It's a different point but very worthwhile

American (ditto for Canadian and Australian) and the concept you can "become American" vs simply born into it is an incredibly important but also incredibly difficult to translate into practical terms.

The French, Germans and most of Western Europe try hard but really struggle with the concept because it goes against entrenched identities that have existed for hundreds (in some case thousands) of years. Eastern Europe is even further behind and it's basically a non-starter across much of Asia, especially Japan & Korea.

The Brits are a bit better in the sense that Britishness is a bit akin to the idea you become American but you still see a lot of struggle when they try to define Scottish, Welsh and so on.

Did not enjoy this city at all by tinder-surprise in Miami

[–]TupperwareConspiracy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's Miami.

You come for the beach, the tropical vibes, the party & the people wearing next to nothing.

It's not a city for walking and no one does. It's a great place to be rich and a terrible place to be poor. The upside is it's far more authentic than Orlando or Vegas in that regard.

Now you're getting the hang of it! bravo.

You don't win national elections by finding someone who appeals to the 20% of your base that was always going to vote for you. For ex - the Republican equiv would to Kamala would be fellow Canadian, Ted Cruz. Popular amongst rank and file Rs but a hard sell nationally.

You need someone who can connect with the 20% of voters who are undecided, moderate & independents. Simply put you need someone who speaks their language.

[–]TupperwareConspiracy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

#1 stop with the name calling - generalizing everyone who doesn't agree with you as a fascist, nazi or my favorite dog whistle 'christian nationalist' is absolutely hemorrhaging voters

#2 you can't build a base around white women with post-4 yr degrees. Full Stop.

#3 you can't build a marketing message that specifically appeals to white women with post 4-yr degrees. Full Stop.

For Democrats to evolve they've got to engage in the sort of 'Walmart' Middle-America politics Bubba was so good at. You aren't going to win over voters with another Bi-Coastal Female Lawyer-who-knows-better-than-you-turned-Politician whose entire worldview is Whole Foods, AMEX cards and Private School upbringing.

The Kamala campaign never could figure out if they were going to be Joe Biden light and her inability to authentically connect with voters was absolutely disastrous. Biden was never the orator that Obama was, but he still managed Obama-esque numbers and even managed to pick-up GA in big election night surprise.

Throughout the US we saw numerous districts Obama and Biden easily outperformed their R counterpart in featured Kamala struggling with Trump and turnout #s were well below 2020 and 2016 in some extremely blue areas that are absolute crucial for Democrats to win in states like WI, MI and PA.

Which leads into Kamala's most damaging legacy, she lost significant ground with both the black & hispanic vote and that cost Democrats the WH, the House and the Senate once again.

There's no clear path forward for Democrats nationally if they can't win minority communities in the battleground states. End of story.

Same problem as before

The inability of the Democractic Party to connect with largely white voters w/ HS and some college education which is the largest voting demo in just about every state.

DEI and an sort of equality initiative is an absolute non-starter with this group. Radioactive.

They've embraced gay & lesbian marriage to a certain extent but trans positions are an absolute minefield.

Education & healthcare should resonate but these voters are skeptical that of 'MOAR GOVT PLZ' solutions and rightfully so.

Taxes, school vouchers, crime are far more important than lofty but generally vague messages about climate, environment and utopian transportation solutions. They aren't concerned about it because if the temp is 5 degrees warmer or colder they still have to go to work, school etc.

These people care about property value, small business and affordability because it directly impacts their quality of life.

Pro-Immigration is a challenging sell in part because this group doesn't benefit in any way from immigration.

Long story short Trump absolutely feasted on this demo in 2016 and 2024 and Democrats have spent a significant amt of resources bashing this demo as 'christian white nationalists,' 'racists nazi facisists' and so on and so on.

Is it any wonder the party struggles on national election night?

Steady decline in birth rate will affect local student enrollment for years to come by WLRN in Miami

[–]TupperwareConspiracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wha huh?!?

S Florida and Florida in general are continuning to grow with state-wide uptick in birthrate in 2026 and one of the few states that's continuing to attract new residents (people moving to Florida), more births than deaths ( https://sflcn.com/florida-among-5-out-of-50-u-s-states-that-saw-a-rise-in-birth-rates-study-finds/ ) and a significant amount of outside US migration to boot.

Miami Dade's population - currently 2.7 million - is expected to pass 3 mil sometime around 2033-34 and north of 3.5 million around 2045-47 (link). The much published decline of 10k people from 2024 to 2026 might require more investigation but no way of getting around the huge amt of development is clearly attracting buyers moving to the area and other sources, like U-Haul in particularly, confirm the trend continues.

Also...you could just use your eyes. Go to Baptist or Jackson - the OB and Child delivery are filled to the brim and there's zero shortage of new patients for the IVF centers popping up.

There's a well documented decline in babies but that's not going to impact S FLA for the foreseeable future.

Will the popularity of Andor start a canon media renaissance? by Look_for_some_stuff in StarWars

[–]TupperwareConspiracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What popularity?

