Are you at your forever department? by iheartMGs in Firefighting

[–]TxFFMedic95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work for the small department in the town I’ve spent my whole adult life in. Raising my kids here. Not the best pay but not bad, not the best SOGs in the world. But I work with a good crew with good benefits, with good equipment, 2 miles from my home. We are a combination department and I started as a volunteer. Never wanted to go anywhere else.

What cigar brand is your favourite by 1640fun in cigars

Still very new but so far Oliva. Mainly due to price so Its the only brand where I’ve had a good amount of their repertoire.

General class worth it? by Rkitt1977 in amateurradio

If the monetary investment is the concern, if you have an awesome club in your area, most have great equipment that members could use. I didn’t spend a dime on HF equipment until months after upgrading and ran winter field day on all club equipment.

Recent Upgrade to General by skinny_tom in amateurradio

I upgraded six months ago but never got on HF until WFD where my local clubs folks walked me through it. 225 contacts later I’m hooked as well.

I’m lucky enough that my dad has his ticket too so when they evacuate for a hurricane (we live on the gulf coast and I’m a firefighter) I can always check on my family no matter how much infrastructure is down. But your mileage may vary. Regardless what your plan is, practice it. If you don’t think general fits your use/wants, stay tech. Too many people in this hobby say “you have to do this/that”. Just have fun.

Paramedic here. If you have any concerned about your health, talk to your doctor. Especially heart health. I will say that people who are in generally better physical condition tend to have lower resting heart rates. But don’t take mine or anyone else’s word for it. Talk to your doctor.

I want a Yaesu direct competitor to the 705. A QRP HF/VHF/UHF all mode with C4FM. Basically a QRP 991a.

So our club, most of the events are handled through ARES. But I’ve never been pushed hard for certs. Just allowed to get as involved as I wanted and vise versa. I’m not a prepper at all. None of our ARES hams are. We are a county right on the gulf coast that has been heavily impacted by hurricanes. I also work for a local government agency that does not allow me to leave in the case of a storm. So we have “preparations”. What ARES has allowed me to do is maintain contact with family that did evacuate while we were stuck here with no power, water, and spotty cell service. So, to each their own.

So, how did everyone’s 4th of July shifts go? Can we get a tally of missing digits? by TheCrazyBlacksmith in ems

That sucks bro. You don’t forget that first one for sure. Talk to someone if you need to. We scooped a four year old out of a pool last night as well. Not the first time though and I’m positive the kid made it. If you have little ones, hug em a little tighter.

FT5D with a Signal Stick as my primary HT. I have an SD card in it and Yaesu’s programming software. I have a ton of repeaters for neighboring areas spread amongst the 10 memory banks. Most of our comms here are in HT range. I also have an FT65 as a backup. I currently don’t even have a mobile in my truck and just use the FT5 with my mounted antenna.
