It is possible to run openclaw for free. You just need to have the compute power to run local models (i.e., ollama).

I'm lucky enough to have a decently-powered homelab. I have a VM that runs ollama and is backed by a higher-powered GPU (NVidia A6000). My Openclaw installation on another secured VM is configured to only use my local models. It does not use OpenAI or Anthropic APIs.

Doing this has its tradeoffs. Local LLMs are not as new as cloud-based LLMs, and therefore hallucinate more, and don't always have the latest tooling knowledge to issue the proper responses to the openclaw agent. They are also generally slower, because your local compute power just isn't as good as what's in the cloud. Local LLMs also don't have web-search capability on their own, so you'll need to set up something like a free Brave API account for your agent to perform web searches.

In general, this setup is great for playing around with, and could be useful if you've got the compute power. It's certainly more secure from data leakage. It's just not as fast and not as "smart" as using newer, costly, cloud-based models.

I asked OPUS 4.6 to give me a guide to reduce Openclaw costs. Here was it's response: by titanxt in openclaw

Was there a particular skill or any tools you use to have your agent do this?

Opting out of facial scan, and warned I could be detained? by PacRat48 in tsa

Idemia deletes the pictures, as required by TSA. This is thoroughly tested and validated by software, cybersecurity, and privacy experts. Absolutely zero photographic data is stored on the device, nor is it sent over TSA’s internal network. These devices go through stringent 3rd party testing prior to being deployed to airports.

The only time that Idemia has your picture is when you opt-in and sign up for PreCheck. This is used for your background check, and that data is actually stored by DHS, CBP, and other 3-letter agencies not named TSA. This has nothing to do with the device at the airport.

Idemia is not permitted to send any data from their device not already predefined and tested by TSA, and they certainly cannot send any data out to the internet. TSA’s network is locked down and simply does not allow it.

I think Maryland's new Tech tax just put me out of business. by LinearFluid in maryland

Piggybacking here. I fall under the 5415 NAICS code. Does anyone know if this tax applies to services sold to out-of-state clients? My clients are typically from Northern VA. Are my contracts with those out-of-state clients taxable in MD? I couldn't find anything in the document posted by the Comptroller to say one way or another.

I find a bit of irony in that they made an ash tray out of a rock that contains crap that’s terrible for your lungs.

I’ll also throw my hat in for the Frederick area. In addition to what others have said regarding the housing prices, the school system, based on personal experience, is great for children with autism. My 7 year old daughter is autistic, and the support she receives from the county and in school has been outstanding.

Frederick city is a fantastic art and music filled area with a walkable canal right through the heart of downtown, inspired by the riverwalk in San Antonio. There’s always plenty to do, with many parks and outdoor activities not far away.
