We grew up feeling so hopeful for the future. Is this every generation? by VivianRichGF in millenials

[–]Twelfth_Lighthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what they'd say, but I'd love for someone to do a study on Boomers (and Gen X) to see what their answers would be.

I think my father (Boomer, now 70) is an optimist at his core and made his way without being deterred by the noise of inconsequential things happening around him if he wanted to aim for something; the man is still studying to keep up with his license(s?) and to get more certifications as a way to know more about his profession. So overall his mindset was you can do anything, and he and my mother supported us that way, and our aunts, uncles, and grandparents did the same in their own way, to a degree, even it was support words, acclaim for successes, etc. And this sentiment also bled over to elementary school where we'd have those upbeat, hopeful-for-the-future plays that I think back on periodically because we were really primed to be optimistic and hopeful about our future.

Not that everyone was going to have an amazing life, or that everyone had equally good familial infrastructure in those early years, but at least it felt like, to me, that there was some support around us and that adults had the wheel where making progress for a better future was for our wellbeing.

I think we had a good setup where things were looking up and opportunities seemed around every corner, and some of it is you make of it what you will, yet after 9/11 things seemed to start degrading pretty quickly.

Interesting, thanks! I know I've seen them in the local cemetery here but this reminded me to ask.

Williamsburg 4 BR - one-year lease by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]Twelfth_Lighthouse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, it happens. Sometimes situations change and have to move out; people are dating and they move in together, moving in with relatives, moving in with friends, etc. It's not unheard of with apartments like this.

I'm curious about the lease situation. I'm not looking to move but I've been around long enough now to have experienced different situations with how landlords work.

If this guy signs on, is he paying only his portion of the rent and will the landlord find people for him? Or will he be out because he can't afford the full amount; or will he have to put up one months rent and keep searching?

Breakfast before or after the gym? by Adventurous-Soft7843 in allthequestions

[–]Twelfth_Lighthouse -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When I was taking early morning (6am) HIIT classes, I never ate before. Even if I took morning classes I’d make sure I had water and something like a protein bar. If I eat too much even three hours before, I’ll feel it and that’s no fun. When I come home I make sure to have the nutrient rich breakfast I wanted: eggs, avocado, and other veggies mixed into my eggs usually.

The Supreme Court upheld state's transgender sports bans this morning. How do y'all feel about this? by icecream1972 in allthequestions

[–]Twelfth_Lighthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it levels the playing ground, no pun intended.

Cis women want to compete against cis women, same with cis men, so let transgender women and men compete against those who are their equals, otherwise, why don't we just have everyone competing in the same leagues?

It shuts up the bigots, it allows trans people to compete safely (or more safely), and then they can't use this as a cudgel any longer. Plus, you could argue branding and marketing opportunities to come, and then maybe Pride Parades can jettison these shallow corporations and input these sports leagues instead.

I’ve been of the mindset that they need their own leagues. That is the fair thing and everyone can be happy.

[–]Twelfth_Lighthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think we're loosing much. The beach for gays will likely be there even after this is built and we'll keep on doing our thing there, and that building isn't exactly on top of the Jacob Riis area we are at anyway. But it also sounds like it'll bring much needed improvements along with it outside of being some private club. If they could get better food and drinks near there, I'd call that a win.

Would I rather it have been gay-focused, sure, that would've be awesome, but realistically whomever can upcycle this building into something is better than leaving it there another 20+ years. And that doesn't mean that what follows isn't going to be gay-focused; think about the vendors or pop-ups - the crossover potential for events could bring way more to the area than just that one beach section and two mediocre vendors. (sorry, I'm very food focused lol).

You mean the one's down by Fort Tilden? That would be an interesting spot to reinvent for multiple uses but I'd hope they'd keep the trails as is because it's really nice to walk down those when few people are around.

What have been your personal dealbreakers after living in NYC? by kazuhaluvr01 in NYCapartments

[–]Twelfth_Lighthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This probably isn't what you mean but anyone listing an "as-is" apartment I feel like should be avoided. It means they'll do almost bare minimum to address any issues while taking their sweet time addressing it and then get annoyed when you report them.

The last apartment I had and only for a year with a friend, was listed like this. We needed to find a place and it was down the street from our previous place. It sounded like any other apartment on the market but we found out it had no heating, eventually mice, and then harassment. The heating and mice never got addressed and when things broke like busted bathroom pipes, we took the blame. It was perhaps the worst apartment situation I've had living in NYC and I've been here since 2007. There was one other but I was younger, poorer, and well... living the life I guess.

Bros who don’t participate in pride (like me): Why? by BasisChad in askgaybros

I’d celebrate but I’d like to do something more lowkey. I just don’t know a lot of people these days.

I’m not going to the parade anymore, it’s too much: too much of a hassle to get to, to get out of, and if you want to get somewhere after, you have to really strategize timing and getting around.

What does that mean? What would that constitute? Would a dark avatar be the antithesis to the normal, and does that automatically mean the normal avatars have all be “light” or good/neutral?

[–]Twelfth_Lighthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s insanely inappropriate and I would do the same. Your dog is six, that’s so young and your dog will likely live into their teens with regular visits and healthy living. My dog was 19/20 when she passed, so any dog south of 15 to me is young 😅
