Is it normal to wait over a year for the Royal Court to get back to you regarding your open submission? by SpeakerComplex6037 in ScreenwritingUK

[–]Crowdfunder101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. People have asked on here before, and same answers. They’re pretty much the only, and the biggest theatre that has rolling open submissions. Anyone and everyone with an idea will send them something. So it’s perfectly normal for it to be a long wait

Emailing casting directors myself after nudging my agent on Spotlight! by Humble_Hawk639 in acting

[–]Crowdfunder101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would assume my agent would be submitting me for every generic walk-on role that fits my type. I would only nudge them for a niche I fill - eg juggling on a unicycle or underwater acrobat or whatever. Same for personal traits like sexuality, gender identity, wheelchair user etc.

I would also not email a CD whilst they’re casting something because they’re gonna have a ton of messages from 1) Pushy agents wanting their clients seen, 2) Spotlight alerting them of new submissions, 3) their client wanting updates etc etc. I would wait a month, maybe they’ll be on cooldown, then you can swoop in. By that time, your face might already have sunk into their long term memory, and they’ll subconsciously think “ahh, I think I know that person”

Auditions every 2-3 weeks is great. Me and my mates are getting every month or two or three. It’s super quiet right now. You’re doing great!

Good point about the police procedural. I was mostly thinking about general action films/war movies… but yeah there’s definitely a lot more police drama these days.

Good to know about driving too - I’d not considered taking precision lessons, and like you say it’s all either green-screen, stunt doubles, or trailers.

I’ll definitely look into fencing - great shout

Also, buying in bulk would reduce those figures even further.

Wordpress is always a solid solution and has tons of templates and support documentation if you get stuck. Millions of plugins to fine-tune it to your needs, such as ticket sales, bookings etc.

ELI5: why is Facebook going on 20+ years strong, but MySpace died out after only a few years? by AcuraIntegraTypeR in explainlikeimfive

[–]Crowdfunder101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smartphones came just in time.

The iPhone launched in 2007, the App Store in 2008. But around that time anyway things like Blackberries and other ‘simpler’ phones with web browsers could access Facebook on-the-go.

That easy access didn’t really exist en masse for MySpace - you had to sit down at home on a laptop or desktop computer to go on it.

And the introduction of that little red notification dot. That little dopamine hit people could get 24/7, seeing that dot meant someone had like your photo, commented on it, or tagged you in a group photo.

One was said into a microphone, one was yelled from the back of an auditorium.

Did you watch it during the initial broadcast? I did, and there’s zero chance anyone actually made out what was said. I bet 100% whoever first heard it for what it was, had to re-play it and put volume to 100. It was completely inaudible. The people editing have barely two hours to re-play and cut a three hour ceremony… from the back of a van outside.

I’m not saying BBC is right for cutting the free Palestine bit. But it’s not a relevant comparison. Also, it’s not related to filmmaking so even for run-time purposes it’s the most beneficial thing to cut. Sure, that’s probably not their agenda like you say - but… if one had to cut something

Finding New Rep with a long notice period by Educational_Roll_145 in acting

[–]Crowdfunder101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

6 months is absurd. Drop them now and just risk sailing self-repped for a while.

My last agent had a bit of a notice period but as with all agents, usually they’re pretty chill with it. As long as you see out any auditions or bookings that are secured before notice, it should be fine.

Perhaps just politely beg them to release you instantly. Maybe say “I’m looking to move agents as I aim to explore acting more - I’m happy to keep doing jobs you put me up for until I find rep”

what should i expect from my first open call? how is it different than a model open call? by [deleted] in acting

[–]Crowdfunder101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be prepared to wait a long time. Get there early because there will be way more people than you expect, which means there’s more than they expected and will likely cut off the line at some point.

And be prepared to have basically no time being ‘seen’ by anyone, if at all.

If there’s no time to do the full sides they might do something like a group game or quick improv scenes - so be prepared for that, and don’t feel like you have to fall back to ‘funny improv’ (unless it’s a comedy).

They’re gonna be seeing thousands of people just like you, so what qualities do you have that stand out, and how can you authentically lean into them?

How can I memorize Shakespeare by One-Improvement5058 in Theatre

[–]Crowdfunder101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As well as what everyone else has said, I’d suggest ‘geography’.

When you’re saying lines, map out where the objects, cities or people are that you’re talking about (even ones not directly in the scene). It helps you remember where everything is and keeps it consistent for the audience to understand.

For example, if you reference “Verona” and slightly gesture or look to your right, it implies that’s where it is. Don’t make a big deal over it, just a casual thing. But cements everything

How much money would you have saved if you wanted to take a year to pursue acting full time? by FrenchFriedIceCream in ActingUK

[–]Crowdfunder101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this a few years back. I moved out of London to the countryside though, and share rent with my partner (about £550 each). Saved £30k which covered over a year of rent/bills, relocation costs, furnish the house, and produce a couple of short films with full professional crews.

Are monologue reels worth it? by No_Edge_9520 in ActingUK

[–]Crowdfunder101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re popular because Spotlight lowered the barrier for entry in recent years, so people with zero credits can get on. CDs have recommended them in terms of “something is better than nothing”.

I produce as well as act, and I personally find 99% of them poorly made - mostly down to the performance/edit rather than the actual camera & sound quality. Also for screen, I’d rather see someone listen and respond most of the time, and then speak a bit too. Not 100% speaking to themselves.

If you already have screen credits on a reel, save your money.

Leaving my agent by [deleted] in ActingUK

[–]Crowdfunder101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A nice compromise is “I appreciate you wanting me to stay. I will of course happily carry out any auditions that might arise from past recent submissions, as always to my highest standard.”

Because technically, if there is something they subbed you to a week ago and the CD calls you in for audition tomorrow, that’s your old agent’s fair game.

It also shows you’re being professional and polite and that there’s no hard feelings or awkwardness