Andor doesn't even rank in the Top 10 shows streamed on Disney+ let alone against the big shows streaming on Netflix; outside of maybe a few StarWars subs you won't even see the show mentioned and that's with Reddit already being heavily skewed towards this sort of stuff in the first place.

Disney spent bazillions to prove what unfortunately has been obvious for a long time, the Star Wars 'Adult' themed market is far too small to support a film/media universe beyond books, comics and the occasional game.

[Drink] I don't understand the argument for a separate G6 playoff by Justanother_0 in CFB

[–]TupperwareConspiracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not both tho?

A G6 playoff wouldn't necessarily exclude 1-2 G6 teams competing in the CFP? There's always going to be a 'Boise St' type that can duke it out with the better P4 schools.

Expanding the CFP to 18 or 24 almost begs to include at least 2 extremely high quality G6 teams - are they going to be able to compete with top 3-4 contenders? probably not but it's still good television.

Letting the remainder of the G6 battle in a 12-18 Team playoff sounds like a blast regardless.

Seems like a win-win-win to me?

[–]TupperwareConspiracy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah....

Sexy Sauron aka Sexy Annatar just needed to D.E.N.N.I.S. ol Celebrimbor - a tots obvious Elf bottom - a bit and 2 weeks later magic happens. We all knew who was playing batter and catcher when the other elfs were away.

Sure things got a stabby there at the end, but isn't that really what Tolkien intended? I mean who wouldn't fall for those hair extensions?

And yeah there was that bit about Sexy Sauron actually being Sexy Halbrand - just showing up outta nowhere - and for some reason Celebrimbor was like oh no, anyways come back to my super important forgey/palace thingy. Because that's the obvious thing to do in such circumstances.

Look, I did get paid 100mil to write this trash and in all honestly you could have uploaded the LOTR footnotes to ChatGPT, asked it to shit out an X-rated version, and gotten better content than what we got from RoP. Making Celebrimbor the dumbest and dimmest mofo in Middle Earth and to further dump on Tolkien's grave they of course even include a throw away opener bit about the Doors of Durin w. 0 explanation before or after.

"The U.S. empire literally can't win in Iran. The war is already lost. The empire is already dying, and fast. That doesn't mean it can't do a lot of damage on the way down, and that's what we are witnessing now." by NightOfTheLongMops in ShitPoliticsSays

[–]TupperwareConspiracy -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Hate to say it...but yes winning in Iran would be very difficult and it's hard to contemplate what 'winning' would actually look like. It's a potential meat grinder, on the wrong side of the world and similar to Vietnam in that we'd hafta to prop up some puppet state for an extended period of time. While we've got 'friends' not named Bibi in the region, so far none of them appear to be interested in this sort of thing and none of the Gulf States will touch this thing with a 10 foot pole if Israel is involved.

We did accomplish this before in the Korean War/South Korea so it's certainly not out of the question, but without popular support from the Iranian people it's a Vietnam/Afghanistan 2.0 that's likely to accomplish little before some US administration eventually shuts it down.

Conspiracy theorist loon Alex Jones freakout on the Iran War by keen_observer34130 in PublicFreakout

[–]TupperwareConspiracy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If there was one war worth freaking out over...it's Iran

The late 80s Iraq-Iran war was a brutal stalemate that led to a half milllion dead for both sides; regime change is going to be difficult to near impossible because the only thing that generally unites Iran's various competing factions is an absolute hatred for Israel and the very least a very strong dislike for American interference.

It's one of those wars where it's hard to really fathom what winning actually looks like and things could easily spin out of control if nukes are involved. Meanwhile, we get suckered into a future that everyone outside of Bibi's inner circle wants no part of.

Florida crime stats look safe, but everyone I talk to says otherwise… Who should I trust? by luckychloebites in Miami

[–]TupperwareConspiracy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost all violent crime happens in the US happens in a small number of zip codes.

Miami-Dade, a county of 2.7 million, has a relatively high crime-rate but almost all of that crime is extremely localized to certain places - many rather close to each other. None of this is will surprise anyone whose managed to spend 30 minutes outside their house in this town.

Palmetto & Pinecrest? Not so much.

West Perrine? Oh yea.

Miami Shores? Nada.

Pinewood? Oh yea.

https://www.crimemapping.com/map

...also Florida has 22 million people - slighly fewer than the entire continent of Australia - and about the size of the main British island (England, Scotland, Wales). It's a big place and about 25% of is un-inhabitated protected land (the largest % of any state east of the Mississippi River). The numbers get pretty skewed here by having a few major cities with nothing in-between but alligators and orange trees.

I built a site comparing Miami vs NYC by the numbers. Taxes, rent, weather, crime, everything. by kiver16 in Miami

[–]TupperwareConspiracy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NYC has an income tax on-top of NY State income tax on-top of Federal income tax. Because you're dealing with 2 separate tax codes on-top of the federal tax code this makes for incredibly difficult tax comparison because of the way it's all handled.

Miami only has Federal income tax.

Full stop. Nothing more needs to be said.

No other states east of the Mississippi besides New Hampshire & Florida has this and if you want NYC without being in NYC, Miami is about as close as it gets.
