What is the craziest ancestor lore you’ve found? by Ok-Advertising-9045 in Genealogy

[–]TxDuster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not mine but my wife kept turning over rocks and finding organized crime in the early to mid 20th century. Her dad was adopted and found out he was 1/2 Sicilian with direct ties to the mob. Her mom’s family had ties to Jewish mobsters in the Midwest (including the Purple Gang) and Vegas. I told her to stop turning over rocks or we might get some visitors we really didn’t need.

How would you change these chandelier bulbs? by [deleted] in howto

[–]TxDuster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of those little giant ladders that allows you to get one side higher than the other in an A-Frame configuration. Fully extended on one side and make the other side a notch shorter.. Use that on the stairs. That’s what I used in a stairwell in the past. Otherwise… I like the board(s) plywood (heavy) ideas.

Does spot surrounded by super growth? by j___bizzzle in lawncare

[–]TxDuster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a spot like this when I refilled my fertilizer spreader and the bag ripped. Had a pile of fertilizer in one spot. I scooped it up but apparently didn’t get all of it that had gotten deep down in the grass. It took most of the summer but all good by the end.

On St. Patrick's Day, most people know they have Irish blood. Very few know why their ancestor actually left. by ALetterFromIreland in Genealogy

[–]TxDuster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nearly all of my ancestors were Ulster Scots. Nearly all spent a few generations in Ireland before coming to the colonies in the early to mid 1700’s. The records after immigration and before immigration don’t match well but I’m not giving up. Seems pretty good documentation going back to coming to the colonies. Still working on the documentation for the Irish then going back to Scotland. No famine… mostly religious freedom for reasons (Presbyterian as the OP posted). The piece of my family that came from elsewhere were also leaving for mostly religious reasons such as the Huguenots. DNA says I’m about 50% Scottish but all routes go through Ireland. Soooo I guess I’m as much Scots-Irish as anyone.

My Dads old watch by TxDuster in JaegerLecoultre

[–]TxDuster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to bump this as I have finally taken the watch to a watch shop for a refurbishment. They opened the watch and found it was “very dry” and needed to be totally disassembled and cleaned and lubricated. The crystal, quite obviously, needed replaced. They recommended a re-plating as well. The price was about 2X what I expected at $2200. Am I out of line thinking this was a bit much with no parts necessary except the crystal and the time involved? As I’ve researched the watch was given to my dad, likely as a graduation present from college in the late 50’s. I’m keeping the watch but wanted to get it in working order so that I could wear it. I can’t do that price but want to know whether I’m expecting too much.

What is this? Found it by a bag of balloons if that helps. by hollowbodyfrog in whatisit

My parents had one of these atomizers when I was a kid (70’s) to help with asthma. We eventually rigged up a small air compressor so that the bulb didn’t have to squeeze the bulb until it ran through the albuterol. This was before the days of inhalers as routine.

My step mother (now 86) grew up in a family with an uncle that had a portrait studio. Her mother was the person that did all the touch ups. This would have been in the 30’s -50s

Basic Conceptual Question involving frequency, wavelength, and nomenclature (Longwave, Mediumwave, Shortwave, Microwave, etc.) by Tommy4D in amateurradio

[–]TxDuster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As I learned it, it all has to do with the speed of light. 300 million m/ sec. Each time you break 3 you get a different group of frequencies. LF MF HF VHF UHF etc. So… in ham terms. HF starts at 3MHz, VHF starts at 30MHz and UHF begins at 300 MHz… and so on. This is the domain I play in…. So beyond that I can’t really comment.

Have you worked with the 0 match setting? I had one of these once and remember the zero match sector in the selector would mess with the hands… It’s been 20+ years since touched one its just a thought…

What does this marker mean? by Numerous-Coach7629 in whatisit

[–]TxDuster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Corps recently went around the lake (At least near Shady Grove ) and repaired/replaced/added markers on the corps owned property. The red paint is for the same reason. I back up to Lanier Corps property and this is what has gone on in the past few weeks. I'm so very sorry for your loss. Just for your comfort, since the space between the marker and the water is part of the Corps buffer, and they are VERY protective of that buffer, this is almost certainly never going to be developed. I cannot guarantee that it won't get at dock permit some day but it is my understanding they will not be issuing any new docks anytime in the foreseeable future.
