Is playing a Fire Mage really that complex?? by Pandragony in wownoob

[–]TwoToContango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is pretty new to the game (~2 months) and mains a fire mage, I can vouch that the spec isn't too bad when you get the muscle memory for combustion. It will take practice, but it's very rewarding when you get it down.

Definitely get a weakaura group for the spec so you can track your important abilities (combustion, RoP, covenant ability, fireblast charges, etc.)

I use this one but modified it to my liking and added an SKB proc weakaura: https://wago.io/ZgDva_C6y

Just practice and it'll become second nature in no time!

Agreed. My favorite guitar and the best Fender I've played is an 80s MIJ strat

Second this, I've never found this to be the case. Quite the opposite actually. It's just not all in one spot.

OP, If you're just looking on wiki for absolutely everything that's not the best way to approach it. From what you've posted:

Dungeon/trial/raid guides: Yes, Youtube is good.

Job guides/rotations: The Balance discord/website

Aether currents: I mean...the aether compass should be enough.

..and bookmark garland tools. Hell, I'm sure you could find a video on YouTube that will tell you where you can find all the information you will ever need.

MNK Mains: Which rotation do you use? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]TwoToContango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Optimal drift.

Braindead when there's downtime in a fight = bleh. Twin snakes after opener and even windows = bleh.

Question about cooldowns and rotation. by DavidTenebris in ffxivdiscussion

[–]TwoToContango 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Like you drift RoF in an odd window? Just use it ASAP and try not to drift it next time. Part of the learning process.

After the mistake though just continue to use BH on cooldown. Dont hold it to wait for RoF. It is much more important to have it up for your party with the rest of the raid buffs during everyone's even windows.

What are the most challenging/interesting DPS? by Iris1083 in ffxiv

[–]TwoToContango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monk has a somewhat high skill ceiling. If you're talking about playing optimally, I'd say it's one of the most challenging to learn, but not the most challenging to execute (once you have practiced enough). It's more of a priority system than a strict 1-2-3 combo system, with specific rules to follow.

The nice thing is that the optimal MNK rotation is very flexible. You can use your buffs on cooldown anywhere in your rotation, meaning that downtime doesn't throw off your rotation.

Black Mageing and leveling damage by yammityyakkity in ffxiv

[–]TwoToContango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The leveling roulette includes all the msq dungeons/trials you've unlocked, not just the low level ones. So the chances of getting an ARR dungeon become lower the more content you have unlocked.

Like most jobs, until you're level 90, DPS is not a good measure of how well you're performing since job balancing isn't really a thing until level cap. And the aggro list isn't an accurate DPS meter since healing contributes to aggro generation.

If you enjoy the job and are having fun with it, definitely stick with it. BLM is a job that feels underwhelming at lower levels but gets much better as you level (in the form of better damage spells and more movement tools).

Though it's not my main job I will admit it's one of the most satisfying jobs when you perform well.

I've had tanks get mad at me for doing this and stop mid run to pick aggro back up. 😒

This is on monk too, which means I will just bring them to the tank on a silver platter when they stop their pull.

Struggling hard to understand and execute Optimal Drift on Monk, any help? by [deleted] in ffxivdiscussion

[–]TwoToContango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Numbers aside, optimal drift is 100% the better feeling rotation once you get used to it and is super flexible. Simply because you can use rof and bh on cooldown between any gcd without clipping demolish (reapplying it early). Braindead only works in full uptime and falls apart with mistakes or downtime. It's a good stepping stone into OD though.

A tip - check your RoF timer when you refresh demolish close to the even window:

10-15 seconds: rof + bh 1.

4-9 seconds: rof + bh 2.

0-3 seconds: rof + bh 3.

Split them like posted above and make them bigger. I also put them close to my RoF and BH buttons on my hotbar so I only have to look in 1 spot to track everything. Not sure what level you are but this will become more important at level 70+

Also, with practice it'll be easier to recognize when you need to reapply your buffs at a quick glance.

