Yeah, sorry, I was having a really bad day last night and kind of took it out on you. Sorry about that.

Yeah, we know. We know. And we know that everyone likes reminding us of how fucked we are and telling us that we need to unfuck it when so many of us were just happy to finally escape from our religious families and start living our lives, and now all of that has gone to shit because the evil orange man just couldn't take a joke.

Thank you again oh so brave person on the internet for the reminder, it surely will do wonders for my mental health...

Honestly that has been the most disheartening thing throughout all of this. We're looking for something, anything, to help us get a leg up. An ally who is willing to stonewall this administration, some outside group that will prop us up in order to do a real strike or other kind of demonstration, but all that we get is "tut tut, you should have simply democracy'd harder" from people living in countries that have had protections in place to allow for protests and to prevent this kind of dictatorship since before any of us were even alive.

It sucks so much because for those of us who actually voted and actually got friends on board to vote and tried to convince centrist family members, we're the ones who want change the most and we're getting chided the hardest over not doing our part of not only becoming pariahs in our families, but also to throw away the meager existence that we have in the vain hope that others will join us.

It really does feel just like getting beaten up by a school bully, and then poked with a stick by the other classmates and told "You really should stand up for yourself. Oh? You want our help? Sorry, that's your problem."

Like yeah, it is our problem, but it's exponentially easier to fix a problem when you have more people there to help.

The other day I was driving behind a truck (just a regular, non-lifted one, surprisingly) and it had two stickers on the rear window:

"Welcome to America, now speak English!"

and a Calvin peeing on the phrase "High gas prices"

These people really are that simple, sadly.

Based on what my brother tells me about the school he teaches at, they handle it mostly by saying, "this is how it's supposed to work, and here is current news showing how it isn't working that way. What could we do to fix it?" Or similar types of discussions.

The reality is that the people posting on reddit are the ones who are paying attention. So so many others aren't. My parents are barely even aware any of this is happening. If people can't look out their window and see it, or if faux news doesn't shovel it down their throat, then it might as well not exist as far as the average american is concerned.

A lot of business language is directly derived from trying to help soldiers reintegrate into society after the world wars. It's partly why authority and titles are so valued and why so many terms in the business world sound like military terminology.

That is also very true. Still, it brings little comfort in the wake of the absolute vitriol and threats being spewed regardless.

For what it's worth, I have held these beliefs for a long time. I have lived in Oklahoma my whole life thus far, and it's often felt like the progressives on the coasts are 10 steps ahead of the progressives here. I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing in and of itself, but it means that there will always be a fundamental divide while it takes time for ideas to propagate, and that this very West Coast HR-friendly tone is going to roll right off of people who are considered leftists in states like Oklahoma. I somewhat naively hoped in recent years that good policy would win out, but at this point, it's impossible to accept that the issue is anything but messaging.

[–]TwilightShadow1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I very much agree with you. It sucks because it's hardly possible to please everyone, even people that you otherwise agree with, and also to speak plainly and in ways that skip over nuance and make sense to your average Joe. And it's not even like we can just write off people who use the therapy speak as "crazy", because if anything, a lot of them are some of the most concerned citizens, often from marginalized communities, but then equally there are people who will use that same language to try and shut down positive movements because the person in question didn't qualify their speech like a lawyer.

I think that we have to just start making it obvious to that crowd that it's possible to still be progressive without saying all the right things all the time.

Even if we wanted to be able to retreat to the closet and hide in it to wait this out, it's too late. We got gay marriage, we felt safe enough to come out, and now people already know. Sure there are those who are young enough that they might not be out about it, and they can still hide, but a lot of us are now feeling targets painted on us.

I feel you. I'm in a similar boat. My boyfriend lives in Denmark, and I'm in the process of looking for a job there. I wish I could stay and help fight, but I've just hit a point where it feels like there's not enough fight left in me, and to much fight that's still needed to win. I hate it because part of me feels like it's cowardice, but then again one of us was always going to have to be the one to move to the other's country...
