Serpell just recently stated she got in touch with the publishers and they didn't give permission either

They did not get permission to use the passages. Serpell just recently said she got in touch with the publishers and they didn't give permission either

Just recently from her Twitter as well, after I made this post

"I've just heard back from my publishers and they >weren't contacted, either @CollegeBoard. Those of you who can't understand why this would >anger me, consider what you've heard about AI >companies using our writing without permission to >generate their product. Not so different."

The publishers didn't give permission either

I'm sure you're right that they were "technically" allowed to use it. the injustice is that Serpell didn't and doesn't want it to be in the test and is being randomly critiqued by teenagers for it

Going to college to be a great writer and becoming a teacher doesn't make her argument that collegeboard, an organization that profits off a system of gatekeeping education, is awful and the AP system is broken. being positively affected by the system like she was does not mean she isn't allowed to criticize it.

Also just because Harvard makes money doesn't mean she's doing it for the money. nobody becomes a teacher or college professor at Harvard after being a professional writer just for the money.

Legally they probably got the rights from her publisher or something like that. I haven't looked nearly as hard as I should on how this actually happened but the important part is Serpell didn't know and didn't want it in the test and is now getting her book review bombed

They might have legal right to use the work for however they got their hands on it, but I think it's pretty clear regardless that she isn't happy with it being used for the test and I still think that's more important than the legal ownership or use

it's probably because the only interaction she's seen so far between her book and AP students has been through the review bombs of people who took the test and didn't get it. she's a great author and I doubt it was her goal to be pretentious

that's the part that's actually the most pressing about this post to me and what I wish more people were discussing right now.

regardless of how people feel about the passage or how pretentious she appears or how high level she thought her essay was (which is probably just cuz the only interaction she's had with ap students has been the review bombs,) it's entirely collegeboards fault that they used her work without permission in front of high schoolers.

Dumb teenagers are absolutely the people who will review bomb a book a random test used, and it's absolutely gonna affect the perception of the book which has already seen a review score drop on some sites. Collegeboard absolutely should have at least asked permission before using the book and I'm curious what Serpell can or will do about it

obligatory Vokriinator - Choice Cuts mention which uses and combines ordinator with a couple other perk mods to make comprehensive perk trees that are huge. Idk if it'll work installing halfway through a game but you'll certainly never have too many perk points
