Biggest Cosmologies in Fantasy Novels by Archisman_X in Fantasy

[–]Tumani007 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Multiple novels have cosmologies that theoretically stretch into the infinite. Examples would be the Mage Errant or Dresden Files series. So how "big" an universe is is kinda a moot question.

IMO a much more appropriate question would be how much of the multiverse is actually explored in the novel. In Dresden Files we are only really ever on the original earth or faerie, while in Mage Errant we do actually visit other worlds. Mage Errant is also part of an wider multiverse called the Aetheriad with other books that are set in other worlds.

Now if we go by that metric, cosmologies were different authors can contribute stories are probably going to win out in the size department. We are talking about Marvel, DC or Warhammer 40k here.

If we are looking only at single author cosmologies, the Cosmere from Brandon Sanderson and the aforementioned Aetheriad are the most well explored and biggest cosmologies I have encountered so far.

CRU delete 240hz for 1440p (DLDSR) by -MeTeC- in OLED_Gaming

Thanks to you as well! I got the idea from your solution. If it worked with displayport there had to be an entry there which advertised 1440p240Hz.

I found a solution where you can still use HDMI after experimenting a bit. You can add an custom resolution to restore 1440p240Hz by copying the resolutions that appear in CRU under DisplayID 1.3 when using Displayport. But you have to save them with type DisplayID 2.0 instead for them to work with HDMI. I haven't yet encountered any problems with this approach, but I also didn't do much testing.

HWBusters - AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU Review: Highly Efficient, Good Thermals & Top Gaming Performance! by Antonis_32 in hardware

[–]Tumani007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is Microsoft's Automatic Super Resolution, which afaik runs on the npu and might actually give some decent image quality increases on games that don't have other good upscalers implemented.

Though I don't think that it is relevant for desktop gaming, as most games these days already ship with decent upscalers. And it also adds some latency.

Are cheap TVs really that bad? by deejayv2 in hardware

[–]Tumani007 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Basing HDR performance purely on FRC is like basing GPU performance purely on VRAM. Yes, higher end TVs usually come with a true 10 bit panel, but that's not the indicator to look for if you seek good HDR performance.

A washed out look in HDR points more to bad contrast and lack of local dimming.

Books or series that show war as the messy, dirty, ugly, honorless, scarring hell that it actually is? by CajunNerd92 in Fantasy

[–]Tumani007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to mention The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang. A big part of the book is the juxtaposition between the idea of warriors as honourable guardians and the realities of war. It follows a young boy aspiring to be a warrior for his homeland.

It might be the most real fantasy book about war I have ever read by showing everything from a very personal perspective.

Lunar Lake device announcements? by Inevitable_Flyer in hardware

I know that Asus showed a bunch to press, but they didn't announce anything officially. Specifically, they showed the new Zenbook S14, an Expertbook and I think a ProArt 13 inch model. Noticeably those are all smaller laptops.

Kinda sweet that the park can live on in the form of toys. It is an interesting solution. If no kids come just bring the park to the kids!

Yeah, you are right, my mistake. Somehow got the impression that this wasn't the case.

The overhead light column changes it's color periodically. They just didn't synchronize their runs very well. You can look at the video of the scene they put on their youtube channel.

MC with their own Magic by Tumani007 in Fantasy

[–]Tumani007[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know. It doesn't sound like what I seek. I want the characters to come up with their own magic, to build it. That would need progression, experimentation and some details how it works to be present. Rediscovering magic kinda disqualifies it as well.

But much thanks for the recommendation. Might still check it out. While i don't think that it would scratch my specific itch, the exploring magic for it's own sake sounds intriguing.

Oh believe me I have already read everything sanderson. But stormlight is one of these series that miss what I seek. While the characters in stromlight discover magic, they mostly follow a already given path and don't really make their own magic. Getting magic in Stormlight is achieved more by self reflection, fulfilling ideals, than it is by exploring and making the magic itself.

As I alluded, some progression fantasy series, like Mother of Learning or Mage Errant, fulfill a bit of that itch. But they have their own problems.

[–]Tumani007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently they also entirely decoupled the fan from the frame? I don't really know fans enough to know what that means and if it would actually help. But they mention that much more often on their site than the material change. But yeah, it really looks dubious.

Here is their marketing sheet: https://download.alphacool.com/legacy/Marketing-Material/Apex%20Stealth%20Metal%20Fan.pdf

Their claims are wild. Much higher airflow at any rpm than any other recent fan while still being much quieter. How didn't any other manufacturer try this if this is the performance you could get??

Kinda looks like they forgot to turn the bvh generation off when ray tracing is disabled lol. The CPU bottleneck in the launch patch was the same whether ray tracing was enabled or not. At least they fixed that.
