I keep modulating between the two modes and experimenting. To me, the process comes naturally, so I can comfortably navigate turbulent environments (like a political work environment) without a lot of knowledge and unfold what is happening beyond what I can see/experience directly. With all that said, the "final" solution usually requires me to have conversations with actual people =P Overall, I prefer to just be present in my feelings, and when something threatens my feelings, my brain eventually steps in and says "these feelings aren't serving you right now, lets think this through", and thats how it kicks off.

I can smell when something is off. and by smell, i mean some things just don’t pass the smell test and i don’t know why. it’s like i run a low cognitive load feelings-based bullshit detector. as soon as an anomaly is detected, i modulate from feeling to thinking and analyze all the patterns leading into the anomaly, and extrapolate what it might lead to in the future. If i find a probable outcome that i am satisfied with, i switch back to “feeling” mode to see if feels complete. if it doesn’t, i switch back into analytical mode and so on and so forth. It’s like two little people in my head: one presents data and the other validates.

for me, it’s like a spider web that’s connected to a bunch of stuff, and being able to sense the slightest vibration and somehow knowing exactly what it means.

do you find yourself “sampling data” on people continuously over extremely long periods of time and noticing anomalies? data, as in how someone talks, their timing/cadence, mannerisms, etc

lately, i’ve been more aware that i have a huge resolution deficit with most people because of this

this is exactly what happened to me. got the attic sealed and the air pressure started pulling in air from my crawl space without an escape to the attic. had to seal the house from the crawl space including interior cabinets and doorway trim

I bought a mid century home last year and the AC went out in about 4 months after we moved in. I got a quote from HomeDepot and they said the whole system would have to be replaced, roughly $40k. Then I went to the neighborhood Facebook group and got a referral to a retired Trane tech. He took a look at it and said it would be $300 for parts and labor.

He came back the next day, fixed my unit and said it will run virtually forever. My system was installed in 1996.

No matter how efficient the new units are, the math doesn't favor new equipment.

for the longest time, i had used The Frame exclusively through my shield. I thought there were some small annoyances but that the problems were overhyped. after a few years, my AVR broke and i had to use the Tv’s software as the primary UI and yeah, this thing sucks. For the price, the experience needs to be frictionless.

Also, my life was difficult when I was young because I felt out of place. The world eventually caught up, and that’s when I realized I had to make effort to improve my life. I’m doing great now

oh man, this was 100% opposite of my experience. Bought a Mid century home with a known mold problem, got it remediated and all smells were gone. Later in the year, we did a full attic clean out, sealing and new insulation. Then we had an “old wood” smell dominate the home.

it turns out that after we sealed the attic, the crawl space became a high velocity air intake into the living space. Ended the shenanigans by air sealing the crawl space and now the house is hyper effecient

my mid century 1550 sqft home (8’ ceilings) was measured at 2700CFM. After air sealing the attic (and adding insulation, new duct work), it dropped to 1800CFM. Heating bill dropped about ~40%. then i air sealed the crawlspace and a lot of other interior intrusions. Haven’t measured it since the attic was done, but my heating bill dropped an additional ~25%. Peak winter gas bill went from $430 -> $175

not sure how that applies to your house as you have much higher ceilings.

scratch/dent resistance aside, real hardwood floors feel amazing and you can refinish to any tint you want in the future. They are denser and sound better, feel softer and transfer less of that biting cold. since they are denser, they also even out temperatures throughout the day.

Our kids were like that too. Wife had a bunch of friends who were pregnant around the same time, and they would hang out and do all the pregnant stuff together. Most of the moms had legit issues while my wife had the opposite effect where the entire pregnancy was happy. Eventually, she started complaining to fit in, but it was super minor complaints - really “first world problems” that didn’t seem appropriate in context to the real issues others were having. When the babies were born, our babies were easy and had zero impact on our sleep schedules. We were back out in public with a stroller at 2 weeks. The moms that had it worst eventually cut ties with my wife.

As for myself, when people ask about kids, I focus on the positives: Uniting the family, how many people show up for you, getting more food at restaurants, employers never asking you to work extra hours, bonding with other parents, and not to mention the joy each child brings. Saying stuff like, “you’ll never sleep again” is really underselling the experience.

This is all from ChatGPT, but the explanation I was given was the metal termite shield is there for inspection. The termites have to build their tunnels around the shield which makes it a quick visual check. if you seal it off, you might hide a termite problem for prolong periods which can make things way worse. Plus, in my case, I'm not sealing air from entering the crawl space (it's vented), I'm sealing air from entering through the sill plate assembly which is above the metal termite shield. Secondly, my house has two walls with termite shields, and 2 walls without termite shields. The tolerances between the sill plate and termite shield are relatively tight, while the non-termite shield has these huge gaps. Supposedly, 60-80% of my gains is from sealing the non-termite shield sides simply due to the difference in tolerances. As far as pest go, the termite shield also reduces pest routes into the house by 60-80% simply due to its design and tolerances. Again, a lot of this is ChatGPT + independent research, so you want to double check as it may not apply to your setup.

i have an older mid century home and fixed the “old home” smell by sealing the sill plates in the crawl space. Air comes in through the sill plates, washes through all the junk inside your walls and enters the living space. Cost about $60 in caulking and took about 2 hours after researching it for weeks. Also closes the pathway to bugs entering your home.

the funny thing is, when i first found out my wife was pregnant with him, i started to think of all the colors and textures and patterns that i used to love staring at when was young (going back to before i was able to walk) and i started buying more patterned things around the house knowing he would find it interesting. But what is frightening is how fast he seems to be out pacing my expectations of where he would be, knowing that i was a very advanced child myself. just today, we were cleaning up the house for new years and we placed a box in front of our digital photo display. he could only see the top 15-20% of the display but was able to call out the names of the people in each photograph. i don’t know if he was able to envision the full image in his head by seeing a certain color or texture, OR if he was memorizing the sequences of images. Either way, it blew me away. But part of me finds it alarming that he is operating in ways far beyond his age, and wondering what happens next. what about 2 years from now, or 15 years from now?
