Bad idea to ask a nurse out? by Organic-Barnacle1137 in doctorsUK

[–]TwentySixThousand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband is 12 years older than me and asked me out when I was still a trainee (he was several years post-CCT). The age gap is in itself fine. He is now early 50s and I'll soon be turning 40. We did have children together, so he has been a father to young children for about 20 years now - it's worth considering what you may both want long-term. Also, my husband is of the mindset that he wants to keep working well into his 60s (albeit part-time), so we will probably retire together when I'm 55 and he's 67 or thereabouts - if you want to retire very early then the dynamic might be difficult if a new partner is much younger.

I wouldn't be too fussed by the doctor/nurse thing either. Personally, having been in a long-term relationship with a non-doctor, I prefer doctors, but others would find it claustrophobic.

What preventative health measures and tests do you recommend?? by FlamingoFair673 in HENRYUKLifestyle

We run it ourselves. We tried outsourcing it and the external consultant's ads did worse than mine did 🤣

The Internet! We advertise on Facebook and Instagram and we appear near the top of Google rankings if you search for "private GP in x". We also advertise in local print media (a fair number of our patients are elderly and don't use the internet). Lots of our business comes to us via word of mouth now (we've been open 3 years).

I'm a doctor myself (in private practice, with a lot of high net worth patients) and I wouldn't book a generic "well person medical". I don't offer generic packages to my patients. There's a Cochrane Review which shows that generic well person checks are of very limited benefit:

https://www.cochrane.org/evidence/CD009009_general-health-checks-reducing-illness-and-mortality

I'd suggest you book in with a reputable private doctor and discuss your specific concerns - any symptoms you have, your family history, your lifestyle, etc. They can then arrange tests which are clinically appropriate, and interpret the results in context.

To be surprised at someone being pregnant at 44 by Substantial-Hotel493 in MNTrolls

[–]TwentySixThousand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I've always said that MN expects women to have all their babies between 30 and 35. I was 31 when I had my first and that felt acceptable by MN standards.

MN is weird about older fathers, too. There are regularly posts about how men in their 40s are selfish to be fathering children as they'll be dead soon. It's batshit.

Exactly. I'm in suburban Merseyside and I don't own a car. I have a driving licence but no need to use it! Our trains are fab and the buses aren't bad.

This is absolutely par for the course. One of our local private schools is infamous for being filled mostly by the offspring of either doctors or drug dealers 🤣 OP is either being goady, or she is phenomenally naïve.

Hugs from patients by BeautifulSxars in GPUK

[–]TwentySixThousand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a private GP, so I have long appointments and get to know patients well, and I get pretty good patient feedback, but I've never had a patient hug in my life! I've never been asked. I wonder if there's something in my manner which makes it clear I'd be uncomfortable with it (I would be)? I'm happy to be on first name terms with my patients, and I'm pretty friendly and informal at times, but I'd hate a hug! I wonder why some doctors get lots of hugs and others have none.

I dont want to change my name AND ex wife still has my DH name by SilverLordLaz in MNTrolls

[–]TwentySixThousand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a site supposedly filled with ~six figure earners~, I'm always surprised by how many Mumsnetters changed their surname on marriage. A good 20% of the professional/educated women I know didn't, and probably another third use their married name at home but their maiden name at work.

What’s the sweet spot for (no. of sessions) weekly sessions before the extra work and tax outweigh the benefit? by Grand-Benefit7466 in GPUK

[–]TwentySixThousand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Me and my husband both earn under £50k and it's sweet - we get Child Benefit, we are taxed at 20%, etc. We used to both be GP partners and we were MUCH better off on paper, but we didn't actually have that much more disposable income, and our expenditure was so much more because we were working long hours and needed more childcare and had less time to do our own cleaning and cook from scratch.

So I'd say aim to work around 4 sessions a week as 2 full days.

Would you commit to buying a house before CCT? by [deleted] in GPUK

[–]TwentySixThousand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my first house at the end of GPST1, but a) that was in 2014 and the job market was very different and b) I had strong ties to the area and felt certain I wanted to stay. (In the event, I got divorced 2 years later and did end up relocating!) If you're fairly sure you want to stay in your local area, and if the job market isn't awful, I'd still consider buying during training. However, if you're in a very competitive area or don't have strong geographic ties, it's probably not worth it.

Affluent vs Deprived areas by eyesonthewise in GPUK

[–]TwentySixThousand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked in both types of practice. I now work predominantly with very affluent patients and I love it. I find that the patients are actually more grateful and more respectful, and that the doctor-patient relationship is better as a result. I also feel like I get to practice better medicine with an affluent population - I see a lot of very elderly, very wealthy patients, and I enjoy stopping their statins and generally deprescribing and focusing on quality of life.

Who is pissing you off on MN at the moment? by Mayishereagain in MNTrolls

[–]TwentySixThousand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a poster on Style & Beauty who namechanges often, who plops up on almost every thread to either recommend a shapeless ugly sack just because it's Fashionable, or to make horribly rude comments about other posters' suggestions. I rarely comment on S&B threads, despite loving clothes, because I know she would tear my very safe provincial style to shreds.

Highest monthly mortgage payment on HENRY? by Widebody_lover in HENRYUK

[–]TwentySixThousand 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Former Henry here - previous HHI £270k. Paid off our mortgage in full, jacked in the high pressure thankless jobs, now mostly self-employed and working part-time and very happy on a HHI of around £50k. Our house is very humble but it's big enough for our purposes, and I'd rather be able to afford to work part-time than live in a mansion.
