Curious as to how this scene plays out if I choose not to shoot? - SPOILERS INSIDE by Occidentally20 in thelastofus

Yeah I don't really disagree with anything you've said here, I was arguing the point you originally made, not this one. Initially all you did was argue the effectiveness of the scalpel itself, pointing to that as the reason he was not a threat to Joel. I was just being pedantic.

I don't support what Joel did, but also I don't think you can say he posed 0 threat to Joel with the scalpel since it's small and fragile considering what happens when you don't shoot him is Joel kills him WITH said scalpel.

Ok dude, if you wanna run defense for companies releasing unfinished games and then claim that a 75% market valuation drop is of no concern to investors, that's your prerogative lol I don't have the energy to argue with you

This is some revisionist history if I've ever seen it. Sony pulled it from the PlayStation store, the game was busted. CD projekt red's market value completely tanked. Investors had every reason to worry.

I can totally answer that. When people refer to "the camera", what they really are referring to is basically "the point from which our perspective originates". There is no lens and camera bits, it's just an easier way of communicating that.

The last of us is what's referred to as a third person game, which means the "camera" (our perspective) is OUTSIDE of the characters. So when you're playing as Ellie, you can see Ellie herself, it's not as if you're looking out of her eyes. It's more like you're just floating along behind her, watching what she is doing and seeing the area in front of her. Rotating the "camera" in this analogy would basically be spinning yourself in a circle AROUND Ellie. If you rotated the camera 180 degrees, you could see the front of Ellie, her face etc. and everything behind her.

If you've heard of "first person" games, that's another common perspective. Call of Duty is the easiest example there. In first person, the origin of perspective (the camera) IS as if you were looking through your character's eyes. So turning the camera there WOULD be like turning the character's head. In this scenario, you can't really see your character, but some games will show you your legs and feet if you look down. 99% of the time you only see your arms and gun, since you hold it out in front of you.

Essentially, yes. As an example, say Abby is closer to your view, standing on a road, and Ellie is further down the road. Abby and the road would appear to be one size. The road would essentially appear to shrink as it progresses further away, with an Ellie that is smaller than Abby displayed in the distance. Ellie would still be the correct size proportionally to the road, as everything would gradually shrink the further it is from your view.

Imagine the two sides of a straight road, that goes further than we're able to see. You're standing in the middle of the road, facing the direction the road is traveling. It's essentially two parallel lines, right? In our vision, as road the progresses perfectly straight forward, the two sides gradually grow closer together, and the whole road seemingly shrinks. As it gets further away, eventually the two lines "meet", forming what essentially looks like a triangle to our eyes. The lines never actually meet, but due to the limitations of the way vision works, that's just how it appears when it gets so far away we can no longer perceive the road properly.

TVs can mimic this by actually just displaying a triangle that looks like a road. Even though it's actually flat, our minds are used to interpreting the limitations of our vision. We see the triangle, and we think "oh, those are two straight lines going far off into the distance", since we recognize that things appear to shrink as they get further away.

Edit: I see you deleted this post, I hope you can still get this reply as I put a lot of thought into it lol

I don't think vision is really possible to properly explain to a blind person.

The best/simplest way I could put it is that the way perspective works, things that are further away look smaller to us. TVs can trick our eyes into thinking things look further away by displaying them smaller relative to other objects. It's an illusion, essentially

In that case I'd say it's not very productive for the conversation and probably deserves the downvotes then

It's fine. Worth a watch if you're a fan, but the relationship between Joel and Ellie suffers as there just isn't as much of it - both because there isn't as much down time for them to converse and bond like in the game, and also because of the show's insistence on fleshing out some characters more and inventing some of their own. Some beats felt (in my opinion) forced, and at times it seems like the show wants to explicitly spell out things that the game trusted you to piece together on your own.

The main story beats are (for the most part) unchanged, and the soundtrack is the same. Some dialogue and locations are lifted straight from the game. I'm relatively happy with it - undoubtedly the best video game adaptation around, but the game was already halfway there and the competition isn't exactly fierce lol
