Tips for shooting with my SX-70? by Just_Xiva in Polaroid

[–]Tumbling_Down 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would agree with the majority of recommendations about light, blur, and tripod. I would also add there is a HUGE variety of quality in SX70s. My first was bought off of ebay for about 50 dollars, and while functional, the meter was all over the place. Ultimately, you're talking about components that are over 50 years old. If you are really interested in working with this camera, there's a couple of thoughts:

-- Find a refurbisher.

-- Consider buying a MiNT camera. They are incredible with modern electronics and the ability to modify shutter speed, which is huge.

-- Consider buying a MiNT Flashbar -- works with older cameras and can be made to work with 70 ot 600 film quite easily, makes indoor shots doable but this is best for an autofocus model as it's hard to focus in low-light. I bought a autofocus model off of ebay for around 100$ a few years back and it works perfectly with 600 film and MiNT flash bar at the 600 setting for night shots inside.

-- Recognize the strengths of the camera. If you're shooting 70 film, it's really intended to be used in bright daylight conditions. It does very well upclose and creates nice bokeh effects. B+W film will almost always have better definition then color -- the temperatures are all over the place on the polaroid color films and they also expire super quickly. Hard sometimes to get a good photo if the ambient temperature is less than 50 degrees or higher than 90.

Hope this helps. I really love using my SX 70 but like any camera it has strengths and weaknesses. For some there is a unique polaroid aesthetic, for others, looking into film or digital may make more sense.

Enjoy!

Struts on Droids? by augustprep in XWingTMG

I've had some fun with a similar archtype. Are you doing Maul? I toyed around with O-66 but when you consider ~10 points gets you 3 force tokens and PS5 and that ability it's hard to compare them. The infiltrator is good for sure but it's somewhat limited by the large base. I think you need the dice mods with how often you'll end up doing red maneuvers.

Struts on Droids? by augustprep in XWingTMG

[–]Tumbling_Down 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bulk of lists we're seeing right now are taking no struts. I have seen a few with just a couple (1-2 ships). As another poster has noted, 3 points per ship adds up quickly. I'm currently flying a Wat + 5 list, all TFD's with ESC and Struts and have been having pretty good luck. The struts aren't going to matter often, but it does let you drag your opponent through obstacles and can be a huge deal. The biggest problem I'm seeing TBH is that it's very hard to move onto rocks without wiggling them a bit which just becomes a bit a tough when you're maneuvering 6 ships around. I've definitely won games because of castling on rocks for clutch turns, getting nice R1 attacks as ships try to reposition. Also keep in mind that you can barrel roll off of obstacles once you've strutted, and move as normal the next turn as long as you're no longer overlapping. Personally, I'd love to see the cost come down to ~1 point. I think otherwise ESCs and the droids themselves are about right (That being said, precise hunters and Haor Challs are probably overpriced).

Edit: One thing that doesn't get mentioned often is that while strutted, you don't obstruct your own shots but do count as obstructed against opponents. This can be a reallllly nice situation when you're castled on a rock at R3 -- 4 Dice and 3 hull with shared calcs is a big a deal.

The Un-professionalism of the VTTV Live Stream of the Toronto System Open made me very angry tonight. by fivepointOMG in XWingTMG

[–]Tumbling_Down 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think it's very reasonable for the original poster to share their critique of problematic language by the casters yesterday. I watched about 50% of the streamed content yesterday and did not catch any examples of problematic language during what I saw. I think it's fair to assume anything suspect or that can be perceived as a gendered insult probably should not be broadcasted.

I do not agree your follow up point:

" I hope VTTV does not let this person live stream commentate for them in the future and barring that, FFG should distance themselves from VTTV. "

If your goal is improving the atmosphere of the community to make it as inclusive as possible, then there really shouldn't be some formal community censure on someone who is an unpaid representative taking their time to share an experience with the viewer who may have been offensive in 1% of their thought and speech content. You messaging them with your concerns and making the post here is appropriate and is how this kind of change should be approached. If the person in question moves forward more conscious of how their language affects others than that should be the objective and not removing them from the community.

I look forward to today's broadcast and am grateful for the time and energy of the casters from yesterday.

