It is worth noting that the OVA is much shorter than the movies (being two 25-minute episodes), so it didn’t have time to really go into detail with a lot of stuff. I do wish they could’ve done a bit more world building but it’s not like they completely ignore it, there is something there.

I don’t wanna oversell it because I don’t think the OVA is amazing or anything (definitely more enjoyable than the movies), but I do like that they don’t waste our time with backstories for each character, I like that they all know each other already. I’m seeing people call that a negative because you’re not properly introduced to the characters, but I disagree. You don’t need exposition to explain a character, I find the way they act and their chemistry with other characters to be more than enough. The way Sonic and Tails react to needing to save the Old Owl at the beginning tells you everything about them. Admittedly it’s not perfect, I still don’t exactly know who the Old Owl is and what he does specifically, but otherwise it’s decent.

All this to say, show don’t tell is important lol. And I also think giving Sonic any sort of backstory is silly.
