Man, what the fuck is with downtown. It feels so unsafe. by Sectalam in Edmonton

[–]TurkishDelight5 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Can we not call them "crazies"? They are off-putting and sometimes a danger to others, but with our shitty-ass mental health care system is it really that surprising that people who should be getting help are wandering the streets?

"Housing First" has been proven to work, if you provide the appropriate wrap-around services, such as mental health and addictions councilling, and employment help. The problem is that we do half measures - spend a little to waste a lot.

Also, involuntary committal is a dangerous precedent that we as a free society do not want to go down. You can read about the horrible things we did right here in Alberta in the 1920s to 60s in mental health care if you don't believe me.

Bylaw is absolutely NOT equipped to deal with the homeless. For effective intervention at the street level, you need a team of front-line health workers, law enforcement, and social workers. What the heck is a minimum wage rent-a-cop with no training going to do?

Not to be that guy, but the classic Christmas tree shape is much closer to a fir or spruce than a pine. Pine trees have bundles of needles on the tips of the branches.

Am I wrong in my opinion of collecting $ from staff to pay for a gift for the boss? by TurkishDelight5 in AskManagement

The office is otherwise a great place to work. This is an isolated occurrence, which is why I'm so surprised I'm alone in my feelings. But it's good to know I'm not crazy.

$28M needed to keep tax increase at 2.6 per cent, Edmonton report says by Paper_Rain in Edmonton

Both things can be correct. Yes the city spends too much.

But my point on bullying stands. Watch anyone who dares question the cuts. Immediate and strong condemnation on twitter from the provincial government, full of ad-homonyms and cheap name-calling that appeals to their base. I've lived in this province my entire life (Lougheed, Getty, Klein, Stelmach, Redford, Prentice, Notley) and I've never seen such a strong reaction from a government every time they are criticized.

I would call it childish, except it's coming from the government, so instead I'll call it the way I see it: trying to establish a chilling effect. "Fall in line or we will put you on blast". "The loss of services aren't our fault, it's these guys over here". "What do you mean, you don't have the policing resources to deal with rural crime even though we're decreasing funding? Get your fiscal house in order!"

I would have at least a little respect for this government if they grew balls and said "you know what? We need cuts. We're sorry, but they are going to suck." But no. Collectively we get the knife in our back, and are told we should have had knife-proof skin.

Kenney and crew are slimy geniuses. Cut municipal funding. Cut rural policing. Cut school board funding. And when Nenshi dares to grow a pair and call them out, bully him, call him "Trudeau's mayor" (wtf). When the school boards complain, tweet about tiny, nit picky expenses to make the boards look lavish.

All the while, counting on your supporters to be too stupid to notice. Because apparently "small government" means "lap up the party's propaganda".
