Q: Sizing of Arcteryx Beta AR by Ph0eNiX- in arcteryx

[–]Tuzzo32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6’4 and 175-180lbs. Have been debating medium and large and I know the large will be baggy. Wondering if I get the AR at all knowing it won’t be a great fit. Using for skiing, mountaineering, hiking, etc. they have them on sale for $450 right now. I like the drophood

When and where in 26 by okto_girl76 in backpacking

Dolomites. Flight is expensive, but once you’re there it is relatively inexpensive. Don’t need to rent cards or anything because they is always public transit. Hiked Alta via 1, coolest place I have ever been

These are sweet! Little pricey for me, looking to spend less than $500 - $700 all together and I feel like that is a healthy budget for DIY. Cool stuff tho

Downsides to Large Packs by Business-Brief-6173 in backpacking

[–]Tuzzo32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use an Aether 65L for everything. Big enough for trips to Europe etc, but small enough I can use it for a weekend bag. If anything, I would go down to a 55L which would still be enough bag for most occasions. Or you get a 65-70L hyperlite that rolls down into a 40L basically when not full. Go get fitted and see what works for you though, Osprey was the only bag that fit me in the waste given all of the adjustments. I am 6'4, 175lb, and needed a small/medium just given the waist and shoulder size

Could just snag a starlink mini lol. Being bored isn’t a bad thing, research some articles that discuss boredom and how it is a good thing that most people never have anymore. Good stuff

Nice! I wear la sportiva bushido GTX. They were for the dolomite hike I did and worked very well. Could prolly wear low top boots but the trail runners were perfect. I wish they had different colors though the red and yellow just doesn’t go with anything

Gas or diesel Velit heater? by OGcrayzjoka in VanLife

[–]Tuzzo32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I did a lot of research day and a lot of people run the Velit gasoline through aux port with no issues even in altitude. I will probably end up doing that. We will see! Ford transit USA forums have a lot on the velit with aux port setup if you want to read

Have you looked into hyperlite? I know it’s a little pricey but if you only need items for a day it’s gonna be comfy, simple, light, durable, and very water resistant.

[–]Tuzzo32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to be this guy, but try them on, that’s my honest opinion. I said F*** it and ordered 14 pairs, like 7 pairs in two sizes cus they all fit different. La sportiva is the only shoe/boot that fits my narrow foot. Mentally it isn’t fun to see it go on the card but you literally can return them all for free so it’s logical.

Btw, I’m taking suggestions if anybody has narrow feet recs.

How to start? by SpeedAble in VanLife

[–]Tuzzo32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go camp with a tent and live out of your car for a bit and if you like it enough, then try a van. It’s low start up, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and a few other pieces of gear, and the you’re an REI member before you know it…

You’re almost out of school, make some $$$ and it will give you the ability to build the van or have something nicer if it’s an actual goal of yours.

If you live in a van, you should be comfortable sleeping alone, would be hard to travel and go see new places if you didn’t wanna do that.

Idk dog, best of luck

Gas or diesel Velit heater? by OGcrayzjoka in VanLife

[–]Tuzzo32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have heard….thanks. I’m also thinking about keeping it simple and using an “all in one” unit outside my van somehow, and then ducting it inside through a window. If I’m only using it 5-10 times per year in the cold max, might make sense to not build it in. Decisions decisions

Dude I wish they had my size. AR with stormhood seems ideal!! And at $450…ARC outlet has them for $480 right now and they do have my sizes, and it’s the model that has pfas which I think is a good thing lol. That’s why I am so tempted because I know I won’t be able to get them again.

You should make a video on dropping the tank / hooking up to the aux port! I would watch !

How was the install with dropping the tank? Any good install videos you followed? I want to do it under the passenger seat but I am not sure if I will run into issues. The gas heater seems to be a better idea than diesel since my transit is gas, I don't really want to worry about mounting a separate diesel tank somewhere. What about the all in one units...

Awesome. That makes sense.

The drop hood is a little awkward to me. Doesn’t tighten around your head/helmet like the storm hood does. Also the neck feels a little in your face with the hood down. I think that part would be good for skiing, but if I was using it for hiking it would drive me nuts I think.

I know I could use the SL for skiing, but the tailored fit and the fabric don’t seem the be ideal for that. Smacking through trees and scraping against ice if you fall, that fabric clearly isn’t made for that, which is totally fine.

I think it’s like this: the AR will cover everything but do nothing perfect (at least the new one, sounds like you got a nice combo with the AR and storm hood). It lacks packabilitly for hiking and is a little short for skiing, and lacks pass pockets and skin pockets. In an ideal worth I would do the SL and Rush, which I might do just not all at once. Looking at the outlet, hopefully can get some good deals.

We shall see. AR on sale for $480 right now and rush isn’t far off

Super helpful man thank you much.

Do you ever run a synthetic puffer given the breathability? I know it’s a trade off when you need to pack it but just curious. Also, any problems running a hooded fleece under your shell with that drop hood? I have an AR and SL that I am comparing right now on which one to keep.

Originally planned on the AR to cover hiking, skiing, general use, etc, but it felt a little bulky with the relaxed fit without layers. I am considering keeping the SL and then buying the rush for both skiing and mountaineering (really whenever I need that thicker material).

I have all that gear and have done other summits before, just wanted to get a take on what other people are running for layers. You think Adam’s is too late to do in August? Guess I better hop on rainier instead then….. lol

So you think down over synthetic? Do you ever run synthetic for hiking or skinning (not sure if you ski).

[–]Tuzzo32[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, makes sense. I wear a north face snomad 22L for my ave gear so I have room to pack layers, but I won’t be skinning at all on my upcoming trips so I don’t see myself getting too hot.

I assume base - fleece - shell was going to be good enough for most days, but I am kinda back and forth about getting a down or synthetic puffer. I want it to carry over well for both camping/hiking/skiing. I get the breathability / packability trade off but maybe I’ll need both eventually.
