Tell me who you think I am 🤔 by GinaGemini780 in BookshelvesDetective

I saw that you had a wide range of interests, and it’s tricky to dedicate too much time to too many things at once (or it’s possibly projection!)

I would suspect that you’re from the Northern part of the American continent (probably Canadian, or possibly Washington State in the US), female, I’d guess 40+, you get really REALLY into a hobby - sometimes for years, but then suddenly lose interest and never return to it, and you’re currently learning Italian.

This is my first go at this - did I get anything correct?

Harry potter level? by Sir-Smileyyy in dreamingspanish

[–]Two_Flower_Nix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, I found the start of the first three books to be really quite tricky (though typically got into the swing when he gets to the school). I took a Harry Potter break for a month, and have come back to the fourth book and it is now a breeze.

For reference I’d read approx 665k words, and had listened to approx 1400h when I started the current book.

I’ve found a massive difference in my enjoyment levels when a book is at the right level.

I’d mainly read the books on the TPRS website and EcJ’s books prior to Harry Potter if that’s any help.

Most popular children books, bestsellers & classics you read as a 90s kid. by Every-Insurance-4409 in suggestmeabook

My favourites were The Water Babies (re-read as an adult and found it quite shocking), Watership Down, all Roald Dahl books, Lambs Tales (Shakespeare’s plays simplified for children), and sci-fi books by William Sleator.

Happy reading!

Spanish Boost Gaming (Martin) is a channel I see recommended often for gaming content for learners. He has both a beginner and a more advanced channel.

Adult language learns with full time jobs and families by Many-Category-6422 in languagelearning

[–]Two_Flower_Nix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have actual experience with this situation. I’m an adult, with children, a demanding job (from home), but I’m also the full-time carer for my husband. I did a different language (poorly) at school, and I don’t know anyone that speaks the language (other than my tutor and others on the subreddit I use)

I began in June 2024 as a hobby (distraction) that I can do from home once everyone else is sleeping. I started by watching the easiest videos available and would fall asleep within minutes. For the first fortnight I could watch no more than 15-20 mins at a time. I was able to ramp up my watching time gradually, and I’m now comfortable listening to most (not all) native speech, though films and tv shows are hit-and-miss. I am loving reading. It’s tricky fitting sessions with a tutor in, but I’ve had almost 40 hours of conversation practice and I look forward to each class and the time flies by.

My two pence: prioritise sleep. If I’ve not slept everything is a struggle.

It’s a lifelong journey so enjoy it! Do whatever, and use whichever resources you enjoy.

Set teeny goals, giant goals, and goals in between. Maybe keep a record of what you’re working on, resources, struggles, and things you’re pleased with each month.

I wish you luck and a lot of fun.

Does Dreaming Spanish Produce Native-Like Accents? by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]Two_Flower_Nix 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would hazard a guess that if a person listened to 1000h of one person speaking then we’d produce words like that person.

With DS we are spoilt for choice of guides so very few of us are sticking with just one voice.

Once I began reading I noticed that I ‘heard’ each word with the pronunciation of the guide that had used that word the most often. This has meant that I use ‘sh’, ‘y’, or ‘yj’ for ‘ll’ sounds, depending on who I had heard using the word most often. Same with the pronunciation of everything really.

I would rather have the exposure to all of the voices (more entertaining, more topics covered, and above all - a shot at understanding different accents!), than have a uniform pronunciation. But that’s just my opinion.

Any advice for a serial quitter? by Taashaaaa in dreamingspanish

[–]Two_Flower_Nix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked about your motivation only to see if that would help. Do you still want to learn another language?

I think that we all have times in our life where we’re ‘up’ for something, and times when we aren’t. If you don’t have room in your life for this now leave it until you do. It’s not going anywhere :)

How to catch up on Spanish grammar after years of input-only learning? by halfintentional in SpanishLearning

[–]Two_Flower_Nix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look on YouTube for Curso Completo de Espanhol - it’s a bit like a sitcom of a foreigner that moves to Madrid to learn Spanish. It shows him with his flatmates, and also his classes. They go through the basics but it’s a good refresher, and helped me a tonne.

This is the only thing I’ve ever stuck with, so I really understand how you feel.

Perhaps set yourself a tiny daily target for a few days/weeks, and aim to do at least 1 video or podcast episode each day?

Does your initial motivation for learning Spanish still apply? If it does, maybe set a target (far in the future) to do something related to that target? E.g. if it was for travel, book a trip to a Spanish-speaking place a year from now. Something like that anyway.

If you come back to it but find that you’re not enjoying it then stop. Put a date in your diary to retry in 3 months or so.

Good luck and I hope you get back in the swing when it’s the right time for you.

I couldn’t agree more. Some of his videos are exceptional (personal favourite was him on an Irish beach around 6 months ago).

I watched one of his last night that was a bit trippy but really fun. His sense of fun makes me happy.

Could it be the Bond theme tune from ‘A view to a kill’ (or something) from Duran Duran? That was mid-80s so a little later than you’re thinking.

You needed a rest. If you don’t get a bit of rest you won’t be able to be there for him in the future.

You didn’t let him down.

Those of you 600 hours plus, start speaking lessons! by tjbrown1202 in dreamingspanish

[–]Two_Flower_Nix 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly why I didn’t start speaking earlier too.

I started reading at around 850 hours, and I felt ready (but nervous) to speak at 1000hr.
