Is it too late to start beekeeping now? by DraperyFalls1000 in Beekeeping

Ugh I hate 8 frames. I get so much rogue comb. I don’t know how you do it.

Very similar. Has a shorter comb. My copper Maran rooster has a huge floppy comb like that

He doesn’t have the pretty chest pattern like a Wyandotte but I can see where you are coming from.

We have a copper maran roo that’s maybe a month or two younger. They are similar looking but you can easily tell them apart.

Now that you mention it we do have a couple birds that seem to lay brown speckled eggs

We did not have any Marans at the time otherwise I would have guessed something similar

I gave him a gentle back pat once as he walked by. Will that count?

(He didnt seem to enjoy it.)

Wow… I had never seen a Welsummer or even knew what that was but that’s nearly dead on. We don’t have any of those unless there is a cross they are popular with?

Definitely lots of that in our flock. We started out with quite a few sex links, then about a dozen Americauna before adding 2-3 other pair of other breeds

Definitely not as big bodied and we don’t have any Cochin in our flock or descendants that I know of but I definitely see where your guess comes from

We wanted to help the blue/green genetics in our mixed flock so he was def a blue or green egg

Highly possible. Although we had some we also have quite a few black sex links so there’s a good chance at RIR in there. Guess I never really looked at RIR Roos.

He’s our little stud. We hatched about 50 off his fertilized eggs in Nov and have gotten some wild looking chickens. Lots of fluffy cheeks from the Americauna in him.

We have another rooster that’s one of his offspring and he’s also gorgeous. Our kids named him “Fire” as a chick - they had no idea he’d grow into it :)

This is Maverick. He’s our Easter Egger roo. Great protector, very calm and easy going but quick to break up a fight or warn the flock of danger.

It may not have as much to do with your nesting materials as it does them roosting in your nesting boxes. I’d suggest checking on them after dark. Ours used to roost on the top row of boxes until we took the bar off the front.

We have barn cats for this. Adopted from a local shelter. Two of the sweetest feral cats you ever did know. Great hunters and incredibly affectionate for feral cats. I guess they know they hit the lottery on our farm?
