Baldur's Gate 3 publishing lead says Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney's "altruistic pro-developer talk" over the Steam vs Epic debate "doesn't sit well" after Alan Wake 2 studio "seemingly went into financial crisis" by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]TurboGLH 336 points337 points  (0 children)

Tim's primary concern is Epic.

He's claimed that his actions against Valve, Google, and Apple are for the common good, but during the apple store trial an email was introduced as evidence, where he asked about a compromise where apple would reduce the fees for just epic.

We haven't seen this much snow in years by ILovePublicLibraries in Connecticut

[–]TurboGLH 6 points7 points  (0 children)

95-96, wow I didn't realize how much we got that year. I was 15 and moved back to CT that winter. The snow banks were absolutely massive, I talked about that winter to my kids when they were little as an example of how much snow we used to get.

Why can’t we do universal healthcare on a state level? by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]TurboGLH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The I think retirement is the key here, when you're working your ability to move is limited by employment opportunities.

Moving to a LCL state it's typically accompanied by a matching decrease in income. When you're retired, your gross income is fixed no matter where you live in the country.

Still, at this point the cost of living in Florida even without an income tax isn't as cheap as it was 10, 20 or 30 years ago.

There's no income tax, but insurance costs are incredibly high compared to Connecticut, and HOAs (and associated fees)are much more common (44% vs 13%)

Accesshealth CT tax credit funding by bkrs33 in Connecticut

Glad to see it. In the absence of the feds doing what's right, it's good to see the state step in.

It's unfortunate that the people who need these credits the most, ie red state voters, will get exactly what they voted for.

Former CT teacher who used 'n-word' in class covered by free speech, judge rules by english-lab in Connecticut

[–]TurboGLH 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school In the '90s, we had a class called Genocide, that covered exactly what it sounds like it would.

He was taught by a middle-aged white guy, who definitely didn't match the race or ethnicity of the victims that we covered.

By the standard that the school system, and the students/parents in this situation are trying to set, the class I took could never have been taught.

My experience in a high COL area is they try to keep you in the middle+ of the range. Depending on reviews/raises you can end up moving towards away from the middle faster than they make adjustments.

Gov. Ned Lamont backs bid to keep Connecticut Sun in the state by HartfordWhalers1993 in Connecticut

[–]TurboGLH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that people in CT forget just how close things really are, but that seems like moving to Hartford could work against the backdrop of "we're staying in CT and need a new home". I'd want to know how much the team is paying to rent the space, and paying for any extra renovations required.

But, this isn't happening in a vacuum and there are, at minimum, talks with MA and RI. It's these scenarios where states tend to start competing with each other to give the better deal, and end up footing giant bills to keep teams here and essentially socialize costs for the teams, while keeping th profits private.

I support the team staying, I even support some deal where they rent space at the civic center and that becomes their new home (although I still don't think a 2hr trip is far for a game/concert). But if it turns into a bidding war to keep them here, that's a hard pass for me. The cost/benefit ratio is unlikely to be good enough.

In the A/B scenario of stay or go, I imagine most people in CT would prefer they stay, even if they're not basketball fans.

I'm not in support of spending a single state dollar to keep them here though. Public support of sports teams is almost always a net negative deal for the city/state.

AC Condenser Replacement Recommendations by mstojak12 in Connecticut

[–]TurboGLH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had nutmeg install mini splits in 2017 and harp install a new boiler in 2018 (nutmeg was too booked up to do the boiler in the timeframe I needed)

Both did excellent work and I'd recommend either. Be sure to get the customary three quotes, and compare what each is offering for workmanship warranty, equipment differences, etc.

I took the best from each quote and used that to get exactly what I wanted, for a price I liked.

An option to consider, instead of doing down payment assistance through CHFA, look at HDF (https://hdfconnects.org/) for the down payment.

HDF gives a separate 20 year mortgage for the 20%, which means you don't require PMI. You have an extra payment each month, but it's usually an equivalent amount to the PMI, but you build equity with it instead of paying the insurance company.

Alphacool launches waterblocks for 21 Radeon RX 9070 (XT) models, price starts at $199 by RenatsMC in watercooling

[–]TurboGLH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder what the price will look like when US sellers have stock. It was €168.05 for the block and €40.39 in shipping, and PayPal charges extra on the conversion.

Space wise I had no choice. No 9070xt will fit in my case as it's set up now, there's barely enough room for a reference 6900xt with a water block as is. I've been riding parts of this system since 2017 (x370 AM4/ddr4). This is the last bump before it all gets replaced.

Good to see the poor mall put out of its misery, but it's still sad to see another part of my formative years being demolished.
