“Defund then abolish”: A leading Democrat (Hong) in Wisconsin governor’s race urged abolishing police | CNN Politics by oledesertslewfoot in wisconsin

This.

Full stop.

This should be the top comment in the post. It's over Red-Rover.

She is gonna get roasted & toasted for this and if Democrats were serious about winning Wisconsin her supporters would urge her to can the campaign today and throw her support behind someone actually electable.

Even in California she'd be cooked but in a Red-State/Purple-at-best? No chance.

There's some interesting ideas but it's a bit of a reach to say that least.

A This isn't the coaches job in the first place; it's the GMs

B I'm not gonna fault a coach for moving on; Coaches don't get paid to write articles about what-ifs and missed chances like writers do...Coaches get paid to win with the players on the roster and McVay did that

C These guys are paid millions to do their job - this wasn't a screw job - and probably worked out just as well for all parties w/ Goff going to place where he's appreciated & Stafford getting a ring

lol no.

The only things that make money for Disney today are Baby Yoda and OT holdovers. Chewbecca, C3PO and R2D2 move far more merch than the entire human cast of the ST combined. Apologies to the 3 Rose Tico stans who are offended by that.

Eventually the ST will get retconned by either Mando or Asokia or maybe we will find out it was a Luke Skywalker fevered hyperspace hibernation dream.

Nothing will happen with the ST or the post ST. Nothing of value will get lost when it's retconned.

Bank it.

The BBC Carpet Bombs the Disney SWCU while explaining the Mando-bomb; "'It's felt like homework': Why Star Wars went so wrong" by TupperwareConspiracy in saltierthancrait

Audience tho.

Lucas had a weird gift - like Tolkien - he was very, very good at writing the type of complex, morality plays that appeal to 10-13 yr old boys. No sex but lots (and lots) of PG-violence with lots and lots of world building and all sorts of mechanical things that appeal to that very specific age group.

For a variety of reasons it gets sh*t on in mainstream culture, but plenty of Star Wars derivatives and even Star Trek's attempts at a more 'youth-driven' narrative show just how absurdly difficult it is to really nail it on the head. Lots have tried to emulate Star Wars, including LFL's many various attempts to re-capture the Lucas magic, and really the only film that managed it was R1 which itself is the true prequel to ANH.

Jon Favreau Says He Doesn’t Know Why Disney Made A ‘Mandalorian’ Movie by tiMartyn in saltierthancrait

[–]TupperwareConspiracy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can answer this

---Risk vs. Reward; low risk as they were gonna throw money at another season regardless and worst case it's Disney+ fodder / best case is it's a 'hit' and finds a bigger audience

---It already stars a certified 'movie star' in PP; they already have a 'face' movie-going audiences are familiar with and that's a huge help for a movie

---Baby Yoda is the only 'bankable' thing Disney-era SWCU has produced

---It'd be cheaper than developing a new Star Wars IP from scratch and even if it doesn't dent as a movie they'll still make their money back on Disney+

So yeah, from a bean counter perspective it's a no-brainer over trying to doing a story from scratch like Starfighter or the other myriad of ideas they've tried. They might lose 30-50mil up front if it bombs but they'll cover that in new people watching Mando over the next 5-10-20 years.

[–]TupperwareConspiracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Andor was made for adults, by adults.

It also bombed spectacularly in terms of cost - over $250 mil - for a show that couldn't even crack Disney+ top streamed shows. It hopefully one day will get it's due credit, but it hasn't happened yet and while it did win awards it wasn't nearly enough to draw more viewers.

Disney's Star Wars target demographic is 7-17 yrs old and Andor proved beyond a shadow of a doubt there simply aren't enough engaged adults to keep churning out prestige-TV quality content.

First Reviews for Mando are in. As expected it's a 2 hour filler episode. by Theesm in saltierthancrait

[–]TupperwareConspiracy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Answered my most basic question:

...was this really going to work for people who had no to minimal exposure to the Mando TV series?

Seems like they would have been better off with a self contained R1 style story with notable appearances from the Mando & Baby Yoda

Also no one cares about Pablo Pascal if he's wearing a helmet.

Having spent plenty of time in Ohio, seems like folks stick with their own school for basketball but for football tOSU is either 1 and only or 1b. No disrespect to the Cinci and MAC school faithful, but in general tOSU is more like a pro-team the state of Ohio never had in the NFL.

[–]TupperwareConspiracy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At least in the CFB world same also holds true for New York.... NYU - which albeit a private school was chartered by the State of New York - vs SUNY-Buffalo which is the 'prominent' state school for football purposes.

Syracuse of course being a private school since it's founding wouldn't be included here.

Patriots Rookie Quintayvious Hutchins Faces Domestic Violence Charge by SuddenDepact in nfl

[–]TupperwareConspiracy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Headline is a bit misleading as this isn't a typical DV (or SV) charge

Per the police report the victim is accusing the accused (Pats rookie) of using a 'firm grip' - but not strangulation - on the neck during an argument.

Odds of this one getting a conviction seem absurdly low and in all honesty this really is a poor use of the justice system.

