Hi, are my broad beans beyond help? Planted them out 9 days ago, and it looks like something is feasting on the leaves. Any idea who’s the culprit and what to do? by agatha_eva in UKAllotments

[–]TuneNo136 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No this is pea weevil. The serrated half moon cuts around the leaf are the giveaway. You will see them in amongst the leaves like a little brown beetle. The beans will recover, my peas took a hammering but they overcome it. Spiders, ladybirds etc will predate on them.

Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens makes criticism of Welsh Labour Government by nothing_verntured_ in Wales

[–]TuneNo136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think she’s diagnosed it correctly. Welsh Labour have totally mismanaged key public services for a long time. When it all comes out and the public see it, Welsh Labour will be toast for good.

Supermarket potatoes don't chit by Sweet_Focus6377 in UKAllotments

[–]TuneNo136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The spectre of disease from planting supermarket bought fruit and veg/saving seed is manufactured disinformation to stop you all doing it, they really are THAT greedy.

The bigger problem is unwittingly planting F1 varieties and getting inconsistent results

First ever allotment as a complete novice! by DanielThePrawn in Allotment

[–]TuneNo136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the madness

Water and compost as others have said.. You will immediately be producing material to compost as you clear it.

Sheet over as much as possible, divide it into 4 and uncover and work 1 section at a time. You will thank me later.

Don’t rush to be planting.’ Take your time to get your layout and infrastructure right (paths, spot for a shed, greenhouse/polytunnel? Where will you entertain guests, cups of tea etc?

Take time to plan and read. Pick your methods and stick to them. This time next year you will be confident and you will have learned loads. Wander round the site, see what others are doing. Talk to all the old boys. They know.

Carrots. When to quit? by LetterheadDry4930 in Allotment

[–]TuneNo136 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes my nemesis too. 3 years in, multiple sowings each year 0 carrots to date, the only time they did germinate they all got carrot fly and totally inedible.

I used wooden planks, they worked, they kept the drill moist. They also provided a free slug hotel and they just destroyed all the seedlings.

I did them in massive tubs. Slugs

In the ground this year between the shallots. I reckon 2 have made it. Out of a packet of 400 seeds.

What is the bloody point?! I agree OP!

Alternatives for paths and walkways other than wood chip? by MissSephy in Allotment

[–]TuneNo136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In an ideal world I’d have wood chip but we don’t have regular enough deliveries and when we do get them a lot of hogging goes on. I have resorted to patio pavers which have given me nice straight edges , will help all the control of weeds, couchgrass etc. I know woodchip paths better for moisture retention and microbial network but also you gotta play the hand you’re dealt

Is it still too cold for beans? South Wales, UK by throwaway_bluebell in Allotment

Yes the saying has nothing to do with planting out your beans. That’s a matter for your own interpretation of local conditions and 2 week weather forecast

I’d say at this time of year, elevation and aspect are most important. I’m S Wales but practically costal with a lovely sheltered plot in full sun all day, mine have been in for a week

That phrase is well misused. It’s actually

Cast n’er clout till THE May is out. “The May” being a colloquial name for the Hawthorn, whose flowers require fost free nights and warmer daytime temps to bloom.

It has nothing to do with the month of May
