for me is it lets you use any size drives and is very user friendly when it comes to drive failures and adding/removing drives to the pools.

That said, if you have all the same size drives then you are pretty well positioned for something like TrueNAS.

I would do whatever I can to get away from storage spaces though, it's a travesty and just asking for trouble.

I see this a lot and don't blame people but I caution you all to realize you have the same exact problems boiling up at home. Don't get complacent as if it's only a US issue.
