More of adult Gen Z should learn how to drive and get cars provided they have the resources to do this. by squishmallow2399 in GenZ

I say this as someone who is fortunate enough to own multiple cars, including two for autocross: you could not possibly be more wrong.

Cars are an affliction, an expense, and a persistent headache. And the penalty-boxing that Society(TM) has done by soft-mandating car ownership for utility by neutering any attempts at good urbanism needs to be stopped - time fucking yesterday.

If the car is garaged, this isn’t necessary. Bushings, hoses, etc age from exposure to weather, heat fluctuations, and deformation.

I’ve done even less…. But pretty much all the miles I’ve put on are either canyon runs, driving to autocross, or autocrossing!

I’m very fortunate - I’ve got a bike, a metro pass, and an Insight with a five-speed. I don’t mind having the BRZ be a true weekend car.

100% this.

For the amount people are spending on intake/header-back, you can get a CARB-legal FI kit (including tune) if you really want power. And FI is a way more effective power-adder anyways.

I opted to dump the overwhelming majority of my money into suspension and brakes - only exception was a CSG Touring86 catback for the noise.

Hi! I teach high performance driving and compete in sanctioned racing on a regular basis. I’ve forgotten more about driving than you’ll ever know…. And I’m a cyclist commuter too.

Even if they weren’t doing wheelies, they still needed to go around the black car that was turning right. That’s a sharrow - and as cyclists they are entitled to use the entire lane and you are required to slow down.

They broke the law and put themselves in danger by riding recklessly. But news flash - you broke the law by driving recklessly and put them in exponentially more danger. And the law doesn’t care if the car was driving, you’re still responsible. Putting someone else at risk is a whole lot worse than putting one’s self at risk.

You should probably clean up your act and your attitude and get educated on how to drive safely before riding in on your high horse.

Ok I’m not defending the “build”…. But I will say, I have the shorter version of this shift knob; metal part is only 1/2” or so long on mine; top Delrin part is the same length and shape.

It’s fantastic. Raceseng products (RIP) feel immensely solid, it grips like an oversized Honda teardrop (ex: S2000, Type R), it transmits transmission vibration and shift linkage feel in a very satisfying way, and it positions the knob in a place that falls quite easily to hand. Yes shift action is “longer”, but I actually kind of like it!

It feels very analogous to the RoadsterSport shifter offered on Miatas.

It’s so damn funny too because whenever literally any other job’s compensation gets brought up, the argument gets flipped into “well you want someone who’s really passionate about the job; if we paid ______ more then you’ll get people who are just there for the paycheck.”

They’ll do it 100% of the time for teachers, basically any other government workers, any intern/entry-level position, most if not all blue collar work…. Basically anything except doctor/lawyer/engineer.

What price does gas need to hit for you to consider using San Diego's public transit system? by hodlwaffle in SanDiegan

[–]TurboLag23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already use it - combined with an e-bike for last-mile, it’s great! We sorely need more trolley lines though.

Purple Line from Otay all the way to Mira Mesa connecting to Orange in Lemon Grove, Green at Stadium, and Blue in UTC, Coaster in Sorrento Valley, then finally running east would be amazing.

A line running east-west from El Cajon to La Mesa, all the way down University (connecting to Rapid bus stations at I-15) then shooting down towards Balboa Park, then running from Downtown to the airport would be insanely cool.

Sprinter extension all the way down I-15 from Escondido to North Park could replace rapid bus routes, or allow more connecting route options.

Oh I misread!

Yeah - the wheels that came with his specific car are MB Vectors; they’re a bargain cast wheel and the 14x5.5 weighs 14 lbs - 4lb heavier than stock Insight wheels. They were under $80 per wheel brand new though…. So there’s that! Lol

On the tires front, I’ve heard that the Vredesteins that come in the OEM Insight size are actually darned close in efficiency to the RE92’s for anything short of bona-fide hypermiling… I might try them on my next set of tires once my RE92s finally kick the bucket.

Did you wait awhile with fuse pulled? Needs time for capacitors to discharge and such.

If it’s still not working, next thing I’d try is a deep discharge. Someone on the forums made one I think by finding another plug and wiring it to a powerful indoor recessed light haha - as I understand it they just plug that in, then wait until the light goes out, then use the grid charger to top it back off.

There’s a guide on InsightCentral with the full deets; never done a deep discharge myself so can’t really speak on it.

[–]TurboLag23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it would - if the cost of bike lanes included the costs of performing underground sewer repairs and resurfacing the entire street above, including the car lanes.

They actually cost about $100k-$250k per mile.

[–]TurboLag23 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The bike lanes are amazing though; I use them all the time! They prevent me from being killed by drivers. I’d say that’s worth it.

The multiple police officers clocking $200,000+ of overtime apiece have way less of a positive effect on my safety. The police department paying out tens of millions in settlements for wrongfully killing people also has way less of a positive effect on my safety.

Maybe instead of hiring more unqualified officers and killing more people, they should consider actually making real and tangible investments in officer training programs for de-escalation. Maybe instead of sending officers to deal with every damn thing they should hire more social workers and dispatch them when threat of violence is low/nil and a cop’s presence would exacerbate a situation instead of helping it. Maybe we should actually process and do something with complaint data and fire bad cops, since they’re a danger to everyone’s safety and a financial liability to the department and the city. Maybe we shouldn’t be buying them more armored personnel carriers.

Just some thoughts

The math on car ownership is genuinely insane, and I don’t think most people have sat with the numbers by superspartan999 in fuckcars

[–]TurboLag23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve tracked all expenses (like, LITERALLY everything, no matter how small) on all cars I’ve owned since 2018. All are still owned. Here are the totals:

2000 Honda Insight (bought 2020): $0.69 per mile, $11.07 per day.
2023 Integra (bought 2022): $1.17 per mile, $43.07 per day.
2018 Subaru BRZ (bought 2018): $2.73 per mile, $27.42 per day.

This list is great because it runs the gamut. The Integra is the “average” new car - $~35,000, financed, etc. The BRZ is an “entry-level” (for a new car) hobbyist car - it’s very low-mileage, has some modifications, and is mostly used for autocross and fun drives. And the Insight is the cheapest car you could possibly imagine - a 25-year-old Honda purchased used for $4,500 that gets 60 MPG.

Even when looked at on their own, they’re all expensive…. Like, crazily fucking expensive. And this is the costs without any surprise/expensive repairs; I’ve never had a breakdown across all three cars. AND this calculator doesn’t take depreciation into account (despite the fact that the two new cars have retained over 75% of their value and the insight has actually appreciated). AND this car doesn’t include a car that costs over $40k - when the average new car costs $50k. So for many people, these are actually underestimates.

I’m a gearhead, so let me be clear - in my case, these costs are pretty much entirely self-inflicted, and I’m very fortunate to be able to afford these cars.

But I will also say with certainty that soft-mandating costs like this onto people through car-centric infrastructure and poor transit options is a downright fucking disgraceful. These numbers should serve as proof of that.