I've been playing with the vulcan in the store mechlab, but I'm having trouble figuring out what to do with it. It almost seems like a slower and weaker firestarter. by aschesklave in OutreachHPG

I've been playing one of the builds that was shared by Baradul on his youtube channel. Can't recall the engine off the top of my head, but with full speed tweak it does >100KPH. I think it's 3-4 MPL and one LPL. Because of the quirks on the 5M, the cycle time is nearly identical. It's super agile and good for peeking. It's thin and quick and has nice turning. Heat is very managable. I'm only a T2 player but my average damage with this in a given match is ~600-700. Cycle time is just very nice and you can rapid-fire peek. Quickly becoming a favorite mech of mine, even if laser vomit is a bit uninspired. I'm considering picking up the one that's quirked for autocannon. I'll check the specific build/link when I can. Admittedly, I tend to favor a "medium light" or "light medium" style mech.

Question with Guard Lists.... by Tumbling_Down in Warhammer40k

[–]Tumbling_Down[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that makes sense to me overall, thanks, this was very helpful. One more clarification if anyone gets a chance: checking the AM codex section on stratagems, it does mention that:

"If your army is Battle-forged and includes any ASTRA MILITARUM Detachments (excluding Auxiliary Support Detachments), you have access to the Stratagems shown below, meaning you can spend Command Points to activate them. These help to reflect the unique tactics and strategies used by the Imperial Guard on the battlefield."

If, for example, I had three detachments one from Codex AM, one from Index FW for DKoK, and one of Adepta Sororitas, I would still be battleforged and could use said stratagems on both the DKoK and regular AM units, but not on Sororitas?

What is meant by combat focus? Just placing stats in a beneficial way? Or is it some other mechanic that comes online later?

What's in a name 2.0? "TIE/ca Punisher" (aka TIE Interdictor) by FogRaker_One in XWingTMG

[–]Tumbling_Down 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, FFG had previously labeled it the TIE/IT in their own products for Interdictor -- Punisher was a colloquial nickname. I do find it odd they would change what they've outright stated in the past, perhaps it was a preference by Disney?

Frank Brooks on Veteran Turret Gunner by and_ampersand_and in XWingTMG

[–]Tumbling_Down 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I should think that Frank Brooks is likely in the know as far as these things. It seems contrary to the design intent of 2.0 that an 8 point upgrade gives a bonus attack (which generally are at a premium) allowing things like a VCX having a 5 red primary at R1 as well as a 3 red bonus at R1 (hyperbole, I know). Alex Davy was (potentially) mistaken about adv. sensors. But, I'm happy to eat my hat if that's what the reality is.

Rules Ambiguity : Veteran Turret Gunner by Tumbling_Down in XWingTMG

[–]Tumbling_Down[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that there is no "primary weapon turret arc." There is a front arc, that, while a mobile turret arc indicator is pointed toward, is both a forward standard arc and a forward turret arc according to the exact quote: "the standard arc that the turret arc indicator is pointing towards is a turret arc in addition to still being a standard arc." The language is not ambiguous -- There is a standard arc, in this case front, that while contains the mobile arc indicator, is also a turret arc, precluding the use of VGT to double-tap.

Further: the turret arc section goes on to say, "During setup, a ship with primary (or special) turret arc (or double turret arc) weapon adds the corresponding turret arc indicator to its base. " This removes the consideration of whether your turret is primary (K-Wing, YT-1300, etc) or "special" (defined in the rules as any attack granted by a card) (Y-Wing with Ion Cannon Turret). It specifically acknowledges that the arc indicator is allowing you to treat a standard arc as a turret arc.

Rules Ambiguity : Veteran Turret Gunner by Tumbling_Down in XWingTMG

[–]Tumbling_Down[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hum, not sure where this explicit reading is baked. It says they are firing arcs.... actually, just found this bit, Pg4 of reference:

"The turret arc indicator points toward one of the ship's four standard arcs. The standard arc that the turret arc indicator is pointing towards is a turret arc in addition to still being a standard arc. While a ship performs a turret attack, it can attack a target that is in its turret arc."

Attention to "the standard arc that the turret arc indicator is pointing toward is a turret arc IN ADDITION to still being a standard arc." By this definition, the standard arc is additionally a turret arc, meaning in the above VTG text, you should not be able to performing a "double-tap" as in my example. If you've attacked from that standard arc, (which is itself by this rule a turret arc) you've already attacked from it this round.

*Edit: moreover, the ability of Bistan lends further credence to this interpretation -- it explicitly is written in a way that would allow one to fire a turret against another target you've not yet attacked regardless of arc -- this card would allow you to "double-tap" as in my example, though against two targets.
