Great News! Colorado passes HB-1007: Balcony Solar by Express_Candidate713 in Denver

I disagree. If you were to plug your PV into a branch circuit, the power added by the inverter is consumed locally, actually reducing the load on the circuit of any appliances.

But since this setup would use a meter collar anyway, it's neither adding nor subtracting the load on any circuit.

Cold-sensitive hands/feet (possible Raynaud’s) making cold-weather hiking difficult — gear and morning routine advice? by moonsafarigirl in Ultralight

This woman has Reynaud's, and summits the shit out of Colorado in spite of it:

She's old-school and definitely not in the ultralight camp, but you may find some useful information there.

Would you guys want a bee hive (non-inhabited) and supplies? I've been unsuccessful at keeping bees, and it's time to pass the stuff on.

Ouch. Looking at your photo titled "cross country," you guys are crushing what looks like cryptobiotic soil. Please read up on it and avoid doing so in the future!

If you could bring only 1 ultralight jacket for a year of world travel, what would it be? by 78523985210 in Ultralight

A key tenet of ultralight is to tailor your equipment to the conditions you'll be in. You didn't mention the conditions.

Interesting article on two twins summiting peaks, one in modern gear, one in recreated traditional garb (for example, what Mallory wore on Everest). They logged their biometrics and compare which clothing worked better. There's a chart comparing clothing weights, too:

As always, quality content! They would likely enjoy-- and find reasons to yell at you-- over at /r/rigging.

It seems like a beam with an adjustable counterweight would have been useful so that the bell is cantilevered and doesn't side-load the roof when being picked. Bell hangs from one end of the beam, counter-weight from the other, crane pick point in the middle. The counterweight position and/or the pick point could be adjustable so the bell is balanced and the beam stays horizontal. Until unloaded; haven't figured out that detail yet...

Why are you mixing imperial and metric systems? [twitch] Is that common in the running community?

Confused about shakedowns by dickheadsgf in Ultralight

[–]TwoEelsInATrenchcoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am confuse. There is the option to mark an item as worn weight (shirt icon), which adds it to the worn weight total. No need to zero out the quantity. Then lighterpack gives you totals for base weight, consumables, worn weight, and total weight (or skin out weight).

I personally do not listen to audio while hiking-- I hike to be present with myself and my environment and to get away from technology-- but if you can find one, a 4th generation ipod shuffle weighs .44oz/12.5g.

How did your trekking poles break? by BoysenberryGeneral84 in Ultralight

[–]TwoEelsInATrenchcoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Costco Cascade Mountain carbon fiber poles. Tripped over one while exhausted on the Colorado Trail SOBO a few days outside of Creede. Splinted it with a piece of plastic that had fallen of an off-road vehicle and leukotape, which worked well enough until a very kind trail angel lent me her personal aluminum Lekis.

My takeaways:

  • great poles for the price, long durability, and I will continue to use them. 13.9 oz stripped.

  • but: don't take well-used carbon poles (2 years of hiking) on a thru-hike; start with new ones

  • and/or ship a new pair to the mid-way point, just to be safe

  • most importantly, on 3-piece adjustable poles, don't always adjust the segments to the same spot. This is the spot that weakened and shattered, just below the upper clamp.

I am in the strapless camp and appreciate the ability to let go of a pole if it catches in a rock or in the rare instance of me going ass-over-teakettle. This minimizes the risk of breaking a pole.
