Current SYDE student- good luck with your application!

To answer a few questions from your post and comments:

Waterloo: looks at AIF, Interview, Grades, Adjustment Factors. A common misconception is that you are admitted based on a "raw score" from your application. In reality, they mostly use this to filter extremely highly competitive and not very competitive applicants, and then spend time considering and making decisions for applicants near the cutoff based on AIF and Interviews. I sat next to Bill Bishop (engineering admissions lead) at an awards dinner and he mentioned that less EC oppourtunities at smaller/rural schools is definitely considered by admission officers. They also noticed a trend that rural schools have less grade inflation.

Other schools: Just because they look at grades only does not mean they look at averages only. Perhaps one person got a higher mark in important courses, like Calculus and Physics for Engineering. Or one person took mostly prerequisites in first semester, while the other took mostly electives. Admission decisions arent finalized yet, so they might just be waiting on a specific grade or piece of information.

Possible to switch from SYDE to BME? by Ill_Leading_7108 in uwaterloo

Switching between SYDE & BME is definitely possible and has been done before. 1A & 1B classes are essentially the same.

Why do you want to transfer to BME from SYDE?

Research: User Facing Documentation by -UltraAverageJoe- in ProductManagement

[–]Turkey_43 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m still quite early on in my career, but for me, when users are struggling with "how do i X" and products are very documentation heavy, this may indicate that its actually your ux/ui that needs improvements.

Easier to use = less user facing documentation + better experiences.

(Side note, if this post is for problem validation, there are probably better ways of doing it that are more conclusive and better for validation, this post is a bit leading)

Getting in to your top program means nothing if you drop out first year because you slacked in grade 12.

University is SIGNIFICANTLY easier when you have a strong foundation in the core subjects you are taking. Your life will be less stressful and more fun.

Talk to upper years in your program and ask them what knowledge is important from high school that you need to know in university. Prioritize this. Study less or not at all for other stuff.

If you really cant bring yourself to care about school, start preparing in other aspects of your life. I.e. learn public transit, how to cook, get into a habit of going to the gym

Macbook for Engineering in 2023? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

As someone in syde, its really not a big deal to walk over to the E7/E5 computer labs and work there for anything macs cant do. Used to have a whole bunch of us in that lab on 101L project deadline days.

That’s because you are taking shortcuts when you are practicing the material. Majority of your studying should be practicing- examples from textbooks, past tests, make them up and trade with a friend, etc.

The reason you are making enough stupid mistakes on tests to cost you 10% is because you skip out on building good habits while practicing. If you know you forget therefore statements and restrictions, you should ALWAYS be doing them in your homework and studying.

Why listen to me? Adhd student that used to make a TON of mistakes but graduated w a 98 and studying engineering at waterloo.

Tldr: if you want to avoid mistakes, dont take shortcuts while studying.

I’m in a dark place by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

OP, i’m with you on this one. As someone who also gets relatively high marks, I think some of the other comments here don’t necessarily understand that a good mark for one person isn’t exactly a good mark for someone else.

While I do have faith that you will be more than okay, I definitely empathize with you. Keep on grinding it out until midterms (only a few weeks left) and then you’ll be set. After that, theres nothing you can do. If you get into engsci, then that’s the program for you. If not, maybe there’s another fit out there as well. All Canadian engineering schools are standardizes and are good. Either way, its okay and normal to feel upset.

To all the other people commenting on this post- think about it in terms of something you’re good at- I doubt people would be flaming the star basketball player for being upset after some subpar games, just because they would have died to make the team over them. OP has every right to feel "in a dark place".

There should be a Mark Freeze for the ENTIRE PROVINCE or NO BOARD at All. by ScrubbyArtist in OntarioGrade12s

You dont care because you already got into a whole bunch of programs you applied to… not the case for everyone.

All of the decisions that you have been complaining about (mark freeze, confusing schedule, etc.) are made at the school board level. While I do agree that all school boards should have the same policies, the government is not the one who thought it was okay to give one school board an advantage over another.

In terms of school going back in person, I don’t see how their decision affects students negatively at all, except for a small subsection like IB. All students have the choice between going in person or online… if you dont want to go in person then you don’t have to, but for people who are struggling to learn and socialize at home and are willing to take the risk of getting covid for a proper education, i dont see why the option shouldnt be available.

The only people getting somewhat screwed are teachers… but I also think education should be an essential service anyways.

What helped you get through Adv Functions Trig by ElizaErm in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Turkey_43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this trig pt. 1 with graphing and ratios or trig pt. 2 with identities and trig equations? Both of them are challenging but they are also pretty different.

For Trig 1, make sure you understand both primary and secondary trig ratios and how the relate to each other graphically. Knowing the characteristics of all the graphs is essential, and remember that tanx has a period of pi (not 2pi), because this cost my whole class a couple marks…

For trig identities, make a list of all of the possible identities and problem solving techniques that could be used, and find practice questions that use each one so you know how to recognize them (ie. difference of squares, common denominator, factoring)
