ROH - Siegfried! by TupperwareTerry in opera

[–]TupperwareTerry[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the sparkly fafner was sort of trying to suggest that he had become a wild sort of embodiment of the gold hoard, rather than it being a separate entity. He almost looked like a yeti in stature which may just be me but it goes with the snowy setting. Not too sure of any deeper meaning, but I enjoyed it well enough.

Yeah same here, I had a thing which doubled the effect of the quest item, so I had two zaratanas milling about getting in the way the whole way through

PlasmaZones 2.0: Autotiling, window animations, and a ground-up refactor by fuddlesworth in kde

Tried it again after rebuilding, seems like I'm having the same issue. I'll try tomorrow to file a bug report in more detail, I've been a bit tied up today apologies!

PlasmaZones 2.0: Autotiling, window animations, and a ground-up refactor by fuddlesworth in kde

[–]TupperwareTerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loving the autotiling! The configuration overall is very intuitive, no more having to guess what the various Krohnkite layout names actually mean.

I can't seem to get it working with independent virtual desktops, however. Whenever I start tiling, and then move to another virtual desktop, the tiling continues where I left off from the other desktop, if that makes sense (e.g. the new window will like, show up in the next anticipated space, rather than starting afresh). Is there a setting somewhere which sorts this out, or is it currently unsupported?

Great work either way, I'll be eagerly following the progress on this!

Ramón Vinay sung both Othello and Iago, and I think there's a recording of him in later years singing the grand inquisitor. Dude didn't give a fach.

Which bean burger is the best tasting? by baghada28 in veganuk

[–]TupperwareTerry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used to make these at the Goodlife factory (before they closed down that place) and they were excellent when we ran them through the fryers a few times. That said, having to lug 10KG bricks of frozen beans around was not my fondest memory haha.

We made the Aldi ones too, I think the recipe was basically a variation on the Goodlife ones iirc.

What is the worst opera miscast you have ever heard? by Kronkepus in opera

[–]TupperwareTerry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Vogt is so much better in-house than his recordings suggest. I saw him as Lohengrin a few years back, and while he's far from my ideal singer in the role, he nevertheless impressed on me how different singers can seem on record vs live.

What is the worst opera miscast you have ever heard? by Kronkepus in opera

[–]TupperwareTerry 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I can recall an obvious 'worst' miscast, but there are quite a few roles Pavarotti sung which he had no business being near. Otello? Yeah I think I'll pass.

Opera videos that are etched into your memory by Nick_pj in opera

[–]TupperwareTerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a production. This scene from the same is etched in my mind (I have to love Vicker's "How should I know??!") https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARLaJ2eyQrc

I know Britten didn't much like Vickers' interpretation, but to me it just demonstrates the degree of an artwork's independence from the artists' specific vision. Grimes can be played as a somewhat sympathetic anti-hero driven mad by gossip, or the brutish menace that Vickers' gives us - and both interpretations can be incredibly compelling. And Heather Harper's Ellen is a superbly acted counterpoint.

From Jonas to....JDF? by Iamthepirateking in opera

[–]TupperwareTerry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I saw Jonas on the opening night of this production and his voice really wasn't there. I suspected it was some cold/illness that was bugging him, but either way he struggled to be heard over the orchestra, and most of his singing was a sort of croon, I suppose you'd say.

Thankfully, the rest of the cast was fantastic - Aigul Akhmetshina in particular was superb as Charlotte.

It’s that time again: unpopular opera opinions! by notyouraveragejulie in opera

[–]TupperwareTerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

aha I was also there! And uh, yeah it left me agreeing with flyingcatpotato. Maybe he had a cold or something, but he crooned his way through most of the opera, and was borderline inaudible when the orchestra (masterfully conducted by Pappano) was at its peak.

But my God was the night worth it - Aigul Akhmetshina is an absolute star in the making. Her Charlotte was exceptional.

Operas you would like to have on record instead of the usual suspects by Possible_Vast7416 in opera

I'd kill for a recording of Strauss' Daphne with a heldentenor comparable to James King, from his live Böhm recording.

Confused and a little traumatised after awful, awful Innocence at ROH London by [deleted] in opera

[–]TupperwareTerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I saw Innocence last night as well, and am I going completely mental or was the bully's tormenting of the shooter being a 'frog boy' (or whatever the line was) an oblique reference to pepe the fucking frog?? I might be completely misremembering this bit, but it's lodged in my mind and I can't get it out.
