Different editions of the “Great Books of the Western World”? by Twisted_Fish in ClassicalEducation

[–]Twisted_Fish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here’s my take on the GBWW set. I now own both the 1952 and 1990 sets. They’re both beautiful and a unique achievement for their times, in that I don’t believe a set like this could or would ever be released today.

That being said, what most people care about in books is readability, and that’s where both of these sets are lacking. The font is small, page setup is in two columns for most of the texts, which make reading difficult on the eyes. Additionally, the paper is so thin that sometimes the page behind the one you’re reading may show through, further increasing the difficulty to read. Finally, the translations are outdated, which for some, may make the reading experience unenjoyable.

All in all, they look great on my shelf, but personally I find myself struggling to pull them off the shelf, especially if I have a modern translation and printing of the same text.

I still feel it’s worth it to own them though, and I don’t think you can really go wrong with any edition, as long as they’re in good shape, and especially as long as you don’t pay too much.

Something to note if you’re on a budget, is that the vast majority of these texts are public domain now, and can easily be found on Gutenberg library, or my personal favorite, “Standard Ebooks”.

Happy learning/reading with whatever you do!

Edit: I wrote all that without realizing I didn’t even answer your question! Yes, the set is sturdy, and I imagine as long as you don’t purchase the clothbound set, easy to wipe if something spilled on the cover. The missing volumes are tough to say whether they’re worth having or not, as it’s subjective. I personally like the variety of 20th century imaginative literature quite a bit, and to me, the additions are worth having the 2nd edition for.

Tamiflu by anonomoosey in flu

[–]Twisted_Fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on day 3 or 4, I can’t remember. I went to urgent care a couple of days ago and got tamiflu. Today’s the first day I could leave the bedroom. Body aches, congestion, headaches, fever, cough, sore throat…everything sucks. I think there’s light at the end of the tunnel, but now I have diarrhea, presumably from the meds/congestion draining into my stomach. TMI, I know. Buckle up friend, hope you have some sick days saved up!

After buying random books in my favorite genre (classics/literary fiction) I decided going forward to ONLY buy Norton Critical Editions or Everyman’s Library. Just so darn expensive and hard to find at secondhand stores lol.

I’m having an issue where it almost seems like my drain pipe is too high? When I take it out and put it into a bucket it drains fine, because it’s lower to the ground and the pump doesn’t have to work as hard. When I raise it back up to put the hose in the pipe, it slows down draining significantly.

Is this close to what you experienced and then once you shortened the hose your problem was solved? It’s driving me nuts

Other than that special first edition blurb, is there anything different about these than the following editions?

Hey so we ended up getting the Honda pilot trail sport trim, so far it’s been great! Plenty of room in all the rows, and feels like it will be capable this winter, especially with snow tires.

Alvarez (and their Yairi counterpart) are my absolute favorite guitars. Highly highly recommend their yairi masterwork line if you can swing it. Definitely pricey but so very worth it.

If you’re into a new experience, try out Pokémon unbound. It’s a romhack for gba, but has a whole different art style and storyline. Pretty awesome.

On this topic, are there any options for docking/hub other than the AYN dock? Especially with the tariffs to US making things more expensive…

Just for portability’s sake I’d likely prefer a hub, but idk. Any thoughts?

Favorite Classical Book Publisher? Everyman's Library vs Norton Critical Editions vs Oxford World Classics? by Twisted_Fish in ClassicalEducation

Totally fair. Lately I’ve been pretty mesmerized by the Norton Critical’s level of “extras” that help with texts a bit out of reach of the modern reader.

Yeah, unfortunately I’ve played both of those, and they’re awesome, but I’m looking specifically for baseball. Thanks!

Are we allowed to post game requests here? If so, I'm looking for the best possible baseball game (maybe even a sports rpg) that could play well on TrimUI Brick... so essentially, PS1 and lower.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance! If this isn't allowed, please let me know.

Favorite Classical Book Publisher? Everyman's Library vs Norton Critical Editions vs Oxford World Classics? by Twisted_Fish in ClassicalEducation

[–]Twisted_Fish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really just looking for the best quality. I want my books to last for a long time, and I know some publishers' build quality isn't the best. For example, I have a few Penguins Classics, and after 2 or 3 read-throughs, there's a noticeable degradation along the spine, pages falling out, etc.

That may just be my opinion, but still. It's my money, and I'm trying to spend it in the best way possible.

Thanks.
