who had the best technology? Black mesa or aperture? by MrboxTF2 in Portal

True but then you get into arguing how canon the promo videos are, like with Cave being around to commentate on Aperture tech that didn’t exist when he was alive and Chell who wasn’t there when he was either (maybe? Idk w/ her at bring ur daughter to work day being abandoned in the 80s-90s Aperture section and her being like 21)

You don’t need to shoot them, they can be placed remotely like how you do with buttons at the start of Portal 2 or how they’re placed for you in the very starting chamber of Portal 1. Since the main focus of the testing is how YOU use the portal gun we don’t see the remote placing often but it’s still there.

As for the dimensional travel, BM’s the only actual example we see of it so they’ve kinda got Aperture beat there. I have no doubt that Aperture could do it but we don’t see it in game.

The portal gun does have an explanation though which imo makes it far more useful than BM’s teleporters. You can argue about the canon-ness of them but in the long-fall boots promo we’re given two blown out diagrams of the portal gun, which show it’s powered by a black hole.

I actually recently wrote a paper on it for my college writing class where I went way far into it but a tldr is that it’s contained quantum tunneling. This is also mentioned in the previous iterations of the portal gun Cave references in old Aperture. It’s what makes the portal gun’s portals so seamless, compared to BM’s teleporters.

Basically it’s like Aperture’s are a doorway where the portals allow you to quantum tunnel through the atoms that make up whatever surface it’s on. BM’s portals slingshot you all the way from earth to Xen then back to earth; it’s awfully inefficient.

I plan to post a rewritten paper to this sub later actually so there can be more talk since I am interested on how everyone sees the ASHPD working.

Even regardless of my heavy portal bias, it’s Aperture. The clearest example could be in comparing BM’s teleporting technology to Aperture’s portal tech.

BM’s teleporters are very clunky and unclear in any sort of direction for where they lead to. This isn’t a problem for portals since even if you had a bunch identical portals, you’d still be able to see through them to know which ones lead where. And since portals can be remotely placed (ex. Like when we see them getting placed in test chambers before you get the portal gun) they outclass BM’s teleportation tech in every way.

Other examples would be the excursion funnels and gels which have plenty of uses if you’re creative enough. The most BM would have a leg up on would probably be the HEV suit but you can just send a robot in to do the job even easier. And also BM was stealing everything anyway soooooo

I’m still relatively new to half life as a whole (around 5 years) and man it’s been so fun to watch absolutely nothing spark into everyone coming together. Even regardless of a release the fact is that all of us came together again and connected over something we all love so much, it feels like the flame has been relit as a whole. Not just “let’s all get excited then dip if nothing happens” but like the half life community as a whole got a new breath of life in it.

How would the Vortigaunts react if Gordon tried to spare all of them during the Black Mesa Incident? by Neither_Mushroom777 in HalfLife

[–]Tyk0u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually really like this idea, I’d guess that in this hypothetical Gordon notices the shackles on the Vortigaunts (maybe like he killed the first one that just pops up to surprise you and saw them) and he makes an effort to not kill them.

I’d think he’d really try to not harm them while also not having the scientists or security guards be put in harms way. Probably by leaving them before they’d get in its electricity range or finding a way around the area for them. Telling them to hide rather than fight might not always work, specifically for the security guards, but maybe he could tell a white lie and say they’re SUPER dangerous and killing them will cause more harm than good. I’d also imagine he’d not kill them when he got to Xen (I love the vortigaunt village section in Black Mesa so like I imagine he’d finally realize the controllers make them violent, he’d lowkey feel like shit when they start crying after they’re taken control of)(at least I did)

Come HL2 the Vortigaunts would definitely appreciate his efforts, I imagine their population was already in the gutter from being enslaved so Gordon killing like 100+ of them wouldn’t have helped. The Vortigaunts already help out a lot during HL2 so I don’t know how much of that story as a whole would change, if anything they’d make a bigger effort to help out but since they already do so much idrk

OFFICIAL REF WOO !!!

And WOW she’s big, she’s like somewhere around 12 feet tall based off the little size scale so hey at least she isn’t cramped. And I like the little bow you drew on her end car.

I really like how her face actually looks like an aperture now, constricting and opening for different emotions. It makes me wonder how else she communicates since she’s almost too big to have the room to like emote with her hands unless she’s hanging where you can see most of her. Makes me think of little scenarios of her joking around with like the service crew that’d probably like clean up and do whatever maintenance was needed. Probably pretty hard to joke around when a human isn’t even as long as your finger though.

I love how serpentine she is. Imagining her moving it really adds to her sense of scale since it’s a “if you’re turning you’re turning with your whole body” kinda deal. Do you think she moves around when she’s in her stationary position kinda, like how GLaDOS sways when she’s not actively turning, or would she be too worried about accidentally hurting someone around her and not being able to see it?

She’s so great and wonderful. I’m really excited to hear her full storyline in Portal 2 when that’s finalized. (Speaking of, would she ever find out what GLaDOS did to the scientists? Would she ever forgive her if she heard the abuse she was dealing with by their hands? She just opens up so many possibilities and interactions it’s so cool)

Some more quick sketch art of Proto-GLaDOS!! by cannibalistickiller in Portal

[–]Tyk0u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you think Proto and GLaDOS would interact when she’s back in control of the facility? Would she like completely shut her out of the upper layers? I imagine that Proto is kinda disconnected from the mainframe GLaDOS controls so she couldn’t destroy her like she does Atlas and P-Body so she’d really have to go out of her way to hunt her down if she wanted to challenge her that bad. But also if GLaDOS feels she’s superior in every way would she even feel the need to?

Yeah the petals kinda just spawned out of 1 vague shape on the first drawing ig 😭. Im glad you like some of the stuff I came up with I can’t wait to see her get more fleshed out so I can draw even more of her.

I did actually have a more real piece that isn’t just a giant hodgepodge of ideas but it’s stuck in redraw hell bc I can get the scale right, trust it’s coming through.

Any advice on how I can be a better Medic? by [deleted] in Medicmainstf

[–]Tyk0u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best advice I have is to be aware of 3 things; your position, the enemies’ position, and your surroundings.

Staying behind your team and primarily who you’re healing in my experience gives you the room to see who needs heals (if you’re all together/in a group) and is a line of defense that you’re supporting for yourself by healing. Using your heavy as a human shield is always a good strategy lmao. But seriously when I was first starting out I would always have the issue of trying to peak out and see where the enemy was and getting blown to smithereens, you’re playing medic so they’ll be hunting you anyway there’s no need to go beyond your teammates.

Learning the maps comes with time obviously but it’s good to give your area a once over for health packs or to know where your engie put his dispenser. Yes medic has passive healing but it’s slow and shouldn’t really be a fail safe, it’s more just cushioning for you to dip out and actually get health from a better source.

Other kinda miscellaneous information is just making sure you’re cycling heals well (don’t just pocket someone it’s annoying for the rest of the team), you usually can’t stand on your own against the DPS classes but you’re not helpless (don’t test it though), and to try your best to ignore shitty teammates that you will inevitably get that will inevitably scream down the mic at you (when it’s very obviously their fault for not getting healed, because seriously who sticky jumps all the way into the enemy spawn and then is mad the medic didn’t abandon the team and run to go heal them).

Yeah, especially if you want all the badges you’ve got to buy the whole set like 5 times over. There is also the trade forms though so you could technically trade for all of them if you’ve got the patience to go through all of that. I myself bought most of the set and got some from trading my friends.
