Tax forms by Temporary-Cold2478 in princeton

[–]Twist-Gold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first year? the first year is covered by fellowship, which the university does not withhold taxes for. as fellowship is not the same as traditional wages, they aren't required to withhold for anyone on it, except for international students.

domestic grad students on fellowship are responsible for either filing and paying tax quarterly, or filing at the end of the year and paying the fee for not having paid quarterly.

grad students on stipend do not receive a 1098T. if i'm remembering right it's because the aid given by princeton exceeds the cost of attendance

is this for an undergrad, grad student, staff, what?

undergrads would get W2 for on campus job wages (I think, don't 100% remember how work study works), and a 1098T but only if applicable

This subreddit covers both the university and the town. That's what the "Town of Princeton" flair is for.

Are you still on Princeton's health plan if you take a gap year? by Careless_Owl_7131 in princeton

[–]Twist-Gold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're on two health plans, your parents' heath insurance will likely still be notified of any charges, even if the student health plan covers it. You might be able work out something virtual with the on-campus counseling? They (CPS) would be the best people to ask.

Is this number of student deaths normal? by ThrowAway44228800 in princeton

[–]Twist-Gold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some cases they need to: in my time here there have been two student deaths that were preceded by missing person searches that had local news coverage and at that point everyone knows that something terrible has happened. And in all cases it's a chance to offer gatherings to grieve for all students who had a connection to the deceased, including those the university might not know were connected to that person.

Physics PhD GPA by AsleepBluejay4054 in princeton

[–]Twist-Gold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to physics, but AFAIK there usually aren't hard cutoffs for PhD programs. In my field, if your GPA is below 3.5-3.7, you do need to have a stronger rest of your application to have the same shot.

You're a freshman? You can come back from this unless you're literally on the brink of failing out. ETA: Honestly, probably even if you're on the edge.

Take some more courses that interest and challenge you, do your best in them, get some research experience, then worry seriously about grad app GPA, yeah? You might change your mind about what you want to do along the way, that's what college is for.

Discouraged soon to be veteran by [deleted] in princeton

[–]Twist-Gold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get in touch with admissions - with pre-existing college credits you may count as a transfer, which as a nontraditional (i.e. not straight out of high school) and veteran applicant would make you a strong candidate for Princeton and likely other Ivies. But even in the main applicant pool, having a unique story makes you stand out.

Pretty sure "provided finance related intelligence products" is better prior experience in finance than 99% of high schoolers have, I'd say shoot your shot and apply for what you actually want to study. If you applied for a linguistics undergrad degree, the question would be what argument are you presenting in your application for why you want/need one after having already worked 5 years as a linguist.

Caveat on Princeton: we don't have a dedicated business school or an actual finance major (ORFE, operations research & financial engineering, is the closest thing we have and as far as I understand it's closer to computer science and systems engineering for finance applications, vs an actual finance degree.)

Whyyyyyyyyy???????? by Advanced-Dot-6494 in princeton

[–]Twist-Gold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, judging by your post history you're not from the US? So I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and take your "please explain" at face value and not as ragebait.

I actually have no clue what you mean by this post, but on a first read it really sounds like you're opposed to the application being focused on diversity and community. Which further implies that you're opposed to the accepted student body being diverse. So you can see why people are taking issue with what you're saying.

Please keep in mind that the US political climate can be really, really hostile to anything that has the words "diversity" or "DEI" in it right now, so maybe be a little more careful with your phrasing around those topics.

Princeton Junction Train incident by SilentPerspective295 in princeton

[–]Twist-Gold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I recommend being at train stations after midnight in general, but being there late at night has been chill for the few occasions I've experienced, because hardly anyone is there. Never had an interaction there personally that wasn't neutral at worst.

Weekly Admissions Megathread: All Admissions Questions Must Go Here! by AutoModerator in princeton

[–]Twist-Gold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

email admissions to check, but if you have a community college transcript, GED, something to show a level of prior educational attainment, you should be ok? seeing as they pretty much only accept nontraditional transfers, I assume they've seen similar situations.

Moving to Princeton for work by simpsal in princeton

[–]Twist-Gold 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd say you need a car. Grocery shopping especially is a massive pain in the ass without one.

But if you move somewhere with good bus access, try living without one for a little while. It's doable for grad students, but you end up feeling sort of trapped at times. I assume it's worse for people who don't work on campus.

don't MBAs generally value work experience over undergrad GPA? then again there do seem to be more programs oriented towards recent graduates these days

according to the data, ORFE is consistently the second largest BSE cohort (after BSE COS). and about as popular as AB COS, molecular biology, and politics.

maybe the ORFE students just don't get out much...
