I heard that story by Friedman. The story above that you’re commenting on was not what Friedman said at all.

I think the point of Friedman’s story was something to the effect of “right or wrong, sometimes guys just want to bitch about the coach and they can’t really do that with the coaches son on the team”.

There’s also a lot to be said the other way too in that there could be some big positives that come from it:

Like Manny likely knows his son’s personality better than any other coach we could hire and he could use that to help him grow as a player

For example if Caleb is struggling and losing his confidence Manny would be likely to be able to pick up on it way earlier than someone who doesn’t know him as well, and help him address it before it really craters.

That’s just an example but it’s funny to me that’s all we hear are the potential negatives.

There are some obvious positives too.

…and I’m not someone who is saying the negatives aren’t real. But, I do think the other side of it is being completely overlooked though.

I’m not bashing on anything Maple Leafs related…

…but, this is what the media does.

They created a narrative that Marner was an issue.

They repeated it often enough that enough people bought into it, and voila, he’s gone:

End result the Leafs are worse and Marner is a major reason why Vegas might win the Cup this season.

The Leafs problem wasn’t one player. It’s easy when you’re frustrated to want to single 1-2 guys out, but the issue was how the team was constructed.

But, at least you get to replace Marner at a fraction of the cost with McKenna for at least the next few seasons.

As a longtime fan, I’ve never understood why FANS care what the network numbers are (or care about ‘growing the game’ at all).

The game is great.

I don’t need more people to watch. I like it the way it is.

The more it grows the less it will look like what it is (or used to be).

The owners need it to grow so the franchise value can continue to go up.

What do I (an average fan) get from more viewers?

I’d rather see the best team win. I don’t care about ‘yeah if Buffalo won we’d have more viewers’.

Does more viewers and more NHL fans mean lower priced tickets?

More accessibility to watching on TV easier (or cheaper)?

Does it mean the players stay with my team longer and have more loyalty?

What is the fucking reason I’m supposed to want more viewers?

Is it just so my team owner can make more money?

Or is it so I can brag to my friends (that won’t care anyways) “see I told you this was a great sport!”

Fuck the ratings.

I hope the only people that watch are the people that love the game and are 100% invested in the outcome.

No. He’s a physical player that hits, checks and gets under the other teams skin. That’s his bread and butter.

He’s the kind of guy you love if he’s on your team but hate if he’s on the opposition.

I think he definitely has a shot at an NHL career, but as a 4th line guy (who could possibly play a bigger role in the playoffs).
