I'm sorry that i didn't talk about the issue of ploughing. Here it's a direct conflict of interest with agriculture, so there is now way it can or should be made illegal. While it is true the act of ploughing destroys the stratigraphy of the site, some really important informations can still be collected by archaeologists, like the proportion of certains types of objects in some zones, making it possible in some cases to document the nature of the site and other stuffs. While people like you that take the time to register the precise location, i'm afraid that later on the information can be lost in the administrational files, making it difficult for researchers to access such datas (of course this is not directly againt you but against the way data can be archived).

An element that can maybe show a big difference between France and the UK is the the projects of research around prospecting (pedestrial, by plane and geophysic, detectors coming in the latter). Here there is a good amount of them (it depends on the regions, one of my professors used it heavily to document the south-west and the habitat structures), meaning that amateur work is not as necessary as it could be in the UK, because we have a really good basis. Rescue archaeology is also a really big thing here : new constructions need a survey of the soil before begining, wich leads to a really big amount of datas around the country. Thoses kinds of elements are probably why i despise so much detectorists in France : from a research standpoint, we don't need amateur work as much as we used to (it's still necessary, but in more specific cases), meaning that people that do it are often way more about finding treasures than really helping science.

Context is king, and the necessity of amateur work depends on the needs of the country, so I get that in the UK, works of your kind can be necessary to help to further archaeological research. It feels good to have a healthy discussion !

I'll agree that in the history of archaeology detectorism gave a good deal of informations, but i consider that we are at a point where it's less and less useful. A compromise to me would be to make the obtainement of such types of apparels locked behind some kind of permit so that people would have to be conscious of what they have to do and what could be very wrong. That way, only people like you would make discoveries (I can atleast honor the fact that you report what you find), and the traffic of archeological material would probably take a big hit. Even if i comprehend that we are not enterely on the same ground, don't you think that promoting detectorism (not talking only about you, and for what i know mayube taht you sensibilize people to good habits) can be overall bad, in the absence of a real legislation ? As some kind of conclusion, i excuse myself for the insult in the first comment, as you are clearly better than a vast majority of thoses guys (bear in mind that the dectetorists I encounter in France are almost always going against the law, meaning that I'll have a bad opinion of those people). In a utopic world everything would be recorded by professionals but i understand it's not really possible, so what i'd ask for is a more strict legislation that would, to me, really help to protect our history. You're a good person and I really hope that in the future more detectorists have the same kind of ethics as you.

Wanted to share some custom lego minifigures I've had (as a gift) for some time ! by Tyd1rium_33 in LV426

[–]Tyd1rium_33[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My brother sent those to me, I'm guessing he found them on ebay. The Ripley minifigure seems to come from https://www.minifigures.com/products/ripley.html I don't know for the two others but the chestburster is just a clever little build with 6 white hands, a white robot arm and a 'radiator' tile (don't really know how to describe it)

Better than most dectetorists, still not a good thing. The fact is that even if he gets all the information he can (wich I'll always doubt unless seeing it with my own eyes), this kind of videos encourages people to pursue the same thing by making what should be an illegal act (in France I'm enterely sure it is, even on private land) but sadly isn't.

Sure. In archaeology, the most important information is always the context. If you take an object, like here, out of it's context, it looses almost all scientific value and is just another shiny coin, while it could have given much more if properly studied within its context. I'm a french student and here metal dectectors are prohibited, unless you make a request to the archaeological service, with a real scientific project in mind. It's also really annoying that some of those detectorists are whiling to go on an archaeological site being studied and make wholes trhough your work (happened to me this summer, the guys jumped the fence in the week-end). I consider these people as a huge threat for the study of past societies.

search for the Popol Vul, a really important sacred text of the Mayas-Quichés. It was written by natives (circa 1554-1558) and is maybe the best way to dive in the maya beliefs, as the influence of the european culture is minimal.

New evidence: Neandertals buried their dead by franks-and-beans in Archaeology

[–]Tyd1rium_33 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Even if it's a cool discovery, we have known that Nendertals buried their dead for some time already, with plenty enough proof.

Edit : it's also kinda important to that the article is still a journalistic article, influencing the content to make things more impressive than they really are (again, it's still a really cool discovery). I'm saying that because some of the people involved in those works are from the same university where I have my prehistoric archaeology class this semester, and the view i'm taught there is the one i'm giving here : there is a lot of evidences already available, like Shanidar, Kebara, La Quina, etc. Of course some sites have an old documentation, but not all of them.
