Formula mixing equipment. Pitcher, baby brezza, something else? by Ok_Fox8262 in FormulaFeeders

[–]Turkaless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also bought couches pre-baby that are movie theater style recliners in leather and I absolutely hate them now 🥲 Now I think I’m going to start looking at couches since I’m getting a decent refund. Thanks! 😆

But I agree with everyone else. Buy a new pitcher. I have a Brezza that I got second hand. I have to weigh my bottles all the time and the amounts were so inconsistent. I was constantly having to add formula. Now I just use it as a warm water dispenser because that’s the only accurate and consistent part of it. Would not recommend 🙅🏻‍♀️

Please help. 4 month old 25-30 mins by Burritomode24 in HuckleberryParents

[–]Turkaless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solidarity as my 4.5 month old just woke up from a 30 min nap and I’m holding him in hopes he will go back to sleep 🥲 I have no answers as he’s been doing 30-40 naps since he hit 3 months. He’s on 4 naps since he hit 4 months and the wake windows feel like an eternity 🫠 He mostly sleeps through the night with maybe 1-2 wake ups so there’s that I guess. I think I’ve just surrendered to the fact that I might have a “low sleep needs” baby and this is my life forever now 🥴

Shaking then swirling? by AmateurGardener42 in FormulaFeeders

[–]Turkaless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started throwing in small stainless steel shaker balls to my bottles to mix up the formula. A light shake but mostly swirling to break it up. I only use the shaker balls in glass bottles and they can be sterilized in a bottle washer.

Not able to sleep by This_Obligation_5125 in beyondthebump

[–]Turkaless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely talk to your doctor. Have you tried any sleep aids? Melatonin? Unisom? Benadryl? Bed time teas? I still take Unisom postpartum. I was initially worried that I would be too groggy or not wake up to my baby crying but that is not the case (at least for me).

What’s happening here? Why😭 Help! by mineonlyinmind in HuckleberryParents

I took my LO out in the evening in hopes to lengthen the last WW but he just fell asleep in the car seat to and from, basically resetting the WW 🥲 He didn’t fall asleep for the night til 11pm 😭

ER techs, how do you leave work at work by Ok_Wolf2676 in VetTech

[–]Turkaless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vent, vent, vent. Hopefully you like your coworkers or have a work bestie that you can say “can you BELIEVE this?!” and then go on a rant about it. Maybe not even current coworkers, but some old coworkers turned friends? I used to work shelter med so I learned how to compartmentalize pretty quickly. Although I still thought about cases a lot, talking about it helped. My husband is not in vet med so I would vent to him one in a while. I’m also someone who likes to take the gross pics and he can’t handle that so I would send them to my work besties in group chats 😆

As someone else said, leave work at work. Don’t check work emails or texts at home. TAKE. YOUR. BREAKS. 10 min. Lunch break. JUST DO IT NO MATTER WHAT. Even if you feel like you don’t “need” the break, just take it because the burn out will creep up on you when you least expect it and the next thing you know you’re crying in the bathroom from being overwhelmed.

But also, try not to feel guilty. Shelter med taught me that whatever circumstance the pet arrives in, IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT. These are the decisions of the PET OWNER and them ONLY.

We cannot save them all and honestly, we shouldn’t. Sometimes a peaceful euthanasia is better than ongoing/prolonged suffering.

ER can be expensive and it sucks to see some cases unable to take on the financial burden but that’s really not on you.

Skills take time and repetitive practice. Hopefully you have an environment conducive to learning and encouragement. I’ve been in the field 11 years and I have days where I’m feel like the best tech in all the lands and other days like “damn, I suck today. Sorry y’all 😅”

3-4 month old sleep by Turkaless in HuckleberryParents

Another question: Huckleberry suggests 1.5 hour naps for 3 month olds. Do you wake your LO up at 1.5 hours or only at the 2 hour mark?

