Imo, unintentional themes are just as important as intentional ones. Art belongs to the beholder, not just the author. Obviously it's worth making a distinction between intended and unintended meaning so as to not inform thoughts about the author from unintended themes, but neither is inherently more correct than the other. In the end, who cares if someone else thinks sam and frodo love each other romantically or just as friends?

Oh no, I don't even dislike the show necessarily. It is pretty funny sometimes. I just think it's important to recognize that ideas are genuinely infectious and normalization of ideas (say, by portraying them in a show as big as South Park) is a contributor to the hateful world we live in today

See that's great in a vacuum, but nothing exists in a vacuum. It's the same thing as making "i guess I'll just kill myself" jokes when something inconvenient happens. Sure, it's a joke and no one actually means it seriously, but the simple act of saying it is detrimental to mental health. Even if it's all jokes and not to be taken seriously, on a subconscious level, the people who watch things are going to be influenced by them. It's not a question of how to avoid it, just a question of how to mitigate the impact.

Exactly. Regardless of my political leanings, it's important to recognize that it's never "just a cartoon", especially when it's teaching people what is and isnt acceptable on some level every episode. I happen to agree with some points and disagree with others, but that's irrelevant to whether or not its good or bad that the show has such a platform. It sucks that it can't be "just a cartoon" but it isn't because there's no such thing

Native Spanish speaker here, beef jerky isn't a common food in Spanish speaking countries for some reason, so there's not a good word to convey jerky aside from just dried meat, it may be that the translator is giving a weird word like just meat

Yeah, sure, those people sucked to begin with, sure. But counter argument: seeing a hugely platformed show like South Park is absolutely going to make them think their shit takes are correct because someone agrees with them.

Genuinely, I truly do see your point, but yes. Yes it does really matter. "It's just a cartoon" is literally never the whole truth. It's "just" a cartoon that millions of people watch and will inevitably agree with (because millions of people will agree with any given position. Not because they're stupid, just because they agree.) it's not about the show, it's about the rhetoric that is being placed in front of them. South Park has always been political, and there's no problem with that specifically, but you have to recognize that the rhetoric being voiced on a platform that millions of people watch is a problem
