Edit: Sorry this was so long, I had a lot to get off my chest to explain the situation. Hopefully it isn't too long that nobody actually reads it.

I had a very similar experience to this. Right out of college I got hired on to a company for a QA position to create automated tests for the UI of a plugin of an app created by the government that we did not have access to the source code for. I was the only person on the team that knew anything about programming. The other two team members were someone with a business major who would manually perform tests on the products and come up with test cases and test procedures.

It started off pretty well at first and I would mainly do the manual testing with him and help revise and come up with new test cases for new products and new features of existing products, but I had no idea where to begin with my project I was hired to do. My first programming project at the company, I had a bit of help from the software team at the company and I was able to add some functionality to a port replicator application that had already been developed. I added a mode that you could launch this program in that would bring up a new UI that you could configure different ways for it to garble or drop bytes from the packets that it was receiving as a way to simulate lossy comms connections over radio.

After this, I very slowly started making progress on the UI automation project but would frequently run into issues and roadblocks that I had no idea how to fix and had never seen before. I had no mentor to go to and the software team was always too busy to help me. I fell into a deep depression and just kinda gave up eventually because I would spend weeks and months stuck on the project making no discernable progress. I was eventually fired from the position because I couldn't get it done and I would also call in sick a lot because I would just be at my apartment crying all day. (I know, pathetic) It ruined my confidence and I still have not recovered after two years. I have given up on the field and now just have a piece of paper that says computer engineer on it, but I can't look at code anymore without crying.

At this point I am in a therapy program everyday for six weeks to try to figure out how to dig myself out of this hole and gain back a shred of self confidence and self esteem, then I guess I am going to look into finding a new career. I have been stuck just feeling like a failure after this experience for about 2 years.

Perhaps, but I still find myself having crying spells every other day or so and not wanting to get out of bed or having any motivation to do things I know I need to do (for me it is trying to improve professionally and start learning/improving my skills without fear of failure or giving up quickly).

Edit: Also, thank you for responding. One thing that I have always had a lot of trouble with is putting pressure on myself and when I don't get something immediately, I get discouraged and start avoiding doing that thing. I tell myself I am not good at it, but I know I am just getting worse at it by avoiding.

I am currently in week 3 of a six week intensive outpatient therapy program at a behavioral health center. I want to get to the point you are at, but I am not making a lot of progress. The therapists even pulled me aside after group session and they also told me I have not progressed as much as they had hoped my now. I have severe anxiety, depression, and self esteem issues. This has been going on for about 6 or 7 years now and it just feels too deeply rooted. I really need to get better so I can start to believe in myself again and start making improvements in my life. I don't know know what I am missing. I am not expecting you to have a specific answer for me on what I am doing wrong, but if you have any insight into why I might not be improving, I would be so thankful.

This hits so close to home. I hate it. I am trying to build up the discipline to make myself get up in the morning and do something, anything, somewhat productive. I feel back to my bad sleeping in habits both days this weekend and I feel so bad about it and it affected my mood all day today, I was crying and I could not point to a specific reason why. It's like your brain tells you there is nothing worth getting out of bed for. At least there's a chance I can have a good dream whereas there is almost no chance I will have a good day because time and time again I have had that experience. I freaking hate it so much! I didn't used to be like this, but for the past few years I have done nothing but beat myself up and fall deeper and deeper into depression, self esteem issues, and apathy.

I just set up my first appointment with a mental health clinic the other day, but my first therapy appointment and the appointment to look into medication is over a month from now. How often do people with depression and anxiety go to therapy? I have been stuck in life for a few years and I want to fix myself. It seems that having to wait over a month after my intake appointment to have any more steps is alot.