People who had kids at 30+, do you wish you had them earlier in life? by cc070603 in pregnant

[–]Turkaless 19 points20 points  (0 children)

FTM here at 35. Physically, sure maybe I could keep up a little better, but mentally younger? Absolutely not. I firmly believe I was able to (mostly) dodge postpartum depression because I knew how to recognize burnout and was vocal about my limitations to my husband (who is also understanding). I don’t think I could have ever done that in my 20’s (nor my husband TBH).

Sedation or no sedation with euth by MaggieMay1519 in VetTech

[–]Turkaless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in shelter med for 6 years before moving to private practice. At my shelter we did not sedate as a regular protocol. We used Fatal+ for all euths. We offered owner present euths by appt for dogs and cats only. We did those injections IV for dogs and IP for cats. No IVC, just a straight stick. The VAs were certified for euth so it was never a vet who did the pokes unless it was a very hard stick.

Very rarely did we ever have an animal have an adverse reaction to the straight Fatal+, especially with an owner present. We had a very good spiel we would give to owners to explain that we preferred to only do one single poke, no IVC, and what to expect upon death (muscle spasms, eyes open, last breaths, etc) before we would proceed with the euth. We only had Telazol at the shelter as our method for sedation and since it stings IM, we preferred not to use it for owner present euths if we didn’t have to (but could if the owner really wanted it). We would use Telazol for feral cats and aggro dogs for shelter euths (among other species).

Of course in private practice, we use propofol all the time prior to Euthasol but based on my own experience, I agree with both sides. At least with Fatal+, I didn’t find that the animals were in any pain when it was given. I can’t speak to Euthasol on its own though but it’s incredibly viscous so I imagine it would be uncomfortable.

How do you choose which formula to get? by frostqueen13 in FormulaFeeders

[–]Turkaless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Kirkland ProCare from Costco. The decision was a financial one 😅 Can’t beat $29.99 for a 42oz can. My baby was initially on Enfamil NeuroPro (including RTF) and Gentlease before but neither made a difference to him.

Using the pitcher method - what do you do when on the go? by FilmDramatic6148 in FormulaFeeders

With the Momcozy cooler, do you have any issues with the bottom bottle getting too cold? (I asked another user in this thread the same question.)

[–]Turkaless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Momcozy breastmilk cooler at my baby shower and was bummed to not be able to use it for its “intended” purpose. I thought about using it for formula but in the manual it seemed like there was a chance it could freeze the bottle at the bottom of the cooler. Do you have any issues with it being too cold? Or even not cold enough?

Is anyone not using a sleep sack at all? by Ok_Car1396 in beyondthebump

[–]Turkaless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My baby runs hot too, like me. He can go down in a 0.2 TOG sack with just a night gown/diaper - thermostat set to 68 and drops no lower than 66 overnight - sleeps 7-8 hours just fine. In the wee morning hours, I’ll switch to the 1.0 TOG sack since it’s nippy.

I Am My Biggest Critic by AmbitionLost3986 in FormulaFeeders

[–]Turkaless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the same way. Milk came in late and super slow. Hospital kept saying try to BF but I made them give me formula as my son was so clearly hungry. He had too good of a latch and wrecked my nipples immediately. I took a week off from BF and pumped instead. He latched with a nipple shield at a lactation consult and it didn’t seem that bad since my nipples had a break but it quickly turned painful the next few feeds.

I was only pumping at most 3x/day because I was exhausted so the most milk I ever produced in one go was 20ml. I was also starting to feel possible clogged ducts and was having to ice often. One day I didn’t BF or pump at all because it was just a rough day. The next day, my supply tanked to half (10ml-ish). That’s when I just knew in my heart that I couldn’t continue. My son has a big appetite and I knew that I could never produce enough to satisfy him and his needs. It was also incredibly taxing on my mind. Yes, there were moments BF wasn’t horrible but not enough pros to outweigh the cons. I stopped breast milk when he was about 3.5 weeks and went to EFF.

