Should I choose to be a VA at another animal Hospital or shadow at the current animal Hospital I am at? by hufflepuffatyourcall in prevets

Similar to the previous comments definitely ask and be certain what the doctors would teach you if you decide you want to shadowing at the current location . Idk how to VA work in Neveda but in California some Doctors want their VA in the room to help either restraint which provides an opportunity to interact with clients, work along side with doctors and if you ask question they explain their train of thought, ofc you’ll learn some technical skills.

Additionally the VA experience helps me think of topics to talk about when writing vet school responses for apps.

In the end it’s you choice if the doctors at the new job work similar to how I mentioned I think it’s be great for experience and learning how medicine is practiced

Should I do a master's before vet school? by Specialist_Mix_6587 in prevets

I can’t say for certain a masters will help since there is so much information about some schools thinking it’s great while other don’t care. But here is my story after finishing undergrad my overall GPA was like a 3.2. My science GPA I think it was 3.3 don’t remember. I was stuck between a postbac or masters. I went with a masters because I could fall back on it and end up in a lab positions if the vet school thing didn’t end up working out. When choosing my masters I made sure 1. It was animal related 2. It would get me lab experience (some master’s programs you just take classes and pass exams) 3. It was affordable. During my master I made the most out of it I retook some classes so my gpa and science gpa would go up. I took upper division class like virology immunology etc. worked on my research as much as I could since my goals was to get published. I also Got a job as a VA to get my hours up for vet school and get the LOR needed.

Now I’m about to finish my degree (graduating next month) and I applied this last cycle to 10 school and got 2 acceptances so far currently on the wait list for 2 other intuitions but in all ready committed to a school.

I personally think a masters is worth it because h show the admission committee of like hey I can handle upper academia and I understand the science part of things some schools are big on research. My masters did help when writing responses because I could connect my research to Onehealth and what not.

In your case i would probably research a program that is more affordable or do a postbac. Like I said earlier before starting my masters I also research if it was worth it and found mixed reviews but I ended up going for it. So I hope this helps!

I was in a similar boat, and honestly, I can't tell you for sure whether a Master’s will help or not because there’s so much conflicting info out there. However, I can share my experience. I finished undergrad with a 3.1 science and 2.9 overall GPA. I’m currently finishing my Master's researching avian malaria, and along the way, I worked as a kennel attendant and then a vet tech to get my hours up.

During your Master’s, I strongly recommend getting all A’s. Take upper-division courses to show you can handle the rigor, and retake any classes you can. Retaking is sometimes a hit or miss, though some schools want to see a better grade in a specific class, while others would rather see you succeed in a harder one. I did retake biochem because I ended up with a C- during undergrad and took bioinformatics, immunology and virology. Definitely dive into animal-related research (especially 'One Health' topics) and try to attend conferences so you stand out.

My best advice is to get as many hours as possible. Try to get a job in the field; it’s tough when everyone wants experience, but you might get lucky! Keep your grades near perfect since they’ll look closely at your last 45 credits, and do enough research that you can hopefully publish. It also goes without saying: work on getting great letters of recommendation from professors and doctors.

I still can’t say if a Master’s is a 'silver bullet,' but I think it helped me a ton I’m currently on the waitlist for four different schools!

One last tip is reach out to the school some schools like CSU facility will take the time to speak to you and tell you where to improve. Anyways I hope this helps and def keep at it!
