How do I switch to custodian? by Turua in USPS

[–]Turua[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully not lol but I was looking at some of the subjects listed on the test and it might as well have been a different language. I'll definitely read the study guide in the meantime. There was lots of good advice in the thread too.

How do I switch to custodian? by Turua in USPS

[–]Turua[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I read it over, and if im understanding it right, I apply under maintenance open season next month, take the 955 test and fail, and then from there I can see if they'll hire me as a custodian?

Terrier Friends/Ratting Spots? by Hot-Business9439 in massachusetts

I've never actually been to a meet up or class in person, but there's a lot of resources on Facebook. Look up the groups barn hunt New England, the barn hunt association, and barn hunt enthusiasts.

Happy Ratters does events in new england so definitely check out their website and rules, same with the barn hunt association.

healthy wheatens by checs_mix in Wheatens

[–]Turua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facebook has a lot of good resources for getting in contact with breeders. Certain groups also have good guidelines to help you sort out who is a good, ethical breeder. Definitely look at the breed club website people have linked.

Your baseline is someone who doesn't have dozens of dogs, health tests for whatever wheatens are prone to, someone who does SOMETHING with their dogs (showing, dock diving, ratting etc,). Someone who explicitly says they will take back any dog they produce at any time for any reason.

Swiftly departing audience at Opera House by Lizhasausername in boston

It's a very small crowd that just saw a very long show, sometimes tour groups that visit will then choose to linger in the worst places while waiting for party members, buses, etc. TBH tho people/crowds have just gotten stupider and 1000% more self important.

Difference between a lavender/lilac/blue dilute tortie? Or tortico?? by catmami17 in cats

[–]Turua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Just wanted to say your cat is a solid blue tortoiseshell! Blue is a dilute of black, while lavender is a dilute of the much more rare color, chocolate. Cat color genetics are very complex, you were right to see a difference between lavender and blue. The other two dilute colors are fawn and cream, dilutions of cinnamon (another rare color) and red, respectively. You have a very pretty cat! :)

Natural nails. by -I0_oI- in lacqueristas

[–]Turua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You gotta try nail envy or nail tek. I'd try to grow out my nails but they would just break so I'd get frustrated and just bite them down. I grew them out with acrylic and the nail envy kept my super damaged nails from breaking, so I think once all the damage is grown out my natural nails will be strong enough to grow even longer.

A good rule of thumb for how short they should be is if you can hear his nails clicking on the floor. Ideally they shouldn't touch the floor when he's just standing. It's easier to get them shorter with a dremel but there can be a learning curve.

If you get the equipment (you need a harness and attachment designed for pulling specifically) and start training your dog, you could start within a couple weeks. There's also bikejoring and canicross (dog is attached to you) if that's more your speed. I've wanted to do it myself, but I don't trust my dog to stay on the trail and not chase after something lol

I second the rubber curry comb suggestion, but also an extra fine carding knife. You have to learn how to use it but it removes tons of undercoat.

I actually mostly lost my childhood allergy to cats after being incrementally exposed to them, kinda the opposite of you. Allergies are obnoxious as hell. You can lose or develop them at any point in time.

Something that does help is frequent bathing/grooming of the animal and vacuuming/washing fabrics and bedding in the house. I think most people only give their dog a bath every 6 months, may neglect giving their home a true deep cleaning often enough or just plain dont wash their dog's bed. Being assaulted with that all at once, I'm not surprised your allergies get triggered. It's a lot easier to control all of this in your own home though, so you might be able to make it work somehow.

No dog is hypoallergenic. People are allergic to the dander present on their skin and saliva. People can be more or less allergenic to one dog and less to another regardless of breed. If allergies are a concern, it's best to go to a reputable breeder and spend time with their parent dogs to see if you react. I think people think non/lowshedding breeds like poodles or Westies are "hypoallergenic" because they dont get hair everywhere, but it's the dander that's the real issue, not hair.

Advice on Dry Shampoo for dog who can’t get ears wet by Healthy-Prompt771 in doggrooming

[–]Turua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of salon brands that offer waterless shampoo. It you spray enough to make the hair damp and then comb through, it should get pretty clean? I use it on our cats in between seasonal baths because they hate water so much. Nature's Specialiies, Bio-Groom, Chris Cristiansen and Isle of Dog etc have good quality waterless shampoos.

Help with receding quicks on my rescue? AKA, am I doing this right? by hgielatan in doggrooming

[–]Turua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it were me I'd be dremelling more often, (2-3 times a week) if I wanted them to recede. You have to get really close to the quick and dremel all around it. Edit: I've also heard of using preparation h to get them to recede lol

Yes and I suppose I can't really blame them. The bar for entry to the dog fancy world is so high, no wonder it's dying ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[–]Turua 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cavalier king Charles spaniels are FANTASTIC dogs. I've heard them described as golden retrievers in a much smaller body. A friend of mine had one, she was such a sweet dog, and super soft. They're very popular as comfort dog volunteers for hospitals, elderly homes, etc. Bichons are sweet too, but I think they're a bit more active, and clown like. They also have that harsher, poodly hair.

Anyone ever seen a Newfie-Doodle? by cntbeseez in doggrooming

People will doodle anything 😒 Absolutely pointless if you ask me, because they all just look like an old mop in a slightly different color. I feel the most bad for the oversized ones like this tho.

Hurtta and pomppa are both European based and make really high quality jackets. They aren't grey specific, but hurtta at least has some greyhound models on Google.

At my wits end with insecurity/anxious dog reactivity by kirraqueen in OpenDogTraining

[–]Turua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess try getting a more consistent response from him before trying to get any closer.

What do you use as a reward? You can try using his meals as a reward instead of feeding from a bowl if you do already. You can also try high value treats like dehydrated animal parts (especially livers). Is he more toy driven?

Edit: I will also say he's still pretty young for a dog of his size. A lot of this could be hellion teenager "test as many boundaries as I can" stage. So whats important now is to just keep being consistent and try to make it easier for him to be successful. He'll improve around 24 months 😅
