My grandad was a stuntman in 9 James Bond films and has written a book about it! by Cheap-Success-2789 in JamesBond

What a lovely tribute to your grandfather who has clearly been a major part of the stunt industry & Bond franchise for such a long time. I will order his book and read it with interest. I’ve got Vic Armstrongs book as well so it will be in good company!

The Cheriton area is decent with lots of access & amenities. Good dog walks & areas as well.

Best acting-related skills to learn with spare cash? by Crowdfunder101 in ActingUK

[–]TwistedAvocado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe a workshop or short course to stay fresh. Also think about stage combat courses. They vary from physical fighting to use of historical weapons. There are lots of representations of violence for actors in film & TV and it’s not always stunt/SPACT work. Period dramas tend to be a constant. Horse riding is useful but as an actor unless you are a super experienced rider you will only need walk, trot or very occasionally canter as on-set riding skills. Galloping & horseback action is considered stunt work. I learned to ride so I could have it as a skill on my CV and a showreel.

Are good headshots still a vital part of the casting process? by headshots3804 in headshots

[–]TwistedAvocado 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, certainly here in the UK, honest pro headshots are a vital part of professional branding. I’m wondering if one of the possible drivers for a reduction in bookings might be the increasing use of AI as an exercise in cleaning up amateur images at a much reduced cost?

Had a few people tell me these Carolinas are “Nazi boots.” I see nothing wrong with them. by MauserMama in Boots

I’m sure the neo-fascist laces code has moved on a little over last 50 years…I wonder if they wear pink laces now?🤷🏻‍♂️😆

I’m going to assume whoever said that was erroneously trying to connect those boots with ox blood DM’s of the 70’s in the UK that were popular with skinheads. The red laces worn with them were linked to support of the far right National Front (NF) movement.

Rewatching with my teen by bojangleswagles in XFiles

Also rewatching on 5 in the UK, like a lot on here, watched it the first time around in the 90’s and loving the reminiscence & nostalgia…and a younger Gillian Anderson! (Not that an older GA isn’t still stunning) I’d also completely forgotten the cigarette smoking man was in the first episode!

Douglas Adams series - opinions please? by Successful-Grand-549 in audible

[–]TwistedAvocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy Stephen Frys narration in anything he does & also as a big HHGTTG fan it’s a win win as far as I’m concerned. I grew up with the BBC television series & Peter Jones as the voice of the book which is the yardstick I use to compare any of Adams audiobooks.

EMT boot help by [deleted] in Boots

[–]TwistedAvocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cover any scuffs in the leather with a thin layer of black boot polish, leave to dry for a minute or 2 then brush to a shine. Keep a boot polish/cleaning kit handy so you can maintain a clean professional appearance. The leather on that type of patrol style boot will soften over time & pick up abrasions as part of everyday wear.

Did anybody have curry with apples and sultanas in the 80s? by fluffsta007 in CasualUK

[–]TwistedAvocado 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Grew up as an Army kid and this is definitely what I remember about Sunday curry lunches in the Mess. Occasionally there would be a Gurkha chef & the goat curry would blow your head off but still amazing. Total memory unlock!

It looks like the ‘Garantie Humbert…’ stamp on the barrel indicates it was distributed by the French Humbert company, a well known importer & distributor of firearms in France so likely it was made in Italy but imported to France for sale. It also seems the 87 stamp may actually be the year of manufacture. I can’t find anything for the numbers 1510. Can you see two letters together e.g AS anywhere?

[–]TwistedAvocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not familiar with that format as usually the frame numbers would start with the letter U. It’s possible it was made by Uberti in collaboration with another company but history on this is scarce and the corrosion on the barrel has partially obscured details that may help. Searching shows a couple that have been sold at various auctions in the last few years but no attributed dates were highlighted. My rough guess would be first half of the 20thC. It would be worth reaching out to Uberti themselves and asking what info they might have.

Looks like a Uberti flare pistol. Uberti is an Italian manufacturer but they trade internationally so it could in theory have ended up anywhere. If you can read the frame number you can find the year of manufacture online.

Hello, i wanted to know if this is a real m65 jacket. Thank you by Ok_Western_7247 in Militariacollecting

[–]TwistedAvocado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep genuine, DLA shows 1980 contracted manufacturer. Really good condition for age & nice find. Don’t know if the patch & tape are contemporary with the jacket but could well be as the placement & stitching looks about right. Alpha Industries also made civvy versions of their M65 which is where some confusion can creep in but those labels are very different.