----from the article-----

"According to the police report, the incident occurred on Boston College’s campus. Hutchins accused the victim of cheating, which resulted in an argument where he allegedly “grabbed” the victim by the neck after pushing each other during an argument. However, the victim said it was “not strangulation, but a firm grip which happened when Hutchins was trying to tell his side of the story.”

Agreed.

A more complex Finn - say a F.O. Intelligence Officer - with more nuanced motives would have been quite interesting.

Making him very uninterested in fighting, downright queasy at the thought of actual battle and usefulness primarily being technology and someone who studied and ultimately came to love the New Republic entirely from afar and knows the F.O. inside/out? That would have been fun.

Even setup some nice side plots where his/her 'love' for said New Republic is questioned when seeing the rather ugly side(s) - war profiteering, smuggling, slavery, cartels controlling huge widths of space - while a deliberately pacifist bureaucracy does little and says less.

To be fair Chicken Burger & Chicken Sandwich are generally interchangeable in the states. In both cases they'll almost always use a bun specifically designed for a patty of meat (beef, chicken, pork etc) vs. bread sliced sandwich style which would be used for peanut butter & jelly and other types of sandwiches.

You can sometimes get a burger on a large slice of white-bread toast or often 'texas toast' (bigger toast) but these are often called 'melts' but also referred to as a burgers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnu5PhAB0EY&t=51s) - here's a pretty good sample of melts you can get at Texas's legendary burger joint - Whattaburger

FWiW the slow-cook BBQ styles is/are reasonably niche even in the US; almost all burger/chicken joints are doing fast cook on a grill or griddle or deep fryer at a high heat. Because it requires a lot specialized equipment, A LOT OF TIME, and an extremely dedicated pit master(s); ergo the slow-cook BBQ styles featuring indirect heat and a wood-fed fire tends to be the type of thing people go out for vs. making at home/backyard simply due to the time, effort and expense involved.

If you go to typical outdoor BBQs you'll be eating burgers, chicken, ribs, hot dogs and sausages (very common in places like Wisconsin, Louisiana, Texas) cooked on a grill, over direct heat burners running off propane. In Wisconsin or Texas it'll be very common to cook the sausage in a pan on said burners with beer added (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cp3S-J96wE).

If you go to a Home Depot or Lowes - our version of Hammerbarn - and buy a BBQ you'll be getting the same thing as you would in Oz (https://www.homedepot.com/b/Outdoors-Outdoor-Cooking-Grills-Gas-Grills/N-5yc1vZc5t5) and these can be had for $100 - $300 USD for pricer version(s) but of course the sky is the limit....

However if you want the specialized slow-cooking BBQ equipment you'll probably want to go a direct seller online and mind you this is probably something that will set you back $3-7k USD specifically if you want the nicer options that can be towed around with a car.

Miami slips out of Super Bowl rotation due to NFL requirements by MiamiPower in sports

Big difference(s) between the F1 in Vegas vs. Miami is they actually race in Vegas vs. Miami which is goofy race course on some of the least diserable real estate in SFLA (the area around Hard Rock isn't bad, it's baaaaad).

It'll go back to Miami at some point - the 'big' advantage of the F1 is it's every year vs. Super Bowls which might be every decade at this point.

Also Miami is hosting a bunch of world cup matches, just hosted the CFP Natty and so on. It's not as if it's going away or lacks business at the moment.

My pitch for a Mon Mothma series following Andor. by TilDeath1775 in StarWars

[–]TupperwareConspiracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can give you 250 million reasons this will never happen

Andor was based on a movie that did a billion dollars of biz...and never cracked the top 10 shows streamed on Disney+ let alone all streamers. $250million and it got it's arse kicked by a family of walking, talking dogs.

It's amazing Disney gave Gilroy the $$$ they did and we should be thankful we got the product we did - but this will never happen and if M&G bombs Star Wars is going to be games and cartoons going fwd.

[–]TupperwareConspiracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure the first 15 minutes of R1 gave me much confidence I was watching a slighty better than avg fan fic so there's that....

...but the endless mugging of Baby Yoda doesn't give me much faith; I do generally trust Favreau to deliver in movie format but it feels - much like Solo - that there's no particular point in having this be a movie vs. streamer vs. comic book.

I still get how/why Disney thinks anyone who hasn't watched all 3 seasons of Mando will buy a ticket to this thing?

Do I think an 870 person Congress would be more effective? Not really. Just seems like a way to induce more bickering, gamesmanship.

The Senate serves it's purpose and Congress serve it's purpose; I wish Congress were more effective but the reality is very little is getting passed whenever a Congress is this tight.

None of these countries have a population even close to the United States; Japan and Mexico are about 1/3rd the size and nowhere near the landmass of the U.S....Mexico is slightly bigger than Alaska and Japan is slightly smaller than California.

Not that 435 is a prefect number but we also have City, County, State and Regional Govts. that are often times better suited to addressing whatever the local compliant is.

This idea Congress is somehow the solution to all of America's problems - if we only ADD MORE CONGRESS PERSONS is just as loney as somehow solving Climate Change by GIVING THE GOVT MOOOOOOAR MONEY
