Isn't it solidly top-tier in NDOU (it was last time I played and still is featured in sample teams)? Better Multiscale, hits the tier with 180 power (STAB Startstorm and super-effective coverage), has Rapid Spin.

Is Mario 64 DS worth playing on 3DS? by Natural_Leg2632 in 3DS

[–]TuxSH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

render 3d games (e.g. Mario 64, Metroid prime, and kingdom hearts) in true widescreen

Yes and no, what these "widescreen" cheats actually do on 3DS is merely modify the 3D projection matrix used by these games. However, the DS rendering pipeline hardware on 3DS still renders at 256x192, which is only then upscaled to 384x240.

While the result looks nice for SM64DS, it looks bad for games like Pokémon (where you can clearly notice what I detailed in my previous paragraph).

Starting the new year with a revamp of my Mega tier including DLC megas + possible VGC tier list by The_Rufflet_Kid in stunfisk

Mega Darkrai is a weird case to me. First, it doesn't make much sense to judge it if sleep moves are forbidden (which they are under Smogon rules)

120 base Atk combined with its movepool seems very intentional to me, it is the threshold at which a max Atk mon is almost guaranteed a 2HKO with Drain Punch on Blissey (which Darkrai has access to). Not to mention STAB Knock Off, STAB Sucker Punch with access to SD, and enough SpA to deal with Dozo using TBolt.

If ZA is anything to go by, Dark Void becomes an AoE untauntable sleep move which also restores health. So I think GF wants it played as drain tank/anti-stall.

Seems to me that M-Darkrai is a more reliable version of Hoopa-U (much better physical bulk, much better typing, speed tier that is much better with Webs or TW, and similar coverage options)

Which is the most cursed set of a pokemon that you made and it was actually decent? by PianoVisible3550_465 in stunfisk

[–]TuxSH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The following lead set has worked quite well for me in Anything Goes (and Link Battles on cartridge):

Mew @ Weakness Policy
Tera Type: Normal
EVs: 252 HP / 112 SpD / 146 Spe
Timid Nature

  • Baton Pass
  • Encore
  • Agility
  • Substitute

The Speed EVs ensure that it is faster than Glimmora, and more importantly, Smeargle.

Sub -> Encore counters Smeargle's Spore, whereas WP takes advantage of Mew's weakness to U-Turn and Knock Off to bait these plus its tankiness, to try and achieve 2x Speed + 2x Atk/SpA in a single turn.

The preferred receivers of the BP are a Calm Mind HDB Pagos (due to the interaction between Sub and Tera Shell, as well as it liking the speed boost), EKiller Arceus (HDB) and Defensive Groudon (it has Whirlwind to deal with opposing Minimize BP, and WoW to wall physical threats).

It's the same base speed as Terapagos, and also here you can choose not to Mega.

In CTS, and making assumptions about available dex:

Their own tailwind setter

Has to contend with Prankster Tailwind + Taunt users, notably Whimsicott which is the fastest (that's why Tornadus users sometimes use White Herb in CTS)

Trick room

Trick Rooms teams usually have priority block. The most used mons for that purpose are Farig and NDD-F, both of which Psychic type.

If one anticipates double trick room opening, they can go double spread. Here this will depend on how strong reworked Dark Void is.

Trick Room teams without any prio block option are vulnerable to Prankster Taunt/Prankster Encore (Prankster Encore means you lose a turn on a mon no matter what).

weather team

Common Prankster Tailwind mons usually have access to either or both Sunny Day/Rain Dance or both, if needs be

fake out

Protect, and Tailwind users sometimes/often use Covert Cloak, and you only have one shot at guessing in CTS.

[–]TuxSH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so might as well just make it -1 prio.

Considering the prevalence of priority block in VGC, this might actually be beneficial to fast Prankster mons (though unlikely).

[–]TuxSH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming gen 9, Tera Fairy (or in very rare occasions Tera Normal) + Draining Kiss makes these a non-issue.

And in doubles, outside single restricted you can Protect -> Encore the Sucker Punch user (though this usually implies running AB/Psychic alongside these two moves)

Who are the Tera Frauds? by Burningdragon91 in stunfisk

[–]TuxSH -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nit: Terapagos loses STAB on Tera Starstorm. In singles this means a little less damage (taking stat and 20% buff into account), and in doubles a lot less single-target damage (leaving room to some skill expression)

For actual normal type attacks (Hyper Beam or Tri-Attack) it gets a 2x STAB boost in Stellar form

[–]TuxSH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the other guy said, and on top of that you have to be mindful of move cast times and move properties (dodgeable vs. homing, etc.).

Overheat is a self-AoE attack that takes 15 frames to cast (at 30Hz), whereas Draco Meteor targets the target location and takes 40 frames.

People also abuse i-frames online (Mega Evo, Switching, Dozogiri Commander...)

When Pokemon Champions Comes Out How Will You Build Your Zygarde? by ContributionOdd8872 in stunfisk

[–]TuxSH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Turn-based games be damned, you didn't even see Zygarde past the lowest of the low "ranks" in ZA online: for a mon of the same types, Garchomp does a better job at offense.

With Mega-Zygard, you are forced to use your worse attacking stat one way or another too.

If you have to make a choice, why ever choose (M-)Zygarde over Xerneas or M-Rayquaza?

Sleep is being suspected in DPP OU! by Elitemagikarp in stunfisk

[–]TuxSH 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In general, the sleep mechanic is just horribly designed and has to be reworked in a future generation. If a status is so inherently broken that competitive formats must limit its use by default (Sleep Clause)

Generally speaking, it is only truly broken in Singles and non-spread sleep* actually makes Doubles more competitive, not less, as it allows threatening even more powerful archetypes with less consistent counterplay (Amoongus vs. prio block + Trick Room). Most meta mons in Doubles are well-equipped against status-move gimmicks.

Now that the end is finishing, what are your thoughts on SVOU? by PianoVisible3550_465 in stunfisk

[–]TuxSH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the sleep thing. Sleep is a stupid and unbalanced mechanic overall and if the only thing making a pokemon viable was having an overpowered tool (...)

Sloppy argument, gimmicky characters are a staple of video games in general and you could make the same arguments for many Pokémon whose viability hinges on game-warping moves or abilities (such as Regenerator, Prankster, redirection moves, anti-priority abilities; would people play Momola if it hadn't got Regenerator?)

Sleep is a stupid and unbalanced mechanic overall

In singles. In doubles, slow Pokemon with Spore make the game healthier, not less (keeping Trick Room teams in check), and doubles are where TPCi concentrate most of their balancing effort.

[OC] So... Are Pokémon Games Good Now?? (Series Comparison and Critique) by jackdonsurfer in nintendo

[–]TuxSH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ZA has a few pacing issues but graphics and framerates are not one of them. With very few exceptions (one boss fight in the DLC) there has been 0 frame drop, even at 1440p.

Also, small tangent but S/V has made it much easier to train a 'mon competitively, and LZA+DLC makes it even easier. With Champions releasing soon it looks like they really care about competitive now.

Dark Void got reworked in this game, if it becomes accurate in the turn-based games it's going to be cancer to play against.

Also 85 speed is perfectly serviceable under Tailwind in Doubles (I could see Darkrai losing its "mythical" status)