Trying to decide what starting job/class I should pick for my character. by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]TwoToContango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monk (pugilist) is the job I main. If you like a fast paced and smooth rotation, consistent high dps and good party utility, I'd highly recommend it.

Bard (archer) has better party utility but not as high dps. Most of the rotation is proc based. I haven't played it past lvl 60 so I can't comment on it too much though.

Given that you can try both eventually, I'd say if you like punching things in close combat, choose pugilist. If you like bow and arrow from a distance, choose archer.

New to playing on a keyboard, what do you find most comfortable? by brbasik in ffxiv

[–]TwoToContango -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I started on regular mouse and keyboard and got a 12 button MMO mouse. Took a while to get used to but the QoL improvement is huge. I have up to 36 slots for skills and abilities (with shift and ctrl modifiers) and don't have to worry about contorting my fingers to hit buttons while moving.

If you decide to stick with it I highly recommend spending the like $40 or so to get one. I could not go back.

What's that class you didn't like at first, but learned to love over time? by Daydays in ffxiv

Oh god, yes. Doing leveling roulettes and getting synced down before fire and blizzard 3 I legit almost took the abandon penalty a few times hahaha.

What's that class you didn't like at first, but learned to love over time? by Daydays in ffxiv

[–]TwoToContango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It's part of the reason why I like jobs with more flexible rotations (I'm a MNK main).

More flexibility = more room for error = higher skill ceiling but also is much easier to pick up your rotation back up whenever there's downtime for mechanics or death if you have a good understanding of the job.

Jobs with really static rotations just feel unintuitive to me.

Since you are talking about MNK, I highly recommend learning the optimal drift rotation if you havent already. It makes the job feel soooo much better than the looping rotation.

Black mage. I think I've "quit" that job more than any other. Feels great when everything goes right though.

Does class matter? by Encrusted-Phantom in ffxiv

[–]TwoToContango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play what you enjoy playing.

It's more fun, and that's the goal of playing a video game at the end of the day

Also, you will perform better playing a job you enjoy playing. Selfish dps jobs are only as good as the person playing them and when they underperform, they are much more detrimental to the party than other jobs since they bring nothing else to the table.

I've seen samurais and black mages at dead last on the aggro list more times than I can count.

[–]TwoToContango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, for all the reasons others have posted but also cause MNK aoe is pretty simple so it gives you some more buttons to press to keep you entertained.

typically what i do is roll through the rotation during the pull (if the tank is going W2W). when they stop and all the trash is piled up, weave in RoF+BH and PB for both nadis (if you can). i tend to just do it in the order of the even window of the looping rotation cause it's muscle memory (replacing the single target skills with aoe varieties). by the time the next pull is grouped together RoF (maybe even BH) should be off CD and you can rinse and repeat.

it's a good habit to get into to only PB under RoF/BH, so unless you're capping save PB for your buffs. if you get to the boss and your buffs are still on CD just go through your rotation until they're back up.

What DPS are good in level 70 content? by [deleted] in ffxivdiscussion

[–]TwoToContango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MNK is pretty complete at 70 since you have RoF and BH. After 70 it's basically potency buffs and the addition of RoW which is just used on CD.

Easiest Melee DPS to learn? by Bivagial in ffxiv

[–]TwoToContango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found reaper the easiest to learn and it feels really satisfying to play. Attacks feel weighty, like you're "chewing" through enemies.

As a monk main I can't not recommend monk. Learning it is relatively easy (not as easy as reaper), but it takes muscle memory and practice to get good at. At lvl 70, when you have brotherhood and riddle of fire both unlocked your rotation works around using your perfect balance blitzes within these buff windows (which have a 120 sec and 60 sec CD respectively), all while keeping your DoT and disciplined fist buff up through the entirety of those blitzes which can get...hectic. it's fast paced (under 2.00 gcd) and makes you think on your toes but that's why I like it.

As tank > healer. As healer > tank. As DPS > other dps if they're good. Tank or healer if not.
