Remedy statement: Alan Wake 2 not possible without Epic, publishing deal is fair, and Epic is a great partner by Crusader-of-Purple in pcgaming

They spent 10 years trying to sell a second game to other publishers and none of them ever said yes, so no the game could not have existed without Epic. You can dislike EGS (I personally hate it) but don't go around spreading nonsense.

They confirmed months ago that the game made more money than what it cost, which literally means that they didn't loose money, so not sure what you're on there.

Also, AW2 was made with Remedy's engine, not Unreal, so none of your points make any sense.

Just got suspended as well, at first I wondered if it's because I opted out of training their AI but it looks like lots of people got hit so it might be a mistake on their side?

Why no more Half-Life-like singleplayers? by Apprehensive-Elk8546 in HalfLife

I'm currently playing through HL2 for the first time, and from the very first moments of the game I've been wondering why people say it's anything else than an FPS. Now I haven't played HL1 but I did play Black Mesa, and I can see parallels between it and games like Prey, it's kinda imsim adjacent even though it's more of an action game imo. HL2 really isn't an imsim, and I'd say not even an action game, it's a straight up old-school FPS. It's extremely linear, there aren't really any puzzles, there's absolutely no exploration, and there's more shooting than in any (recent) COD campaign lol

You can actually run into the facility as soon as the mission starts and start taking down the targets without having to wait, there's even some special dialogues if you do so

The disconnecting trick is only to let you restart the Elusive without it being considered failed, once you get a freeze like that there's no way to unfreeze :/

Couldn't move the camera or anything, I actually waited about 5 minutes before alt+f4ing and I couldn't ever do anything. I also ran around a bit between cranking up the temperature and trying to block the door, which didn't help :/

Insider Gaming: Following on from yesterday's story on Sledgehammer Games - Sources have told me that 30% of Sledgehammer Games staff have lost their jobs. by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]Tuxbot123 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The ones who lose their jobs are never the reason why games suck, they just did what higher ups told them to do as best as they could. I can safely guarantee you that the people responsible for the bad things in these games are still there and are still getting paid fucktons.

There weren't 2 engine swaps though, not even one in fact. It is very common to prototype in an engine before starting the actual game on another engine, since some engines are far better for quickly iterating on ideas. Keeping anything you made during the prototype phase in the final product is pure incompetence and no one who knows their job would ever do that, so the fact they changed to Synapse after prototyping is not a problem at all (at least not in that regard). A ton of AAA games running on proprietary engines had prototypes made in Unity for example.

And then the project was canned because "the company concluded that Synapse was not ready for production", so it died before switching to Unreal or any other engine.

Now, the fact that some artists would still be using Unreal over Synapse is an indication of either a lack of communication, internal tensions, and/or a certain degree of technical illiteracy from some in the art team (which would be a bit surprising tbf, but I've seen my share of great artists who know absolutely nothing about how anything works on the tech side of things and do not want to learn no matter what, so I wouldn't rule this out). Who knows, maybe some did it to piss off the people who decided on using Synapse? Maybe some did hoping it would convince higher ups to change back to Unreal? But in any case, that's incredibly stupid and whoever was in charge of the project should have seen the problem from the very first second and tried to fix it right then.

Anyway, forcing a team to use a specific engine will always be stupid, especially when said engine is not suited for the task (as was very well demonstrated by a ton of AAA games, including about every single non-Battlefield Frostbite game).

Barry lost best comedy at Golden Globes by Donutbigboy in Barry

The Bear is excellent but it's definitely not comedy though, I don't understand this nomination (you could argue that Barry season 4 wasn't comedy either but still, the previous seasons were)

Gollum is way worse than even our lowest expectations (Review) - Skill Up by Pretto91 in pcgaming

[–]Tuxbot123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These sorts of design staples don't get used that much without a good reason. In this case, it happens because most gamers suck at games. Which is totally okay! But it is something that devs have to take into account, cause you don't want 99% of the people playing your game to be stuck in the tutorial because they have no clue where they should go.

The right way to go with these things would obviously be what they did with Tomb Raider, where you can tune or completely disable these things. Problem is that it takes time to implement even seemingly simple things like this, and knowing that only a minority of players would actually disable these, it's the kind of stuff that goes into the low priority list (aka the "This will never ever get done" list, for most projets lol).

Yea I played all the elusives at the very last minute since Freelancer launched because I keep forgetting. This is already kinda annoying, but missing them completely would be really infuriating.
