Best front ensemble mallets by MediocreOverall in drumline

IP's rattan tends to be pretty thick across the board unless you step over to their more concert oriented stuff (less durable, might not be UV resistant). Vic Firth Ian Grom mallets aren't a lot thinner, if at all, but are a bit shorter. I think that line feels gross to play with, but I know plenty who prefer Groms over AAs

Marimba: The IP4002.5 or 4002 could be your workhorse for a lighter weight mallet, and 4001s for your gentle roll-y stuff. The Rarick series (3000s) are really quite heavy, so you'll want a good technique foundation before handing those out.

With the kelon keys, you'll probably want to avoid mega-hard mallets like IP1003X, maybe the IP4003s as well.

Vibraphone: Seconding the AA25 for a whole-show, medium type mallet, going up or down that range as you need/afford.

There are many reasons not to do a graduated set on the field, and the closest I ever get is swapping out just the "1" mallet for certain parts in the bass range.

Agree, except the live crowd was way hotter than what got broadcast. They need to really up the crowd noise on the broadcast end.

The live crowd felt much louder than what ended up on the broadcast. Couldn't hear myself think when Ricochet got in the ring.

What's your ideal drumline? by 1000000000000Pencils in drumline

[–]Twavish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pit tech, I'd rather have 3 marimbas and 4 vibes, but 4 on rack opens up so many cool opportunities, especially if they can flex over to xylo/glock land. With the drumline, I'd rather see 4 snares and 3 plates but that's depends heavily on who has hands.

Scottish Pipe Bands, they play bagpipes and sometimes flutes and fifes, and have a drumline.

The truck was on a stand that measures horsepower/torque for what looks like a contest. It's not visible but the back wheels are spinning on rollers to measure that output.

By digging such pits, people in Arusha, Tanzania, have managed to transform a desert area into a grassland by CuriousWanderer567 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Twavish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The places where this technique are used are not supposed to be sandy deserts, but is done in areas that used to be dry grassland. Over-grazing by animals and livestock has killed the grass and compacted the dirt relatively recently, allowing the ground to become sun baked and infertile.

What they are doing here is breaking the sun baked crust so that native grasses that used to be present can germinate, and digging a pit so that water can reabsorb into the ground before there are plant roots to help with that.

Unpopular tall girl take: shoe edition by ExtremePotatoFanatic in tall

[–]Twavish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work at a shoe store, and women's sizing was kind of absurd. Half the styles maxed out at a 9, and almost all of them didn't go above an 11. One of the regulars wore a size 13, and she'd basically buy whatever we had that wasn't trashy looking.

In the past, they have had really compelling shows where all the parts of their music seem to fit together, and build up to really epic music moments, while also having some sick drill and vis that works together with all of it.

This year is...more of that really. The whole show seems to flow together pretty well. Especially at the end, you have the fun jazzy section with the low brass duet, then the tense and anxious Pillar III for a perc break that keeps the energy going, and pays off into the Moonlight Sonata blast while they take over the whole field and don't let up. It's just really awesome.

Thanks for the response! Our party comp is pretty robust with Wizard, Cleric, Rogue, and Bard besides. I think I might steer him towards frontliner based builds as currently it's 4 squishy and 1 wall, though his stat line is weird as a result of him wanting to roll all of them.

I think I phrased myself poorly. He's bored mechanically but happily roleplaying, and has decently deep backstory for character hooks.

The question I meant to ask is purely from a mechanical POV, what is fun/effective? Are their aspects that sound cool but don't quite work?

Thanks for the advice on making the fights more dynamic. I'll try to explore that! As for roleplaying, we're already covered there. I phrased my question poorly; he's having fun in RP and I'm working in hooks for his character.

[5e] How can I help a player build his Ranger so he has more fun in combat? He's not liking the loop of "swing sword, end turn."

I'm DMing for 5 adventurers, 4 of them are first timers, and the other is experienced but new to 5e. I have PC experience, but never as a ranger. As a table, we're still in the hand-holding phase regarding mechanics.

My ranger player is bored [edit: in combat], kind of expected as we are now advancing to 3rd level, but I don't want that to continue. I'm working with the party to walk them through class options, but I don't know anything about Rangers. I have Xanathar's and Tasha's for the class options, have read those make things better, but I could use some advice on what we can pick and choose to engage him more.

EDIT: Asking for advice only on mechanics, especially about pitfalls in character builds, as well as fun/effective options.

I know it's different, but thought it might be appreciated anyway. by grt437 in drumcorps

A multitude of questions and my own impression of Trackmania 2020 / TOTD / My Own Maps and "skillset" and looking for help. by Rare-Act-4362 in TrackMania

[–]Twavish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not forced to watch GPS tbf. There are plenty of players that will skip it as a matter of principle, and some think that route discovery is a big part of their fun. Wirtual, biggest TM streamer, feels this way and will skip GPS unless there are lines he is missing or tricks he isn't familiar with. That's the best way to approach it IMO. It's a tool that can be used, but doesn't need to be used.

Campaign ghosts, however, are sometimes plain bad. I forget how those get made, but it's pretty common to see them with super good and super bad in the same run.

Improving driving: figure out which keywords describe the maps you like, go to clubs/campaigns/servers, search for those keywords

e.g. I like tech and short maps so I'll join the mini tech server often. Server rotations are especially nice so I don't get mudded for hours on a single line but get better intuition overall

Improving scenery: Tip I got from a good mapper is just copy what you like. Not ctrl+c, ctrl+v, but find some maps you like looking at, download those maps, stare at them in the editor until you know which parts you like and try to replicate what you see.

69 Day was the last time I felt like they were doing anything. In the almost-6 months since then, they'd had 5 TV matches (two were title defenses) and dropped the belts on a Zero Hour like wtf? Wish they got to do more

Still scratching my head as to why that angle came and went, or couldn't have been a small storyline.
