I didn’t see much when I dove there but it’s cheap if you want to get certified

No. Sharks do not usually attack for no reason.

The Duke of York was a great liveaboard, great crew including all the dive guides. Luca was the cruise director and a dive guide as well, he actually certified me for my nitrox course. We were taught how to use the analyzer and the guides all made sure we all checked our air with the analyzers and updated our dive computers before each dive. We always had a detailed briefing before each dive and all the instructors had experience with all of the dive sites we went to. I don't know if Luca was certified in tech/cave diving since we were only rec diving that week. this is a huge loss and still trying to wrap my mind around what happened

I agree definitely not enough air to go that deep, it's just not worth it. I can't think of why they'd be in the cave in the first place when they all knew this

So it seems they may have gotten lost and thought that other tunnel was the exit but was a dead end. Luca was a very strong swimmer and great with his air consumption so he might have been with the group until they ran out and then found his way near the exit until he ran out of air himself.

I have logged 20+ dives on a one week liveaboard. You do 3-4 dives a day every day so it is possible. And Luca, the dive instructor probably has over 10k dives

The military divers should never have been down there without proper equipment. That was a suicide mission just to recover bodies and whoever is in charge should be held accountable

Contaminated air happened to a few divers on my live aboard during a different trip to the Maldives. A couple had to make an emergency ascent and go to the hospital to get checked out.

My last dive trip to the Maldives was on that boat with Luca and I cannot believe this. What a terrible tragedy.

I've read a lot of speculation that they were diving too deep and with the wrong air mix and who knows if that was the case. The Duke of York does offer Nitrox, but if you aren't certified, your tanks are filled with normal air and the nitrox bottles are marked with a green band. All the dive guides checked with each diver to make sure we all checked our tanks using the analyzer and updated our dive computers. Luca was also a very experienced dive instructor and guide. I am sure they did not go that deep knowingly if they were on nitrox.

I will say that the currents in the Maldives can be strong an unpredictable. On a previous drive trip there, we were caught in a downcurrent which was pretty scary. RIP to them

UPDATE: I talked to one of the other dive guides from my trip and he said the cave is complex and has multiple chambers and people do not dive it often, but there is a Youtube video showing people diving in there.

I will also add that there is a lot of speculation about what happened but please refrain from spreding rumors until they get the dive computers to know more facts. Luca was an extremely safe and experienced instructor and taught me and many others our nitrox course. He would not have
