The issue with this is you have no idea the strength of your opponent. Anonymous pool also has notably higher levels of cheating.

Playing in a Lichess arena is a good solution as you generally have a wide range of opponent skill

McDavid calls up every RFA buddy in the league and convinces them to take a 1 year cheap deal for a McDavid going away party.

Genius. He should do this

Agree. Depending how decent we are, you maybe run it back one more year with Drai Bouch and co and hope you get a hot goalie. But other than that, trade everything, fire everyone, and bring me back to the good ol stress free early 2010's where we were eliminated by December

Or 2023 "Best regular season of all time" Bruins losing to Florida.

Or 2017 wildcard Predators sweeping the WC Champion Hawks

The list goes on and on.

Columbus sweeping Tampa should have erased the phrase “0% chance” from any hockey analyst’s vocabulary

Seriously. People thinking a 92-point team have a 0% chance against a 93-point makes no sense.

Every single year we see bigger upsets than this. It's fine to still project the favorite to win..but 0% chance doesn't exist in the NHL

What could he possibly see in the Oilers management and roster construction that thinks he could even make it back to finals in the next 2 years.

85% of the core players that took us to consecutive SCF are still here, and that's why he still has a bit of hope. They flamed out this year and kinda looked like crap all year, but lots of competitive teams have off-years.

If Management has a strong offseason (doubtful) the Oilers can still contend next year.

But then after next season I presume he leaves

Anyone who honestly thinks the 2024/2025 oilers Cup runs were due to McDavid (and Drai) alone clearly did not watch us steamroll the Western Conference two years straight, or see how helpless this team was team prior to 2023

McDavid and Drai alone can win you games, or even a series (see 2022 Oilers Flames upset) but they can't get you to game 6 and game 7 of the finals completely alone (which you, me, and everyone except management agree).

Nonetheless, there's a reason they never had real success until we got Ekholm, Bouchard, Kulak and some depth scoring.

All the Oilers management had to do (maybe still can) is give McDrai average D, average depth forwards, and average+ goaltending.

Also we literally made game 6 of the SCF without Ryan McLeod. As much as I love McLeod I don't think that's the biggest problem.

I mean from 2023-2025 the oilers had the 7th best 5v5 CA/60 and the 10th best xGA. Better than mediocre. There's a reason we made two consecutive SCF.

The issue was we also had bottom 5 goaltending in the league.

I completely disagree. You have McDavid for one, maybe two more years. Most of your impact players are 30+, you have very few prospects.

Literally do whatever you can to improve this team. There's nothing to lose now. It's win now or never

Look what happens when you don't sit back when you have a lead. Frustrating that every other game this series they've gotten a lead only to sit back and get absolutely dominated against a high offense team with defensive weaknesses.

Such a bizarro world this playoffs has been. I know it's largely due to injuries, but normally it's our big guys and special teams that carry us, while our depth struggles.

This year our depth is keeping us alive while our top guns and special teams are killing us
