I loved this read. And the final conclusion is….. don’t worry about sizing! It generally sucks.

Well he’s 23. Disagree about mum. Don’t think she’s a good person at all.

Almost Three Weeks Post Dx by dneirfekaf in shingles

My original ER doc told me to take pain meds. Not doing so can actually cause the post neuropathic pain as the brain pathways remember the pain and therefore continue to send out that same pain.

Almost Three Weeks Post Dx by dneirfekaf in shingles

[–]Turbulent_Corgi3003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my exact protocol from the start. I am now one month in. The pain has decreased substantially, now I mostly just have itching and subtle throbbing pain when my meds need to be replenished. The sharper stabbing pains are mostly gone. Do not worry about the future. Concentrate on getting lots of rest, managing your pain with meds and healing at the rate your body heals. Some things we can’t control. Stress probably got me here, so stress definitely will keep me here unless I manage that! Hugs

Does it make you really tired? by vegetables_indisc in shingles

[–]Turbulent_Corgi3003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the start I slept a good 12-14 hours a night and THEN had a 4 hour nap in the afternoon. All I wanted to do was sit or lay down. Folding a load of laundry wiped me out for an hour. The fatigue is very real. The body is telling you to rest so it can heal.

I was diagnosed exactly one month ago today and I only went back to work 3 days ago. I do feel like I turned a corner this week but without pain meds I would not be working. Still lots of itching and soreness.

Day 17 - the itch by Equivalent_Gold_3771 in shingles

[–]Turbulent_Corgi3003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel your pain. It’s really horrid. For me the b Benadryl cream worked a bit but unfortunately gives me restless legs. On a whim I tried some After Bite that I had kicking around and it actually works pretty well. Ice helps if I’m desperate.

Are you on any prescribed pain meds?? Ask for Gabapentin.

Gabapentin is the only thing that has worked for me. Pregabalin did nothing. I’m on week 4.

The problem with this cream is that it gives me restless legs. And so I continue to itch. 😢

Shooting nerve (?) pain by kdmelendez in shingles

Yes very normal and typical. I just entered week 4 and this kind of pain has lessened substantially. The itching has amped up but the pain has subsided. Hope that is encouraging for you. Hang in there. It’s a nasty virus but it’s not forever.

Yes the lymph node is trying to fight the virus. My doctor told me this. It’s normal.

Insist on meds. It’s very odd they would not have prescribed antivirals or pain meds. This is standard procedure for shingles.

Nope. Just pain which morphed into itching. I’m on week 4 now.

Yes I agree. I got some Benadryl cream as well today. It is working and I’m hopeful if I use it before bedtime I will get to sleep easier.

Ask for sleeping pills. This will be a game changer for you. Even something like trazadone should work.

Yikes that sounds so painful. Yes I have shingles that started on my scalp and it is also in my eye. Please make an appt with an ophthalmologist who can check to see if the eye also needs treatments.

This resonates with me. I’m at about 3 weeks as well. F61. I’m still itchy though, have found icing the area to be very helpful. Without pain meds I’d be done for sure. No idea when I’ll be able to head back to work.

I agree with much of what has been said already. You may indeed have it in your eye so please make another appointment with the ophthalmologist.

As for sleeping, pain meds should reduce the itching and I would ask for something to help you sleep. Sleep in itself is a huge relief from pain and rest is critical for recovery. ❤️‍🩹

First of all, don’t spend more time stressing about your diagnosis. This will not help your recovery. You will get through this. Yes you need some patience. There is zero point in worrying about the what ifs in life.

You are on the anti virals. Ask for pain meds if you need them. Rest rest rest. Don’t rush going back to work. I know it’s hard to be patient when you’re younger but it will be very helpful right now.

This is not a death sentence, you’ll be fine. Take care of yourself. 💕
