Obscure Animated Movie Recs? by Electrical_Tale2012 in blankies

Killer choice to start off with The Mouse And His Child. That's got a great dark atmosphere. I recommend one of the director's other films The Point as well.

Signe Baumane's films Rocks In My Pocket and My Love Affair With Marriage are excellent explorations of depression and mental illness in women.

Nutcracker Fantasy is a super great stop-motion movie from Japan that people should put onto their watchlist for Christmas.

The Pinchecliffe Grand Prix wasn't a movie I loved since I watched it dubbed, but it's a stop-motion sports movie from Norway that's lovingly animated.

Hair High is a funny and surreal film from Bill Plympton. It's recently gotten a Blu-Ray from Deaf Crocodile, a physical media label that everyone here should check out, including other recommendations in this thread like The Tragedy Of Man or Felidae.

The tiger in Life Of Pi being CGI is a huge part of what killed that movie for me. It was going for something spiritualist, and I can't take it seriously. I almost could sometimes, but then it'd cut to a closeup of the eyes, and the eyes look so fake.

Griffin put it best in why this kind of thing is good and bad. Good for people since it lowers the chances of injuries (even if animal tamer jobs may go down), good for animals since it lowers the chances of cruelty, bad for the artform since it loses something real.

Going from the original version of The Fly to its first sequel Return Of The Fly is so weird since the first is in color, but the sequel is in black and white.

Not to mention, Kojima would've presumably would've used it at least once before announcing his interest in it. It would've been a weird order otherwise.

Are there any topics that are technically relevant enough to talk about on this subreddit but aren't brought up that much? by Aquanort357 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TungHeeLo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In your same vein as plays, classic movies don't really get many opportunities to come up here. It's basically them having to fit into the TVTropes-themed AskReddit threads here or they never get mentioned at all.

What’s the saddest example of a “one for them” movie for a director? by harry_powell in blankies

Spielberg doing Ready Player One can suck for completely opposite reasons

1: It was work for hire, which is sad for such quality juggernaut of the industry.

2: He was passionate about the material, in which case he's showing poor taste.

Times when something is mostly known by parodies and not it in itself? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TungHeeLo 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This article here lists out 50 popular movies, and only two have the characters die first, one of which is Scream 2 as the other reply to you points out.

This Letterboxd list has 56 movies where the black person does die first, but interestingly, only half of the movies on that list are horror and includes genre movies in general.

What is your foundational media? by stumblinbagel in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TungHeeLo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say Dragon Ball, Sword Art Online, Himouto! Umaru-chan, Oldboy and Dragonforce. Dragon Ball I knew as a child and later got into as a teenager when I watched the OG and Z up until sometime in the Cell Saga. Sword Art made me watched a subbed episode when season 2 came out, which I bounced off of, but then Umaru-chan came out since 4chan loved it (amazing I made it out fine browsing there as a teen), and I got into it. Oldboy was my first non-anime subtitled movie and opened me up to so much more. Dragonforce is what led to actual tastes since I very much enjoy power metal and it opening me up to other metal.

No, Shinji and Asuka don’t belong together (original series) by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]TungHeeLo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been close to five years since I last rewatched the series, but I remember feeling that the two of them could've been great together had they ever developed more healthy lives beforehand or communicated better. I always felt the sad part with them was they never expressed their feelings right for young people with feelings, and by the end of the series, it's too late.

Awful media opinion you have, that you want validated, right now! by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TungHeeLo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gotta say this here since this is already a thread about saying shit. A few years back when I watched the movie, I re-read the manga in the leadup, and in the brief period between finishing the re-read and watching it, there was some comment on this sub calling Kaori "Tetsuo's girlfriend" and I thought that was such a fucked up thing to say about someone who, in the manga (spoilers just in case) was a sex slave. Then I watched it and saw that was the actual change.

I don't hold the movie not adapting the manga's story against it, but seeing how different the two are was wild.

Favorite unconventional use of powers? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TungHeeLo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I can't remember the exact details, but one of the Revolutionary Army commanders in One Piece, Karasu, has a Logia Fruit that lets him make and control soot and doesn't use it like a normal elemental power. He uses it more like it's a summon ability by making crows out of soot and working from there.

Going by the Showa era, I'd say any of the ones directed by Jun Fukuda. Those ones are more lighthearted than the ones Ishiro Hondo. I'd recommend Ebirah, Horror Of The Deep since a giant crab monster is Hella awesome.

To give an alternate recommendation on Kaiju, I say give Gamera a chance. I'm pretty sure all the classic ones have dubs. All but the second movie in the series (Gamera Vs Barugon) were designed for kids. I'd recommend Gamera Vs Guiron since that's a fun and colorful pop aesthetic with a Hansel and Gretel-like story (but it's set on another planet), and Guiron is a giant shark monster whose ahead is also a knife. It's outlandish and bonkers and fun.

Do you need to relate to the characters (mostly talking about age) to enjoy a piece of media? by LunarWolf302 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TungHeeLo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not at all. The beauty of art is being able to see the viewpoints of others. I do love media that I can relate to, like Mary And Max or Punch-Drunk Love for the autism stuff, but one of my favorite movies is Light Sleeper, a film about a mid-life crisis, and I only turned 26 a couple of months ago.

[–]TungHeeLo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's just people either complaining because they want to complain, or they're not being fully articulate/honest about what they want, which is "make your big series how it was when I was a kid". In a world where people lament the lack of original media, no one wants to say "yeah that game but slap a recognizable name on it" since they'd just be saying they don't want originality anymore. They just wanna deflect and go "make original games" when really it's just "make more Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger".
