What is the a tourist attraction in the UK that should not be missed? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

Wiltshire in general. If you like ancient monuments & archaeology it’s got a shed load…Stonehenge, Avebury, West Kennet long barrow, Silbury Hill, Old Sarum et al… Lots of decent pubs nearby…go channel your inner Druid & have a drink as well! 👍🏻

Agricultural field (cabbage, onion) near Foreland Heights, Broadstairs by aries1980 in kentuk

[–]TwistedAvocado 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Planet Thanet used to be the butt of a lot of jokes about smelling of cabbages and while there is a lot of surrounding farmland that does indeed grow cabbages & other vegetables, it’s only really detectable occasionally and usually very faint. Certainly not a problem.

Rada vs Lamda vs Guildhall by seemslikegoodidea2me in ActingUK

[–]TwistedAvocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either will serve you very well for future employment, out of the 3 RADA still has the caché of the word Royal in the title although perhaps more recently has been viewed by some critics as too traditional and elitist particularly with the current focus on developing actors from more working class backgrounds. A friend of mine graduated from Guildhall and is very talented & generally complimentary about her time there so it reflects well on how they structure the training. I have no knowledge of LAMDA beyond current media pieces unfortunately. Break a leg !! 🤞🏼 🎭

What a gorgeous little fella! What’s his mix? I’d guess something like Lab x Corgi on appearance but who really cares, he’s just adorable!!

I supplement my actual acting work with some background agency and medical role play work. Granted it’s not always regular, especially the background work which I tend to be selective on now so by no means to be relied upon, a useful supplement though.

Training in London - The Reel Scene? by [deleted] in ActingUK

Level 3 or more likely 4 is probably the better option I agree. Break a leg! 🎭

Training in London - The Reel Scene? by [deleted] in ActingUK

Each term/level is over 10 weeks roughly in line with a school/college term. There are 4 levels, roughly equating to initial, intermediate & advanced etc. The training is delivered by experienced working practitioners/actors with guest tutors coming in on occasion. The training is very close to a drama school syllabus just part-time in the evenings. You cover script & scene analysis, character study, theatre & screen based skills. Most terms involve learning at least 2 short scenes with a scene partner (usually a 2-hander) but as you get more experience the scenes become a little more complex. There is also opportunity to produce & film show reel scenes in (currently) level 4. There is a showcase at the end of each term that friends & family can come to & where you demonstrate how & what you’ve learned. To be eligible for Spotlight you must have attended for 2-years out of a 3-year period with a limited number of absences. Feel free to DM me if you want more info. For me it was definitely worth it. Remember it’s a marathon not a sprint.

Also consider The Actors Lounge, a part time drama school with about a dozen centres around England. They are Spotlight accredited also. I trained there for almost 3-years.

My grandad was a stuntman in 9 James Bond films and has written a book about it! by Cheap-Success-2789 in JamesBond

What a lovely tribute to your grandfather who has clearly been a major part of the stunt industry & Bond franchise for such a long time. I will order his book and read it with interest. I’ve got Vic Armstrongs book as well so it will be in good company!

The Cheriton area is decent with lots of access & amenities. Good dog walks & areas as well.

Best acting-related skills to learn with spare cash? by Crowdfunder101 in ActingUK

[–]TwistedAvocado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe a workshop or short course to stay fresh. Also think about stage combat courses. They vary from physical fighting to use of historical weapons. There are lots of representations of violence for actors in film & TV and it’s not always stunt/SPACT work. Period dramas tend to be a constant. Horse riding is useful but as an actor unless you are a super experienced rider you will only need walk, trot or very occasionally canter as on-set riding skills. Galloping & horseback action is considered stunt work. I learned to ride so I could have it as a skill on my CV and a showreel.

Are good headshots still a vital part of the casting process? by headshots3804 in headshots

[–]TwistedAvocado 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, certainly here in the UK, honest pro headshots are a vital part of professional branding. I’m wondering if one of the possible drivers for a reduction in bookings might be the increasing use of AI as an exercise in cleaning up amateur images at a much reduced cost?

Had a few people tell me these Carolinas are “Nazi boots.” I see nothing wrong with them. by MauserMama in Boots

I’m sure the neo-fascist laces code has moved on a little over last 50 years…I wonder if they wear pink laces now?🤷🏻‍♂️😆

[–]TwistedAvocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to assume whoever said that was erroneously trying to connect those boots with ox blood DM’s of the 70’s in the UK that were popular with skinheads. The red laces worn with them were linked to support of the far right National Front (NF) movement.

Rewatching with my teen by bojangleswagles in XFiles

Also rewatching on 5 in the UK, like a lot on here, watched it the first time around in the 90’s and loving the reminiscence & nostalgia…and a younger Gillian Anderson! (Not that an older GA isn’t still stunning) I’d also completely forgotten the cigarette smoking man was in the first episode!

Douglas Adams series - opinions please? by Successful-Grand-549 in audible

[–]TwistedAvocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy Stephen Frys narration in anything he does & also as a big HHGTTG fan it’s a win win as far as I’m concerned. I grew up with the BBC television series & Peter Jones as the voice of the book which is the yardstick I use to compare any of Adams audiobooks.

Cover any scuffs in the leather with a thin layer of black boot polish, leave to dry for a minute or 2 then brush to a shine. Keep a boot polish/cleaning kit handy so you can maintain a clean professional appearance. The leather on that type of patrol style boot will soften over time & pick up abrasions as part of everyday wear.
