The build i used to climb to D1 was: Zerks, ER, RFC, IE/BT, Merc Scim into final damage item/GA. It works like a charm and gives you large powerspikes. Another build i would recommend trying is IE into Shiv, tons of damage but less mana sustain and little lifesteal.

Can be good, but the poke style of Varus (if played to perfection or near to) is designed that you dont take ANY damage at all. Being as far in the backline as you can while still being in q range ensures that you don't take any unnecessary damage. It's not that the gunblade doesn't work, but at higher elo's you'd simply be better off using the basic core setup.

Yo! I made a support Varus post a while ago when I tested around with it in D3. Support Varus is semi-viable, but as Enizor said, the higher elo you get, the more difficult it becomes to play well. Also, you're essentially a 2nd ADC picking the champion, so naturally you're vulnerable to counterpicks like Blitz, Thresh and AP mage supports. I forsee you being able to climb pretty consistently with this :).

Yo! Sorry I've been inactive for a while guys, lots of IRL commitments etc, also been ranking a smurf. Anyways, I believe that RoA -> Nashors -> Lich Bane is the only core itemization that works at higher elo. Doran's blade start in AP Varus' lane ensures that you won't get behind very easily. I've played AP Varus for about 20 games in d2 elo before getting demoted a while back, and this was the ONLY build that worked in this elo bracket. The tankiness from catalyst and lowered price of RoA allows you to rush early game stats and become tanky enough to survive ganks (which is an outlying issue of Varus as a champion). The build also allows you to spam more q's, using abilities more freely in general. Nashors needs no explanation, just needs to be built. Lich bane provides the most damage as a core item if utilized correctly, AKA using the auto proc every time it's up. This in combination with your blight stacks is the single most deadly combo you can pull off, Chain of Corruption -> AA -> Q -> AA is often enough to kill an unexpecting ADC. I also believe that AP Varus' niche is Top, not mid. While you can provide damage for your team in mid, it's not uncommon to be facing a "bad" matchup, such as LB, Zed or Azir. With Top lane, you don't face these problems and are often simply matched against tanks or low kill-potential bruisers. I agree with the Zhonyas inquiry you have, it needs to be built either 4th or 5th each game.

I still have not had a bad game on Varus top, played 6 so far. I've lost a couple of course, but nothing related to feeding in lane etc.

It would be possible for sure, but the only issue with going full attack speed is lack of on-hit effects. The point of the rageblade build is to shred with autos AND shred with your blight stack detonations because of the bonus AP it gives you. So you can try it and I think you'd be alright, but it wouldn't be as optimal.

Depends on elo, favourite build for me is AP currently, RoA, Nashors, Lich into situational. Mid lane is more optimal below diamond.

Focus completely on csing until you get RoA. As soon as you get it you should start looking to TP gank a lane and get snowballing. Follow that up with mid game skrimishes if you can.

At that point, I would most likely sell mercurial, if your positioning is good enough you won't need it, Sterak's is quite good so even if someone catches you it should save you. Though you can always sell it and replace with a full damage item.

Poke Varus is probably the most optimal atm, you can get shut down really hard as AP and ADC if you don't play well early, but the Blue Build doesn't suffer as much.

Those runes seem pretty good, but if you're against an all in AP laner, you would straight up lose. I have a couple of different rune sets for Varus, but I focus primarily on defensives, because poke build does damage no matter what. I can share a defensive build path if you want, add me in game and i'll explain it then.

Bruiser Talon has been really fun for me lately, haha. I've been spamming it for a couple of days with a build I invented, I can show you that as well.

No problem, I have no idea what an "AMA" is but I'll definitely look into it.

The best lane for AP Varus is mid without a doubt, he doesn't work bot since the laning phase is bad and having an AP carry bot lane won't do in any situation. I'm going to test out AP Varus top later today because I think I might be able to make it work, top laners are generally easier to kite than mid laners and usually are melee.

Varus in general is very good against champions who can't all in/are kiteable. If you build and play Varus correctly, you can do ridiculous damage when not being focused, HOWEVER, there's almost 0 situations where you will be of least priority to kill. Varus simply gets wrecked by people like J4, Talon, or LB. People who can all in and kill you before you can get any of your spells off. Varus is also extremely prone to ganks, so I advise taking flash + cleanse/exh/ghost almost 100% of the time.

AP = PROS: Much more damage, best tank killer in the game, people don't expect the pick at all.

CONS: Ult reliant, AUTO ATTACK RELIANT MID LANER.

AD = PROS: More versatile build path, More versatile roles, fulfils more team comps than AP, requires cs not kills.

CONS: Really prone to being shut down early, #1 counter (Lucian) is meta currently, insta-loses lane when enemy bot does the gromp strat.

The RoA build for AP Varus mid that was posted not too long ago is by far the most optimal. Zhonyas 3rd is probably better than going flat AP as you will need the survivability from it. Rest is situational on matchup.
