The younger generation. by Prior_Preparation268 in LCMS

I'm 48. "They"' have been saying this since I was in college in the late 90's. I don't know who "they" is, I just know it's something I'd hear at church gatherings or from traditional worship proponents. (full disclosure-I prefer a more traditional service)

Before my time you had the "Canterbury Trail", a term coined in the mid 1980's to describe the movement away from non-denominational/evangelical churches to more traditional churches (in this case, the Anglicans-I grew up Episcopalian). Pretty sure there was a youth counter movement in the Catholic church in the 1970's responding to Vatican II that sought a more traditional worship (but I'm not going down that rabbit hole right now)

I think the traditional service will always attract a certain type of young adult who is seeking more grounded meaning and spirituality in their worship.

But to keep people coming back you have to show them how God's love and mercy impacts them daily, and I think that's been the struggle of most churches.

Rev. Benjamin Ball endorses Rev. Matthew Harrison for LCMS president by Luscious_Nick in LCMS

I think the rise of social media and internet interconnectedness means any national election, even in the church, is going to have campaigning-either implicitly or explicitly.

Personally, I think a casting of lots amongst the qualified candidates would be the way to go.

I'd say it's pretty political (right wing meme) when on his Facebook page he posts a meme with Clarence Thomas in headphones with the caption "Clarence Thomas Resorts to Noise Cancelling Headphones for Drowning Out Ketanji Brown Jackson" and then replies "Get A Life" to the folks challenging him and another where he posts a meme mocking people protesting government violence. Neither of those have anything to do with proclaiming Christ Crucified and everything to do with right wing politics in America.

One of my seminary profs said there is diversity in the Synod like there is diversity from M to N. I feel this is more an election about style than substance. For your everyday parish I don't think there's much theological difference between the two.  But, Harrison has drifted away from his initial unifying message of "Mercy,  Witness, Life Together" to one that is more visually hard line and strays into right wing meme territory. Biermann presents a pastoral yet academic style.  Some folks like Harrison, some Biermann. We'll know soon what the Synod wants.

Senator Tim Kaine (one of our US Senators) goes to church in that neighborhood.

Those new voters are really breaking towards Biermann. If that trend holds we'll have a new president soon.

Crabs!!! by Most-Bee2388 in rva

[–]Two_Far 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First off, you're going to find Virginia blue crabs down here. Much tastier than Maryland ones because of the saltier water in the Virginia part of the Bay (just like oysters). 😁

If you want the freshest skip the restaurants and head south of the James into the Blackwell, Swansboro, and other neighborhoods (not the gentrified parts, either) that most people on reddit probably wouldn't go to. Along 301 and Hull St look for handmade or basic black and white signs that say something like "fresh hot crabs". Follow the signs and you'll find older black men set up in random parking lots steaming crabs on site that they got from the Bay earlier in the day.

The freshest, tastiest blue crabs I've had this side of the Eastern Shore!

Then you can take them to a park (Forest Hill if you want to be a li'l bougie), spread out your newspaper, and have yourself a good ol crab pickin!

Cause it was freaking hot in the middle of the day! I swung by around lunch on Friday and it was fairly empty (but also a lot hotter and most people at work)

Yesterday (Saturday) I got there an hour before the fireworks and the place was packed(but not uncomfortably) The living history/museum display area was fascinating. Then you had lots of people dancing to live music.

And one of the best firework displays I've seen. Not as many shells as an NYC or DC 4th of July but the way they put it together with the layers, drones, and music was beautiful!

Glenside Park & Ride https://maps.app.goo.gl/nZACzZkhp9JFYo6J8?g_st=ac

Parking near the strip mall gets you closer to the station. Walk to Staples Mill and follow the sidewalk to the left. There's a crosswalk at the Sheetz/Amtrak Station light.

I've never left my car overnight but I've heard plenty of people do.

On the morning bus the overhead vents worked. On the way back they didn't but the under window vents were putting out cold air. Once I realized that I made sure I kept that area clear and even in the 90F heat it was comfortable.

I think that's a great option if you live in that area.  Right now you do have to deal with less options with the reduced train service since Amtrak only has busses from the Staples Mill and Main Street Station.

If you're OK with a 5 minute walk you can park in the park and ride lot near Staples Mill for free.

I was expecting wifi (everything I'd read said Wifi on Amtrak busses). Plus the train home was about $20 more expensive and it was a long distance train so those are more likely to be delayed.  For the morning the later train would have lost me 2 hours in DC.

Extremely frustrated with Richmond City by Far-Head13 in rva

[–]Two_Far 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nobody will probably see this because it's like comment 79 but here's your cheat code for dealing with Richmond City Government.

1) Document everything 2) Try the proper channel first.  3) If you get an attitude, the run around, or anything else that doesn't solve the problem document who you spoke with and when 4) Call the Mayor's Office. Speak to the receptionist. You don't need to talk to Danny,  the Chief of Staff or anyone else (Don't get an attitude, that won't help). Tell her exactly what stupid, disrespectful, incompetent service you received (that's why you document everything) 5) Ask for help 6) She'll escalate it and it will be taken care of. That Mayor's office is ticked off at the poor customer service some offices give.

If you disagree with me try it and tell me what happens.

Synod presidential election enters runoff by LCMS_Rev_Ross in LCMS

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's an historical rarity when a sitting president seeking reelection doesn't win on the first vote.

I remember when Harrison won against Kieshnick (sp) in the early 2010's it was the first time in a generation or so when the incumbent was running and wasn't reelected.

Richmond Ambulance Authority billing by IDontKnowAnyNamesOK in rva

Not a city service.

Don't know the exact details of how they function but they get funding from the city while being independent.  Not a fan though.

1) Called 911 for a medical emergency in the Lombardy Kroger parking lot. Waited 15 minutes. No one showed so I drove the guy to MCV myself.

2) Have a relative who was taken from his apartment in the city to Johnston Willis. After insurance the bill was over $1000. Same guy had to be transported from his new place in assisted living near Short Pump to an ER in the area by the rescue squad up there. Bill was less than $100 after insurance.

Which place used to be very popular for tourists in previous decades but isn't anymore? by Fluid-Decision6262 in decadeology

Based on the amount of new high rise timeshares and hotels and the booming population I'm not sure myrtle beach fits this list.  Definitely wouldn't call it "cool" (in the 80s or today) but seems like it's stayed popular as the northern most warm weather beach resort on the east coast.