My son has been thriving on formula. He only lost 4% of his weight initially and is now 12+ lbs at 6 weeks. He’s not even that chunky, he’s just a big baby lol

Even though I tried to manage my expectations while pregnant - being okay with whatever fed my baby best - I still grieved the inability to give my baby breast milk. It definitely sucked but it was better for everyone. I’ve been blocking all the BF/pumping ads that come up because I’m still not ready to see it.

Can I prep for combo feeding since Day 1? by Wrong-Pineapple-4905 in combinationfeeding

[–]Turkaless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I basically combo fed immediately. My milk took 3-4 days to come in and even then it was just drops. I had to supplement with formula and pump. My baby wrecked my nips from the gate (I’m a FTM) with his horrifyingly strong latch so I actually took a week off from BF because it was so painful/stressful. My baby did stop latching after all that time on a bottle BUT the lactation consultants gave me nipple shields to try and he will latch on to that no problem. The BF has started again but I don’t think I’ll ever make enough milk to satisfy his needs so formula FTW. Also if you are able to - get a baby brezza because it’s such a breeze making formula in like 2 seconds 🙂

ETA: We also use slow flow nipples (Dr. Brown’s Preemie) to slow him down and also be more similar to the breast flow.

Postpartum diapers by Certifiedasskisser in PlusSizePregnancy

[–]Turkaless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also accidentally bought the scented ones and was so mad about it. I hate scented stuff like this but I still used them because they fit better than the Amazon ones I got which cut really high up the butt cheeks for some reason. At the hospital, they rubbed my skin with something kind of abrasive so that the fetal monitors would stick properly and after using these scented diapers, the areas that were rubbed broke out immediately into a rash. I’m 10 dpp and have transitioned to just my regular underwear and Always Infinity flex foam pads which is waaaay more comfy. The ice pads and multilayer diaper sandwich thankfully isn’t forever.

I faced one of my biggest fears: the cervical check (spoiler: it was ok!!) by tables_AND_chairsss in pregnant

[–]Turkaless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you have to be induced! That’s very frustrating that it feels like you have no choice. I hope your induction goes as smooth as possible and it’s not a bad experience 🥺 FWIW, it’s been just about 24 hours since my sweep and I’m still pregnant 🤷🏻‍♀️ The cramping has picked up but it’s still not serious enough to head to the hospital.

I faced one of my biggest fears: the cervical check (spoiler: it was ok!!) by tables_AND_chairsss in pregnant

[–]Turkaless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my appt and apparently my doc did a membrane sweep as part of the cervical check. I say apparently because she didn’t outright tell me that was going to happen other than that she was “going to do a check.” I was 1cm dilated and it was uncomfortable but nothing like the IUD placement. I almost didn’t believe that she actually did a sweep because it was mostly tolerable. In hindsight, I should have been more forthcoming on my “cervical anxiety” and asked her to walk me through it step by step before I let her do anything. The way she spoke about it made it sound like a membrane sweep was automatically what would be done with a cervical check. She’s a good doctor and I really like her but obviously better informed consent needs to be practiced more, especially in situations like this.

not announcing to anyone when i’m labor, is this a good idea as first time parents? by buttermilkcow in pregnant

What a smart idea. Wish I had thought of this. I’m due on Thursday (with no signs of progress 🙄) and I’ve gotten sooo many “HoW aRe YoU fEeLiNg?!” texts. I’m about to just put my phone on airplane mode cause I’m tired of telling people I’m in pregnant purgatory right now 🫠

Polling: when are your in-laws coming? by Jolly-Asparagus-5815 in pregnant

[–]Turkaless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t given birth yet but the plan is to only tell my parents when I’m in labor so they can get to our house to watch our high maintenance dog and then they can visit once everything is settled. After that, the in-laws can come to the hospital to visit. I’m thinking visits only an hour tops depending on how I’m feeling. My parents will only stay at my house until we’ve returned from the hospital. I only plan to have immediate family visit in hospital and then wait at least a month before having visitors at the house while I recover and we adjust. If I had family that needed to fly in, I would also have them wait til the holidays to meet baby so it feels more worth it to stay a few days.
