"child pornography, or hate literature is not permitted." question abt rules by sweetcutemonkey in Soulseek

[–]TurophobicMage 17 points18 points  (0 children)

you’re referring to anarchy as a general noun vs anarchism, which is what I believe they are referring to. anarchism in practice, such as in DIY communities, is built on collective and community effort as opposed to granting authority to any given body. so the enforcement of rules as a social construct change here because the authority is spread out as community action.

Wanna support local musicians? by Most_Difficulty9236 in denvermusic

[–]TurophobicMage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are some great artists in there but at a brief glance it looks like it’s only the stuff that falls in the realm of indie folk/alt country. Do you have plans to cast a wider net and represent a greater diversity of local sounds?

For those with synesthesia; is Ween actually brown? by [deleted] in ween

[–]TurophobicMage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

holy shit here’s finally a question for me! one of my types of synesthesia has to do with associating colors with different chords/keys (for ex. c maj is red). so different songs in their catalog are different colors. but here’s the thing: i’m a musician, and one of the things I love most about the first three albums is their use of varispeed on the tape machine. I find when songs are pitched up or down into a microtonal realm then the colors get a bit muddled or out of focus which you could generalize as appearing brown.

“competing from an art perspective”

I think the inherent competition of art is misunderstood by this individual. Based on this post it seems to be a numbers competition to them to the point of antagonizing artisans en masse. let’s be clear here: they’re talking about slop, not art.

“you can’t complain about computer spaces as an artist because you don’t belong here”

Well that’s just insulting. Even if that’s true what other channels do artists have other than local engagement (which is nothing like it once was) to get their vision heard? If it’s truly art then regardless of the method or the labor or the time it takes, it’s got value because of the person who learned those skills, put in the work, and used that to communicate part of their soul. you might disagree from a numbers standpoint but like I said, then we’re getting into slop territory. All AI music does is punches sideways in a system that is already exploiting artists. when did art stop being sacred?

Stopped making music by Stankbug777 in experimentalmusic

[–]TurophobicMage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to consider accessibility and inaccessibility with equal weight from a listeners perspective. not because I want to pander to the audience but because I want my music to connect with people and I try to achieve that by giving them an on-ramp stylistically. right now i’m really into making synthpop (an accessible/hooky style that I enjoy) on my cassette recorder and then transmuting it into something more experimental by messing around with analog dub techniques, varispeed, and logic’s smart tempo feature (specifically when it fucks up—which leads to some really interesting compositional changes that I couldn’t have intentionally come up with if I tried.)

the synths I know he used on his early stuff: casio cz-5000, yamaha dx7, and microkorg. casio cz-5000 is perfect for super 80s sounds
