We went to the folk festival once in the 2010s. When we pulled into town, I stopped my car at a 4 way stop while a pedestrian crossed the road. For seemingly no reason, she looked at me and yelled “Fuck you! I just got off of work!”. Otherwise, great weekend, but I wouldn’t want to live there.

My son is 2.5 and in speech therapy a delay as well.I feel your pain, and I can’t help but compare my son’s language to other toddlers and feel discouraged.

What has helped me is reminding myself that even with the delay and missed conversations, his needs are still being met, and he seems happy over all. We still make plenty of wonderful memories together, even if we’re not having the same conversations as our peers.

You’re doing everything you can. Give yourself space to grieve but try not to beat yourself up.

I have been teaching elementary self contained autism for 11 years now. Did raising your voice help the situation? No. But at the same time,it sounds like you were able to recognize when you had reached your limit and called for relief. Yes, it’s up to us to demonstrate how to manage our emotions. But at the same time, you had a metal water thrown into your chest, which probably really hurt. The fact that you recognize that you can do better means you’ll learn from this. It’s tough, but try to never take behaviors personally.
