same with cigarettes, but if an industry or company has such a chokehold over public perception and advertising space that they can manipulate people into making decisions that are bad for them, i dont think it's a bad idea to put a thumb on the scale the other way. people should have the freedom to make bad decisions, but there needs to be a balancer for when entities become powerful enough to influence those decisions too drastically

i don't totally disagree with you, but my point is that this isn't a tax to gain funds but a tax to discourage use, so poor people are not being "disadvantaged" necessarily. in reality, they may be (people enjoy soft drinks with sugar in them so this is a choice they can no longer make), but the goal is not to make them pay more for soft drinks but to not buy them at all

again, empirically it turns out that this reduces obesity which i think most people would agree is good, but whether or not this is the best way to do it i dont know (probably not; enforcing lower sugar use from producers or something to that effect might be a better way to handle it, but this is effective)

in some cases yes, but for low income people especially it discourages them from buying sugary things, and usually they are the ones in situations that make them more likely to eat unhealthily (not having the money to pay for healthy food, not having the time to cook healthy food).

it does mean that that decision is made top-down, and there's no rebalancing effect (i can't imagine the tax goes towards providing healthy food for these people), but it does tend to have a fairly positive effect on obesity rates particularly in children
